Re: Given name "Tanchen" #general

Does anyone know the given name "Tanchen", also
written "Tanchel" and "Tanchem"? This person was born
in Latvia circa 1852. I'm guessing that it is a
nickname for "Natan," but I don't know for sure.
Dara Pearlman
To me, all of the above look like Yiddishized versions of the name Tanhum
(the "h" requires an underdot as it represents the letter het).

This name seems to have been quite common in medieval and early modern
times (several Tanhums are listed in the Enyclopaedia Judaica). The name
Tanhum actually goes back to the Talmud (where we find also the form
Tanhuma, and comes >from the verb root n-h-m, meaning to comfort or console)
-- like the name of the biblical prophet Nahum (Nachum or Nochum in
Yiddish). Related names are Nahman (Nachman in Yiddish) and the female
version of the name, Nehama.

There is a book entitled "Rabbis in Uniform - The Story of the American
Jewish Military Chaplain" edited by Chaplain Louis Barish (United States
Army), published by Jonathan David Publishers, copyright 1962 by the
Association of Jewish Chaplains.

The book gives a brief history of Jewish chaplains in the US military and
short stories of many of the chaplain's individual experiences as related
by themselves.

Good luck in your research.

Although both Rabbi Irving Tepper (as noted by Burt Schreiber) and Rabbi

neither have stories incorporated in the text of the book.

Re: BENNANI #general

Is anyone familiar with the surname BENNANI, probably originally from
Morocco?
Sita Likuski
Is it possible that a typo has crept in here? I once knew a BEN-AMI
family >from Morocco. BEN-AMI (or BEN-AMMI) means "son of my people"
(see Genesis 19:38) -- whereas "Bennani" has no plausible translation
that springs to mind.

I am searching for any information on a family of two
brothers, Harry and Shloime and two sisters, Reyzl and
name unknown. Their last name was KALIN or KALINSKI of
Kaminsk or Kamienski Poland and the name was changed
to SCHWARTZ in America.
Harry went to Detroit and changed his name to
SCHWARTZ. Shloime or Samuel,a tailor, came to Quebec
in 1920, then to Detroit, then to Toronto, Canada. He
married Guta LEWINSKI of Krasne or Krasnopol, Poland.
Reyzl ended up in Israel, her last name (married) was
CHOINSKI or something similar.
It is the descendant of Shloime (Samuel) in Toronto
who is looking for information. Shloime also changed
his name to SCHWARTZ. He was born in 1899 in Kamiensk
or Kaminsk.

Thanks for any help or any information.
