Cuba: Centro Sefardi (Jose Levy Tur) #general

Daniel Kazez <dkazez@...>

I am trying to contact Jose Levy Tur, the president of the
Centro Sefardi in Havana, Cuba. I do have the telephone
number. But I would like to send him e-mail
or a fax. Does anyone know if Centro Sefardi (or Jose Levy
Tur) has an e-mail address or fax number?

Dan

P.S. I am trying to get information on my cousin, Yakob
Alhadef, who died in Cuba around 1950. (He was born in
Istanbul, Turkey, in around 1884.)

Glusock and Sulphur mining #general

Alexander Skolnick <askolnic@...>

I recently found that my great-grandmother, Golda Glusock (with 2 kids)
came to US in 1912 and the ship manifest listed that they came >from Dvinsk
(currently named Daugavpils, Latvia). Her husband (Israel) had died young
(prior to 1912) and one story was that he was a sulphur miner.

Was sulphur mining done in this area?

Has anyone ever heard of people with this unusual last name? It seems that
there is no clear correct spelling. In my research I've encountered the

names: Glusok, Gluschok, and Glusack.

any info would be appreciated.

The name ALKUNEH #general

BABYCAT3 <babycat3@...>

Last night I came in on the end of a yiddish movie being shown on my local
PBS station. When the credits were run at the end one of the actors was
listed as ALKUNEH. There is no way to tell whether that was the first or
last name. Has anyone ever come across this name? I would love to find
out if this is a given or surname and its origin.
Thank you and a Happy Chanukah

Tuberculosis and Death Certificates #general

MMBegun@...

Hi -- are you certain they died in Penna? Perhaps they were in T.B.
hospitals in other nearby states. This is what I discovered in the case
of a relative who died >from T.B. If they were ill, they usually were not
at home, but confined to a sanatorium.

Pennsylvania, as you know, borders N.Y. on the North and N.J. on the east.
You might want to research T.B. hospitals near the towns the relatives
lived in, which might be just over the state border.

At one time there was a massive T.B. facility on Staten Island, N.Y., which
today is known as Seaview Hospital and Home. All the vacant buildings
stand deteriorating and ghostly -- quite a sight. Check that one out,
since their patients came >from far & wide. Hope this helps, Mila Begun in

Zipora I get, but Koona? Maybe I'm not pronouncing it right. I always

The name might be "Kuna," as listed in Rabbi Gorr's book on Jewish personal
names. Origin is supposedly Old Spanish, meaning a cradle, or childish or
infantile. Other spellings listed are Kune, Kunya, Kunye. According to
Gorr, the family name Kunin is derived >from Kune.

A good friend of mine in H.S. & college was named Cuna, pronounced "Kyuna,"
the Americanization of the name. Regards, Mila Begun in NYC

Given Name " Greeka" #general

Does anyone know the name Greeka or Greka (the spelling is mine).
My great uncle left a tape recording of family stories and this was the
name of one of my great aunts. This is the only information I have about
her name. She was born a Schulman, near Minsk about 1870.
Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Purveyors to the Tsar #general

IRSWED <irswed@...>

I have an 88yr. old relative that related the following story. His great
grandfather, (my great-great grandfather), MENDEL, saved the CZAR in the
25 Crimean War. He was given land near MARTINYA as a reward. This land
served as the dowry for his daughter SARAH who married DOV BER (BERYL)
ROMISCH.
Is there anyway to find documents to support this or further names? I am
having difficulty tracing ROMISH.
