Searching for the POLINSKY family originating in the shtetl of Kalerka
near Zvenigorodka in the Ukraine.

My late grandparents, MOSHE and Pessie POLINSKY were born there,
emigrated to Argentina at the start of the 20th century under the BARON
HIRSCH SCHEME, but then moved to Britain where I was born. I now live in
Jerusalem.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks to all who informed me that geborin means born in German. What I
failed to explain was that it was the only word after the heading for
town. Someone who wrote to me surmised that the Hamburg officer could
not make out the town of birth that my relatives said, and simply wrote
they they were born.

I was reading copies of GENERATIONS, >from the Jewish Historical Society of
Maryland, which were donated to our IGS Negev library. In one of them,
someone was reminiscing and spoke of the "Riga Kurlander Verein" service
building and a Riga section in the old part of the Jewish cemetery in
Rosedale [east of Baltimore] at the intersection of Philadelphia Road and
Hamilton Avenues in Maryland. I think it might be well worth our while for
some volunteers in the area to go to the cemetery and copy down the
tombstones. If they are not Hebrew literate, photos can be taken and I can
translate the Hebrew. I am sure that there are Kurlander and Riga sections
in other Jewish cemeteries as well. Who would volunteer to help out with
this project? Could we discuss the possibilities of such a project on this
list?

I don't know if this cemetery might be covered by the cemetery project of
Jewishgen. Nonetheless, at least the names of the Riga Kurlanders should be
noted separately, in my opinion. I would appreciate your comments.

Re: Ethical Questions and Date Discrepancies #general

david fielker <david@...>

It's not only the dead who have hidden their true ages. When I eventually
tracked down a living cousin, I asked her for her date of birth, explaining
that only genealogists were permitted to ask such a question of a lady. She
said she would admit to the date on her driving licence.

Later I found her birth record, which gave a date six years earlier!!

However, in deference I put her preferred date in the family book, with a
note about the driving licence story.

people we have in the JewishGen community and also commend them on
their willingness to take the time to help others.

If you have not been to the site - get it a try.

Stephen and others interested in the Ukraine:
The town of Vinnitsa is in an area West of Kiev Gubernia. I think (but am
not certain) that what's being confused is a Gubernia and an Uezd (a
sub-section of a Gubernia). Vinnitsa appears to be part of the Podolskoye
Gubernie.

. . . . This Gubernia of the Imperial Russian Empire . . . might be in the
Ukraine . . . .

Ian Singer asks:

"They are names of what group of people? What's the purpose of the CD
for those of us who have never heard of it?"

The Family Tree of the Jewish People is online, in Jewishgen, at
http://www.jewishgen.org/gedcom. It is family trees sent in by
genealogists like me. Having a CD might be something to study at your
leisure when not on line; the information is undoubtably the same. You
must be new not to have heard of it, as it was created not so long ago
and contains the information >from the Dorot Center and others.

I think the word Victoria is looking at is not "geborin" but "geboren" which
in German, Dutch and Flemish means "to be born".

Joelle Lewkowicz van den Berg
**That is correct as to the meaning of the verb, but note that literally
"geboren" means simply "born" (i.e. it is the past participle of the
German verb "gebaeren" meaning "to bear") Thus, whenever the
abbreviation "geb." appears beside someone's name (e.g. "geb. 1857") it
means exactly the same as "b." (e.g., "b. 1857" )

Births and deaths on US boats landing at New York #general

Maurice Hoffman <Rosie@...>

Dear Genners

I have seen the jewish gen info file on the names of passengers landing.
Were there any procedures for the captain to report births and deaths on the
voyage? Are there any archives of ships logs. I am interested in the St
Paul that went >from Southampton to New York in 1906.

thanks
