Re: the name Minka?? #general

Tom Venetianer <tom.vene@...>

Minka is the Hungarian pet name for Armin. 'ka' is a typical suffix
for Hungarian pet names, like for example Tomika (my Hungarian pet
name). But it could be the pet name for Hermin(a) too.

From: Judith Romney Wegner <jrw@Brown.edu>
I found the name Minka in some papers. I believe it to be a sister to my
great-grandfather. I am assuming its a Yiddish name. Would anyone know
what its equivalent would be in Hebrew??
David Fielker
Minnie, Minna and Mindel were usually given to "match" the Hebrew name
Miriam. So I would expect the same to be true of Minka.

Balsachere Forest in Lithuania?? #general

Howard Zakai

Thank you Genners for responding to my question regarding Minka. It seemed
like it could be a nickname for Minnie. She is almost definitely a sister
to my great-grandfather Jacob Abrams.

Jacob had a diary of his boyhood >from Lithuania. He doesn't know where he
was born - it burned down a few times and then they moved. He mentions
Zvinck, and then eventually living in Shelel, which I believe is modern
day Silale (his brother's WWI draft card says Salol) Reading the book
last night, Jacob named playing in a nearby Balsachere Forest. Would this
sound familar to anyone by any chance??? Is it actually by Silale?

TIA.. Happy Chanukah

Brethren of the Ancient Order of Maccabeans #general

Can the group help, please ?
I am researching the KAPATOVSKY family, one of whose members, Samuel
KAPATOVSKY (Hebrew name Shmuel Baruch, also known as Sam Kay), died in
Manchester in 1919.

Part of the inscription on his grave reads:
"also mourned by the Brethren of the Ancient Order of Maccabeans, Mount
Horeb Beacon No 9".

My questions:
Where can I find information about this organisation ?
If they kept records, where are they ?
What was special about Mount Horeb Beacon No.9 ?
Does anyone have any knowledge about Sam ?

With thanks for any information, howver general.

Mt.Vernon, NY - Butcher Shop #general

My father, Abraham CLARE worked as a kosher butcher in Mt. Vernon until
his death in 1950. His employer first was Abe RABY and then Willie TARTACK.
Does anyone have any information about the location of the shop or
descendents of RABY or TARTACK?

Re: Cemetery Records #austria-czech

Dennis Gries <dgries@...>

The following posting was made yesterday:
From: Njturtle55@aol.com
I need a cemetery look up for the following three people. Burials could
have taken place in Maryland, Delaware, Penna. New Jersey or New York,
I think.

Sara Buchholtz, born about 1843, came to the USA in 1890, death unknown.
David Bernstein, born about 1889, came to the USA in 1890, death unknown.
Abraham Mandelkern, born Nov. 3, 1896, in Phila. Penna., death unknown.
I have done many lookups for many people who have posted on this board
(and have often gone back to the poster for clairfying and expanding
information). So, I will take this opportunity to comment that for any
of us to try to help the poster, there must be much more information.
The poster fails to indicate where the persons were last observed in a
census, city directory, marriage record, or any other means.

Presumably, there are immigration records of the first two. At what port?
New York, Philadelphia, etc. For Abraham, there should have been a census
record.

Also, judging by the poster's choice of email name, I believe he lives in
New Jersey. Well, the archives and resources of all 5 states are within a
few hours drive. Sorry if this appears like a "flame" but there is no
substitute for personal effort including use of FYI resources on this site,
Rootsweb, and other sites. We have traveled to Ontario, New York, Delaware,
Maryland, and DC as part of our quest.

Stephen, and any others, I will help you on specific lookups in the
Phila/Montg/Bucks Counties of PA.

My Great Great Grandmother went >from Germany to South Africa when still a
baby in the 1830's. Her natural father's surname (who died in Germany) was
Heilbronn. Her mother's maiden name was Nussbaum. Her stepfather's surname
was Solomon. The surnames used to refer to my Great Great Grandmother in
various documents are variously: Heilbron(n), Bronen, (M)Nussbaum, Lisbon
and her daughter said that she was known as Miss Solomon until she married.
The versions of her first name are Marion, Marian,Meintje and Minka. I
assume that some of these are common alternatives to Minka. She has not
been an easy lady to research!

Family Finder #general

Florence & Henry Wellisch <kelwel@...>

I just came across the first newsletter of the JGS of Toronto, dated May
1985. There is the following entry:

Computerized Family Finder which is a list of ancestral surnames and towns
being researched by over 450 members of other JGS groups in the United
States and Canada.
Address: Dara Universal, 1485 Teaneck Road, Teaneck, NJ 07666.

I think there are now a few more listed.

Henry Wellisch
Toronto

MODERATOR NOTE: Thank you Henry. Here is what the JGFF home page says.
"The JewishGen Family Finder (JGFF) is a compilation of surnames and towns
currently being researched by over 40,000 Jewish genealogists worldwide.
It contains over 200,000 entries: 60,000 ancestral surnames and 15,000
town names, and is indexed and cross-referenced by both surname and town
name. The JGFF was created in 1982 by Gary Mokotoff, and is now
maintained by JewishGen, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation."
My, how we have grown!
