TYA:
I am attempting to find information on my grandmothers family and the area's
which they lived, they are the SCHECTMAN family (SCHECKHTMAN, SHEKHTMAN,
SHECHTMAN, SHECKMAN) and changed their name to RICH when they came to North
America. The family is >from the UKRAINE (then Russia) >from Sarnovitchi
(Sarnovichi, Korostensky Raion, Zhitomir Oblast), >from Ksaverov (Ksaveriv,
Malinsky Raion,Zhitomir Oblast) and >from Malin (Malyn, Malinsky Raion,
Zhitomir Oblast). Any information about either the family or towns would be
appreciated as I have little information before they came to North America
(I have the map co-ordinates of each area, I am looking for any other type
of information). If any one has Istoreiya Mist i Sil Ukrainskoi RSR copies
of the write ups of the aforementioned towns would be appreciated,
especially if they are translated.

and Chopovichi (Volhynia Gubernia and Zhitomirskaya Oblast); the LASKOWITZ
(changed name to LASKO or LASCOE) family >from Poland: towns of Wysokie
Mazowieckie in Lomza Gubernia and also Bialystock vicinity). Settled in
Chicago but have spread (those located) throughout the USA, Canada, Israel
and Australia.

Dear Mark,

Based upon my own experience in a similar situation, I tried to contact as
many as I could and sent them a family goup sheet showing relationships. One
evne sent me a nasty letter, not remembering who I was but when I sent her my
own family group sheet, she recognized my father and became a little closer
and now looks forward to my Newsletter. I also sent her a copy of her husband
grave stone when I visited the cemeteery where some of the family are buried.
Keep trying. I have one cousin who hates his relatives and will not reply,
because he married an Italian girl and some of the older relations id not
approve. So goes it.

Keep trying, and sometimes they get on board, but none of them seem to have
any information, and some of them do.

"Krovel'shchik" = a worker who does roofing, be it Roofing iron, slate

Remember one crucial thing, this is a hobby. This is *your* hobby. Just as

be interested in yours. Not everyone wants to know about family. Granted,
it's hard for us to understand that, but it might be just as hard for others
to understand why in the world we spend out time doing this. Always put
yourself in their position before judging them or their responses.

I have adopted a question anytime I want to "announce" a new find to
members of my family; "did you start researching for yourself or to
announce things to others?" My feeling is if other family members were
interested, they would have begun their own research. As a result, when
someone in your family responds negatively, remember this is something
you want to learn. If they wanted to, it's up to them to persue it.

One last thing, don't "push" your interests on others. Let them know you
have new information via letter, e-mail, i.e. communication but don't
"force it on them." Close the communication with, "if you are interested in
more information and specifics, please contact me and I will be happy to
share it with you." Leave it up to them to decide and request the info.

In her message of 11-24-00 Maria Krane asked what "Krovelschik" means in
Russian. I checked my big Oxford Russian-English Dictionary and I think
it means "roof maker." So I've not only learned a new Russian word but a
Russian word which is not related to the Revolution, its newspapers and
periodicals, and its various factions!
