Donn/Buchman/Kushner #lithuania

David Donn <ddonn@...>

I am writing >from Seaside, OR in the United States.

I will repost along with this the elements that I have uncovered to date.

I have very little information at this time. I am a second generation
Jewish-American. My father is attempting to provide what fragments he can.
However, He is suffering some memory loss >from a stroke a few years ago and
is about to turn 70 years.

So this is what I do know about my Donn/Buchman family to date.

My father is Albert Irwin Donn born 12/15/1930. His father was Meyer Israel Donn born March 10, 1898 in Kovno died July 13, 1973 in E. Hartford
Connecticut. He emigrated to the US via New York abt. 1905. Meyer married
Celia Buchman born April 10. 1905 in Gomel, Belarus. She emigrated to the
US via New York abt 1905 in the company of her father Aaron Buchman born
November 2, 1883 in Siberia (city unknown) Died September 1971 in W.
Hartford Connecticut. His wife was Anna (maiden name unkown) she died abt.
1925 in the United States.

I know very little about my Kushner roots at this time. I have been told
that my gf was born in/around Austria. His name was Morice David Kushner
and he died and was interned in Rhode Island. I don't know that names of
his parents or siblings. I do know that there were a number of prominent
"Kushner's" in the family (ie. Doctors, Lawyers etc.)

He served a executive officer for an east coast company (possibly regional
president for the Mills Novelty Co. abt. 1930's till his death abt. 1945).
I have no other information re. city of birth or place/date of emigration.
He was married to Gladys (maiden name unknown).

Any assistance is most appreciated. I am hoping to reconstruct family
history for the benefit of children and grandchildren and well as for my
father and myself.

I am on JGFF. I have searched the Hamburg site to no avail. and searches of surnmaes online have produced no result to date. I have been struggling
with much of this for a couple of years now.

I have searched the Social Security Death Index and gleaned some minimal
help. And yes I am preparing to contact the Social Security Office in an
effort to obtain a copy of my mothers original application to assertain my
maternal gm's maiden name.

I know that the Kushner's I am seeking are buried in Cranston (Jewish
Cemetery) but I don't know which one ... Haven't been there since I was much younger.

And the Donn branch of the family is buried in Hartford, CT at the Waliska
(sp) Society Cemetary. I am requesting help with that research as well.

Thanks for all the help...

Copyright permissions #lithuania

Ada Greenblatt <ada.Greenblatt@...>

I am in final throes of completing a very extensive JewishGen ShtetLinks
page for my ancestral shtetl of Seta/Shat, Lithuania.

This page can currently be viewed on my home page at:

<http://home.att.net/~ada.greenblatt/>

It is not yet ready to be uploaded to the JewishGen server because I am
still in the process of getting the necessary copyright permissions for the
English translations of articles on Seta/Shat that were originally
published in Yiddish or Hebrew texts (these articles will not be put on my
website unless and until I get that permission). In that regard, can
someone please tell me who to contact for the following:

A. Berl Kagan's "Jewish Cities, Towns, and Villages in Lithuania until
1918: Historical-Biographical Sketches" which was self-published by the
author in 1991 in Brooklyn, NY. Berl Kagan is deceased. Who can grant me
the permission? Hope I don't have to do an heir search. <vbg>

B. "Lite, Volume 1", which was edited by Mendel Sudarsky, U.
Katzenelenbogen, and J. Kissin. Published in NY in 1951 by the
Jewish-Lithuanian Cultural Society. The copyright ran out in 1998 (47
years after publication), unless it was renewed. The Jewish-Lithuanian
Cultural Society existed only until 1965, so I have a feeling that the
copyright for "Lite, Volume 1" was NOT renewed. Does anyone know for sure?
Would someone in Washington, DC be willing to check this out for me at the
Library of Congress in exchange for a comparable amount of genealogical
research that I can do in a New York City archive, library or cemetery?

C. "Encyclopedia Lituanica", which is in English, was published in 1970 in
Boston, MA by Juozas Kapocius, presumably another case of self-publishing.
Can someone in Boston please give me the address of whom to contact? If it
is not listed, any other suggestions?

Brandler Institute of Chasidic Thought <bict@...>

R. Yacov Shimshon of Shepetovka is buried in the old cemetery in Tiberias -
it is right off the main road approaching the city. The grave is in the
older section of the cemetery near the grave of Reb Mendel of Vitebsk,
though I have visited the cemetery dozens of times (my Father of blessed
memory is buried nearby) unfortunately I have not taken a photo of this
grave.

Help - I don't know where to start! #ukraine

Rhoda <Rhoda.Broider@...>

My 80 year old father has asked me to try and trace our family history
and hopefully any living relatives. I have very little info - only that

my Grandfather was born in Odessa approx 1845, was in Russian army,
posted to Belgium in 1915 and then came to UK in same year where he met
and married my grandmother in London approx 1919/20/21. Only thing I
could think of was to send off for his marriage certificate but where do

I go next? Would be grateful for any help.

Jonathan Eisenberg <JEISENBERG@...>

Write, then call. Send something of interest/value to them (partial family
tree, etc.) Some people will not write back just because it takes too much
time or trouble. Some will not call for the same reason, or because they
feel they do not have accurate or complete information (full names, exact
dates, etc.) and will disappoint you. Many will not call just because they
do not want to pay the LD phone bill, especially older people who still see
long distance calls as a huge luxury. Call them and put it on your own
dime. Most people will talk to you if they know it is for real and not some
solicitation. Good luck.

Re: Jewish bootleggers #general

Stephen Mednick <smednick@...>

Is there some good information about the presence of Jews as bootleggers
during Prohibition? Not stuff about Bugsy Siegel, or any of the famous
Jewish gangsters, but the rest of them?
I've just finished reading a book called "Tough Jews" written by a Rich Cohen
and first published in 1998 (ISBN 0 09 975791 5). It describes the Jewish
Gangsters in New York >from the early '20s through to the early '40s. The book
refers to a lot of Jewish gangsters/criminals etc and the index contains a lot
of names and there's also a very good bibliography that refers to other
publications.

from reading the book most of the people mentioned certainly weren't saints
and they were some of the most violent criminals of the time. I suspect any
later generations to the people mentioned would probably not be aware of what
really went and if they do would be extremely reluctant to talk about their
ancestors.

Origin of First name:Mentain, in E Prussia #general

An elderly colleague of mine has an ancestor Mentain/Mantayn endelsohn
who lived in Schneidermuhl in E Prussia.

Q1. I have searched the archives and find no mention of the first name
Mentain. Can anybody provide any information about it. pls?
Q2. StetlSeeker does not have a Schneidermuhl listed although there are 3
references to this site, one of them suggesting it is now in Poznan
province. Stetlseeker now offers "Chendremal" as a town in Romania, 360Km
NW of Bucharest. Is this the former Schneidermuhl?

Vernon Kronenberg vkronenb@pcug.org.au
Dear Vernon et al.

Schneidemuhl is today Pila, North of Poznan (Possen) and west of Bidgoszcz
(Bromberg). Today it's in Poland but it used to be in Prussia.
My Arenheim family came >from there. My grandfather's foreign name was
Martin.
Your Mentein hears like it could be the same name. Also Mendelson is more
likely than Endelson, although there is also Hendelson.

Regards. Udi Cain.
