JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team
Kozova Birth Indices Now Online

Willie46@...
Jewish Records Indexing - Poland is proud to announce the addition of over
1,500 Kozova birth indices for 1877-1893 to the database. These records represent the complete Kozova holdings of the AGAD Archives. If you have ancestors in the Tarnopol/Brzezany area, you may also want to search the Kozova indices. I found an ancestor and his wife, who I knew had five children in Tarnopol, had actually given birth to their first child in Kozova. With this addition, there are now over 14,000 AGAD Tarnopol Area Birth indices on the JRI-Poland database. These indices are the result of JRI-Poland's agreement with the Polish State Archives to index all the 19th Century vital records for 82 towns in the former Eastern Galicia area (currently located in Ukraine) that are held by the AGAD Archives in Warsaw. To search the database, go to <http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/jriplweb.htm> and enter your surname of interest. To narrow your search to the towns in East Galicia (current Ukraine), enter Province = "Ukraine." To narrow your search to only Kozova, enter Town = "Kozova." In my announcement of October 24, I provided detailed instructions to search the database and order records of interest >from the AGAD Archives. You can find these instructions by using the JewishGen SIG Lists Archives, which can be accessed at <http://www.jewishgen.org/wconnect/wc.isa?jg~jgsys~sigspop>. Search for "Tarnopol" and you will find my October 24 posting. I wish all Kozova researchers great success in their search of the database. If you do find success, I would appreciate if you would post your experiences on this forum. I would like to thank Jay Hackin (Kozova Town Leader), Stanley Diamond, Steve Zedeck, Michael Tobias, and the AGAD Archive staff for the success in making these Kozova indices available to all of us. U.S. Patent Holder
#general
Sherribob <sherribob@...>
good evening 'Genners,
Some weeks ago, while doing a web search for my highly unusual maiden name, I came upon someone who had received a U.S. patent in 1972. However, when I tried to enter the web site for more info I could not get in. I looked for it again today, and that web site appears to have disappeared. Would anyone know if there is any way to get more information on a patent if one only knows the person's name and the year the patent was taken out? Thanks for any info, Sherri Bobish

Hebrew word and Leib is the Yiddish word. They were used together as a name quite often, as were the names Menachem and Mendel. You're quite correct, Louise, Levi is spelled with a vav, not a vet; therefore, it is not related. However, Laiv in Hebrew means "heart" and in Yiddish it means "lion." Joel Louise Goldstein wrote:

JGeners,
I have posted on ViewMate the name of town listed as the last place of residence for my GF on a Hamburg passenger list in 1913. I assume it is written in German. 10 years later the remaining members of the family left from Ekaterinopol (Katerinopol), Ukraine in the Kiev gubernia, so I assumehe probably left >from the same area. Re: Jewish Sportsman murdered by Nazis
#general
Tilford Bartman <bartmant@...>
Hello,
I have a copy of a historical document sent to me >from Poland which lists "Jewish sportsman who were killed in the 11th action in the Bialystok Ghetto". Many were Maccabi athletes. One of those listed is Luba Subotnik. I have found that she is the grand daughter of Rabbi Avraham Akiva Subotnik. He was Rabbi in Zabludow Poland >from 1904-24. Her first cousin Mina is one of my principal contacts regarding my research into Zabludow, and also the former best childhood friend of my 2ond cousin in Zabludow Hana Lopata who was murdered somewhre unknown in the holocaust. Mina lives on Kibbutz Ma'abarrot. Her mother was Rabbi Subotniks daughter. I have given her a copy of this document. She tells me that Luba Subotnik's father was murdered in June of 1941 in the Bialystok Great Synagogue fire, which I know was set by the German Military Police Battalion 309 under the command of Major Weis on June 27th 1941. I am pretty familiar with the history of the Bialystok Ghetto and the many German "actions" there. Sometimes they go by different names. Does anyone know what the "11th Action" refers to? I don't have this brief one page document translated >from Polish yet, but the Jewish names are not hard to figure out. Best Regards to Everyone, Tilford Bartman
