NYC Ferry sinking 1904 #general

Alan Radack <alrack@...>

My father remembered, as a young boy on the lower East side of Manhattan
,that a great disaster had occurred on the East River.in 1904 .the
sinking of a ferry laden with women and children on a day trip out on
the river. Over one thousand person died, several hundred were rescued.
He remembered the outpouring on the streets of the lower East side in
memory and in grief over this great tragedy. My dad's family had arrived
in March of 1904 and this sinking occurred in June so it was sharply
etched in his memory of those early years. The name of the ship was the
General Slocum.Apparently >from what I have read, the Lutheran Church on
East 6th Street , the sponsor of the outing, in subsequent years became
a Jewish Orthodox synogogue. Does anyone know the name of the synogogue
and the date it was established? Is there other information on what went
on in the area after the tragedy. Alan Radack, Swampscott, MA

sophie frankenberg <sophiemend@...>

Dear Michele,

I accidentally erased your address while replying directly.

I was wondering whether the ROZENBLATS you are researching in Kielce could
have been my relatives, originally >from Zamosc. My grandfather's eldest
sister, Beila[b. about 1880] married Moshe ROZENBLAT. They had 7 children,
and remained in Kiev after WW1. The whole family had spent the war years
there, and then only this branch stayed in 1918.

Could it be possible, that at some later stage they returned to Poland,to
Kielce? Maybe to escape the revolution?

Please answer, and fill me in on what you know.

Happy Passover

"Dear Friends, It's almost a year since I've last written to you and
"plenty of water has flown in the Tysmienica river" (or mountain brook,
depending on what year season somebody looked at it). Most of that time
I had to dedicate to my family who, for the last year required more
attention then ever. But when things started to return to their normal
path, I found some time to put into realization my idea of erecting a
very special Web Site for a very unique human entity with their special
social behavioural pattern which differentiates them >from other folks
originating >from other provinces or regions, different dialect,
different folkloristic patterns, sometimes even different attitudes.
Solidarity between one another and an urge to utilize "connections" in
order to help the same community member or even to prefer him >from among
other outsiders. Why? Because he is a Landsman ! Or in Russian, a
"Zemliak", Or in Italian a "Paesano" Because he, with his speech,
manners, sayings, jokes, habits, remembrances, songs, tales, reminds me
of my folks, Father, Mother, friend, etc... Of a world lost, who is not
existing any more... Instead of speaking so much, of being carried
away... See please the URL <www.Landsmen.org> . It is "still in its
diapers" and has plenty of errors which must still be corrected. And
there's quite more material waiting to be posted. And the navigation
system must be improved and there might be some inconsistences with the
Hebrew part for those who surf with the Netscape Navigator, and the
language must be corrected, I am aware of most errors. But some might
already get an idea of what its all about. I will gladly accept articles
, family tales, poems ideas for improvement, help. If some of you have
also a family Web-Site and he wishes that I link the to his site, I will
gladly do it. I intend to open a special memorial corner for persons who
wish to remind their dearest by dedicating remembrance inscriptions. In
the mean time, keep well, and have a nice Passover.

"Scrolls of Testimony" Specially Priced on the JewishGenMall #galicia

Carol Skydell <cskydell@...>

Our JewishGen Mall managers are pleased to let you know that the
Presentation Edition of one of the most moving chronicles of the
Holocaust, "Scrolls of Testimony" by the award-winning
Israeli writer Abba Kovner is available at the a very
special price of $79.95 for a limited time only. Normally
this book, written in the Jewish tradition of megillot or scrolls,
retails for $100.

More important than the advantageous price reduction is that this
compelling book...this testimony of the author interwoven with
eyewitness accounts of others, notes and excerpts of poetry
and prose, even last wills and testaments is an almost
liturgical account of the greatest tragedy to befall our
people.

Regarded by many as one of the great masterpieces of Holocaust literature,
"Scrolls of Testimony" took over ten years to research and write. The English
translation was a monumental effort accomplished by Dr. Edward Levenston,
former professor of English linguistics at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem.
The haunting paintings are by Samuel Bak, who, like Kovner, is a survivor
of the Vilna Ghetto.

Both the Presentation Issue and the regular edition are truly treasures.
Both are available now at reduced prices

http://www.jewishgen.org/jewishgenmall

The quickest way to find them is to click on the Browse button on the left
hand side of the Mall page and scroll down to the Specially
