I lived with my grandparents in the 1930's in England and remember well how important it was to receive and discuss letters >from family in the "Heime".I wonder therefore, would it be possible for our litvak sig or for Jewish Geneology to edit an electronic Yiddish letter scrap book, into which anyone
could post their family's yiddish letters.

They wouldn't have to be translated.

If enough accumulate, the scrap book could become an important Yiddish
literary and historical source - possibly even a latter-day Geneza.

Notes and extra names for Kishinev 1863,64 #general

Vladimir Tetelbaum

Hi,

Slowly I am making progress through Kishinev birth
records. To my surprise there are 60% fewer records
for the whole year 1863 than for 1864 and later. The
writing seems different too. I wonder if there are
other sources for birth records.

As usual I offer extra names >from copies I made for
myself. The list is divided by year and month, but
it is in no way complete. Let me know if any name
poses an interest and I will email more info (free of

Boston HIAS (Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) records are kept by the
American Jewish Historical Society. While their main facility recently
moved to NYC, they still maintain the Boston HIAS records, and I believe
most/all Boston-related materials, in their facility on the campus of
Brandeis Univ., in Waltham MA. Their holdings are described very well in
the following Infofile: http://www.jewishgen.org/jgsgb/ajhs.html

Make sure that you check _all_ of the Boston HIAS records, not just the
arrival records. I recently found a massive amount of correspondence there
regarding the efforts of my wife's g-grandfather and his cousins to help
out their cousins in Europe who had managed to survive the Holocaust and
who were in DP camps or elsewhere.

SANDERS from Holland #general

awverw <awverw@...>

Dear Genners,

I am searching for descendants >from the Dutch Sanders family originally
from Gouda, Rotterdam or The Hague whom left Holland during the passed
200 years.

One of them is Jacob Marcus Sanders, born Rotterdam 20-08-1853, married to
Betje Jacobson, born The Hague 22-11-1848. They had at least one son named
Marcus Sanders, born Rotterdam 13-12-1875. Jacob had a "cap" factory as
was told to me by relatives of him in Holland. This factory was in
America, England or in Canada. The don't remember exactly where.
One document menioned that he arrived >from Victoria (British Columbia) on

I would greatly appreciate all help.

To answer Stephen Esrati's question about the abbreviations LAB and OFP

LAB is the Landesarchiv Berlin. The Landesarchiv has deportation
records of Jews deported >from Berlin. These records come >from the files
(akten) of the OberFinanzPraisident agency, which looted the estates of
Jews deported to the death camps.

You might want to send an e-mail to the Berlin Landesarchiv inquiring
about the meaning of the other abbreviations you inquired about. Their
e-mail address is: info@landesarchiv-berlin.de

Hope this helps.

If you're only interested in finding people in one or two towns, searching
directly in online white pages (never use just one!!) is the way to go.
If you're interested in a region, however, there are better ways. The one
I prefer is as follows:

First, get the zipcode of the town(s) you're interested in from:
http://zip.langenberg.com/
This is a great site which allows you to do a number of things related to
zip codes, including giving you all of the zip codes with X number of
miles of a specific zip code. Once I determined that Denville, NJ was
07834, I searched for all zip codes within 20 miles (you can widen or
narrow the area searched), and found that they ranged >from 070xx - 079xx.
You're now ready to head to http://www.anybirthday.com/search.htm
(see below).

Alternately, you can search via the county. First, get the county that
Denville is in from: http://sipb-server-1.mit.edu/geo (this information
is obviously useful for a number of things). Denville, it turns out, is in
Morris county, NJ. Next, head over to "Jay's Computer Search" at:
http://www.jcsm.com/ This is another incredibly useful site. It's a pay
service that allows you to do a limited number of free searches per day;
I've never had a problem going over their limit and there's no
registration required. This site allows you to find such useful things as
all of the zip codes in an area code, all of the zips in a county, finding
a town (and it's associated zip codes and area code) by entering only a
portion of the towns name and no state, and other things. For this,
you'll want to choose "5 digit zip functions," and then you can get a list
of all zip codes in Morris counbty, NJ. Once again, you are now ready to
go to http://www.anybirthday.com/search.htm.

I recommended getting the range of zip codes first, because anybirthday
has the nice feature of allowing you to search by name and _partial_ zip
code. For example, because I learned that the zip codes for Denville and
the surrounding towns all begin with "07," I could search for BUCHWALDs
listed in anybirthday's database who were listed in any zip code begining
with "07." Note: don't forget that the zip code listed in anybirthday may
or may not be their zip code of residence. I found 18 people listed in
anybirthday with this name in this area.

Anybirthday only gives a zip code of course, so now it's back to
http://zip.langenberg.com/ to determine what the corresponding city is.
You can now go to some online white pages and try to find them; I
occasionally have better luck finding them in the SSDI. Here are three
online white pages (I have, on occasion, found people in each of them not
listed in the others):
http://www.aol.com/netfind/whitepages.adp
http://www.whowhere.lycos.com/Phone
http://www.tollfree.att.net/forms/people.html

Alternately, because only 30 BUCHWALDs showed up in all of NJ on the first
white pages that I tried, you can get a list of all towns in a county >from
JCS (or elsewhere), and simply go down the list in the white pages and
decide if any of them are close enough to Denville for you to contact (or
whatever you'd like to do with the info).

This type of search is not nearly as difficult as I suspect I've made it
sound <grin>.

Good luck!
