JewishGen has an InfoFile on landsmanschaftn
<http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/landshaf.txt > but it is quite
out of date and incomplete. When a chairperson of a group dies,
there is quite frequently no replacement and the group becomes
inactive. It would be difficult trying to keep such a database
updated. Yad Vashem maintains a list of landsmanschaftn in Israel
with the last known contact person.

Jennifer, we have a Pikholz-Gruberg marriage. They lived in
Kaczanowka (near Skalat) and had kids around 1880.

Hi everyone. I was wondering if anyone could help me translate the
following surnames--TRACHTENBERG and GRUBERG. I imagine they both mean
mountain of something or other.

Any insight would be great.

Thanks!

Tiferes Israel Anshei Zhitomer #ukraine

Barbara <maybug@...>

I am posting this thank you to Joan Rosen for her informative note
publicly. As she so rightly indicates, belonging to that congregation may
not indicate that someone came >from that town. Indeed, I have my gf's
naturalization papers indicating he was born in Scalat, Austria, now
Ukraine (which also may only be an approximation of where he was born) and
lived in Terespol long enough to have three children.

My point in making this inquiry is to find out where the ARCHIVES of that
synagogue are located in hopes that it may yield other information. I
would be grateful to anyone else with information about this synagogue.

"In response to Barbara Harris' posting about her relative's burial in the
plot belonging to Tferes Israel Anshei Zhitomer...

Yes, it was a congregation in Phila. at the end of the 19th and at least at
the beginning of the 20th century. My great-grandfather belonged to that
congregation and thus for a while we thought he came >from Zhitomer, but as
it turned out, he emigrated >from Novograd Volinsk, a smaller town not far
from Zhitomer. There apparently was no group >from N.V. large enough to form a congregation here, so he became part of a group >from place geographically close to his home town. This, I believe, was a common practice.

Speakers #general

Arline and Sidney Sachs

Sallyann Sack and I do a twice monthly TV show entitled "Tracing Your
Family Roots". The show is sponsored by JGSGW (Jewish Genealogy Society
of Greater Washington).

Our original idea in doing the show was to have tapes available for
societies who could not afford to have speakers come to them, and for
individuals living to far to attend regular JGS meetings.

The shows are shown on the Fairfax County (Virginia) access cable network.
Anyone interested in getting the entire set of shows to use at your cable
station should contact your local station to see how this can be arranged.

JGSGW put together the first 6 shows that we did and offered them for sale.
These included:
1. Why Jewish Genealogy is different
2. Interviewing - a general overview - with oral historian Ellen Epstein
3. Interviewing - continued with a sample interview of Hans Hirsch by Ellen
Epstein
4. Beinners resources - an overview of books, manuals etc.
5. How to save the data you gathered - manual methods
6. How to save your data - a look at various computer programs with Mr.
Nixon of Hearthstone Book Store.

The intent was to package them in groups of 6 (about all that fit
comfortably on a standard video tape). There did not seem to be a great
demand for the tapes and JGSGW did not go ahead and create further
packages. Perhaps there was not enough advertising about them or perhaps
there is a greater need now.

You can see a short description of all of the over 50 shows that we have
done so far at: tracingroots.nova.org
The web site has a link to JGSGW and to the web-sites of many of our
guests, and you can send us a message through the web pages as well.

Dear JewishGen Community,

I rencently became aware of a genealogy website dealing with Boston, Mass.

The URL is: <www.bostonfamilyhistory.com>

There are many links to resources for Boston and and State of
Massachusetts, as well as ethnic, and neighborhood links. The site
is quite comprehensive and informative.

GONSKY - Yedinitz, Bessarabia #general

allan schneider <amj518@...>

Does anyone know of the Gonsky family originally >from Yedinitz (Edinits,
now Yedintsy)) Bessarabia (now Moldova)and immigrated to New York in late
1890's. They ran Russian-Turkish Baths on the lower East Side of NY
(corner Essex St and Delancey St, near Williamsburg Bridge) until about
1910 and later in Brooklyn (Flushing Ave Baths, briefly in Queens; then
for longer period Christopher Avenue Baths in Brownsville) until about
1933.

My maternal grandfather Joseph Gonsky immigrated as a boy of about 10,
with his brother Philip and father Zalman Gonsky to New York in late
1890's. Zalman Gonsky's wife was Eva Grossman who later immigrated to NY
from Bessarabia with her daughter Selma Gonsky, Josephs sister.
If anyone knows of the Gonsky family (or Grossman Family) >from Yedinitz
Bessarabia and later of the Baths run by the Joe Gonsky on lower East Side
of NY and the Christopher Ave Baths in Brownsville, Brooklyn, I would
appreciate any information you may recall or have.
