re ship route #belarus

Betsy Brazy <bbrazy@...>

The brothers in my DRAIKIN family (>from Ukraine) took a circuitous
route about 1916, traveling east along the Trans-Siberian Railroad (and
its Chinese equivalent) eventually to Harbin, China, then to Korea and
to Japan (Japan and Russia were at war, and China was a Russian ally,
so they had to pass through Korea to get to a Japanese port). From
Yokohama, Japan, they sailed to Seattle, Washington (USA). I assume
that it was on the <fontfamily><param>Times</param>NYK </fontfamily>Aki
Maru but have to check the National Archives in Seattle to confirm.

United States Holocaust Museum research department? Obviously,
volunteers will have to live in the greater Washington DC area.
Volunteers will not have to speak or write Russian. If you can
volunteer or want more details, please contact Peter Lande <plande@ushmm.org>.

At this time there are no Russian readers to fullfill requests for

of shtetls in Belarus and Ukraine where Jews once lived. In addition to
the acounts, the films have lists of residents.

I wonder if a new thread may not be as valuable to us all. It's
been said endlessly that the Port of Hamburg, along with the
Hamburg-Amerika Line, dominated the emigration trade during the
great tide (1885-1914). Most of the boats dumped the tired and
wretched of Europe's shores in NYC.
I will add one Port based only upon Declarations of Intent
1906 - Antwerp to NYC - gf >from Kovno, Lithuania -- Red Star Line
1910 - Antwerp to NYC - gf >from Bobruisk, Belarus

I suspect that the trip to Antwerp was over land.

Re: Horodetz Society #belarus

Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>

Please also be aware that he could have meant Grodno Gubernia.

My grandmother also told me that she remembers my ggf saying he was from
Grodno. Would it be more likely that he was born in Grodno and then lived
in Horodetz before he immigrated to the US, or that the society was
actually comprised of more than just people >from Horodetz?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: Ship Manifests and ports #belarus

Adarelanab@...

I hav found relatives on several ship manifests and routes as follows:
Liverpool-St. Johns NB - 1903;
Hamburg-NYC - 1904;
Libau-NYC - 1909;
Libau-NYC - 1912;
Bremen-NYC - 1912 (2);
Havre - NYC - 1914.

How they got to Liverpool and Havre is not clear to me, but there
obviously were many routes available. Almost all immigrants who
came through Canada are indexed in the St. Albans files available
at the FHC.

Dear Ava,

If you have your grandfather's naturalization papers, you want to send
for his Petition for Naturalization and the Declaration of Intention,
both of which state the name of the ship he was on and the date he
arrived.

I had that information and I too could not find my grandfather's name
on the manifest until I interviewed a great-uncle who told me that my
grandfather came on forged papers and was not Harry Rabinowitz when he
boarded the ship, but traveling under this uncle's father's name,
Mordechai Savitsky!

I have sent for the photo of my grandfather's ship >from the Mariners
Museum in Newport News, VA and they coldn't be nicer!

Good luck!
