Israel pre-1948 research #general

Klein Family <kleins4@...>

My wife's grandmother named Sonia Fuchsman traveled >from Kiev in 1918 to
Rishon l' Tzion in what is now Israel. She worked there as a mid-wife,
but then emigrated to the U.S. I would appreciate any suggestions about
research into population or census records in Rishon l'Tzion (or other
locations) during that time.

I keep seeing references to "Direct Descendants". Can somebody
inform me - and perhaps also others - what an "Indirect Descendant is?

==OK, we've had some answers to that.. Is there any term to indicate a
"direct ancestor" by which I mean an ancestor continuously in the unbroken
all-male line for men (i.e. my pgf'pgs'pgf' . . . ), and in the unbroken
all-female line for women

Re: Voter Registrations, Cook County, ILL 1910 - 1940 #general

Mimi Katz <geveret@...>

Do a search for the State of Illinois website and find the link to the
Secretary of State's office. Then look for the link to the (IRAD) Illinois
Regional Archive Depository in Chicago. There are many around the state,
but Chicago records are in the Chicago depository. There's a wealth of
information at these places, and I believe they are the most under-used
genealogical tool we have! They accept email inquiries; there fees are
minimal. The state death index includes several more years than the LDS
has filmed.

Can someone tell me where I would find Voter Registration Records for
Cook County, Illinios for the period 1910 - 1940 ?

great map site #general

Arnold Davidson <arnoldbd@...>

I also found this a great map sit for some locations but not for
others. Whereas Mapquest always shows the locations of stetlach found on
Stetl Seeker (JewishGen), Multimap doesn't recognize may towns in their
Search option. You should know some major towns in the vicinity of your
target before using Multimap and you must be prepared for language and
spelling variations on the name you are seeking. There were several towns
I searched that were found by Mapquest but not by Multimap.

I just found a really great map site on the internet at
http://www.multimap.com. If you click on the world map picture, and
continue to click away, you can find almost any little village. I found
dozens of small shtetls I have never been able to find on any other
internet mapping system.

LEBUS-London, UK and LIEBES-Breslau #general

Harold Lewin <harmir@...>

Researchers of either names Liebes or Lebus will be interested in a letter
written by Hans Liebes of Breslau in November 1938. Apparently found while
clearing out an office in London a few years ago, it constitutes a
desperate, guarded appeal for help in exiting Germany. The letter provides
a wealth of family information and includes proof of the connection between
the two names.
An ominous footnote states: Hans Liebes is absent. Ask most urgently for
advice and help. Those connected with either family should contact: Harold
Lewin - Jerusalem
