JewishGen.org Discussion Group FAQs
What is the JewishGen.org Discussion Group?
The JewishGen.org Discussion Group unites thousands of Jewish genealogical researchers worldwide as they research their family history, search for relatives, and share information, ideas, methods, tips, techniques, and resources. The JewishGen.org Discussion Group makes it easy, quick, and fun, to connect with others around the world.
Is it Secure?
Yes. JewishGen is using a state of the art platform with the most contemporary security standards. JewishGen will never share member information with third parties.
How is the New JewishGen.org Discussion Group better than the old one?
Our old Discussion List platform was woefully antiquated. Among its many challenges: it was not secure, it required messages to be sent in Plain Text, did not support accented characters or languages other than English, could not display links or images, and had archives that were not mobile-friendly.
This new platform that JewishGen is using is a scalable, and sustainable solution, and allows us to engage with JewishGen members throughout the world. It offers a simple and intuitive interface for both members and moderators, more powerful tools, and more secure archives (which are easily accessible on mobile devices, and which also block out personal email addresses to the public).
I am a JewishGen member, why do I have to create a separate account for the Discussion Group?
As we continue to modernize our platform, we are trying to ensure that everything meets contemporary security standards. In the future, we plan hope to have one single sign-in page.
I like how the current lists work. Will I still be able to send/receive emails of posts (and/or digests)?
Yes. In terms of functionality, the group will operate the same for people who like to participate with email. People can still send a message to an email address (in this case, main@groups.JewishGen.org), and receive a daily digest of postings, or individual emails. In addition, Members can also receive a daily summary of topics, and then choose which topics they would like to read about it. However, in addition to email, there is the additional functionality of being able to read/post messages utilizing our online forum (https://groups.jewishgen.org).
Does this new system require plain-text?
No.
Can I post images, accented characters, different colors/font sizes, non-latin characters?
Yes.
Can I categorize a message? For example, if my message is related to Polish, or Ukraine research, can I indicate as such?
Yes! Our new platform allows members to use “Hashtags.” Messages can then be sorted, and searched, based upon how they are categorized. Another advantage is that members can “mute” any conversations they are not interested in, by simply indicating they are not interested in a particular “hashtag.”
Will all posts be archived?
Yes.
Can I still search though old messages?
Yes. All the messages are accessible and searchable going back to 1998.
What if I have questions or need assistance using the new Group?
Send your questions to: support@JewishGen.org
How do I access the Group’s webpage?
Follow this link: https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main
So just to be sure - this new group will allow us to post from our mobile phones, includes images, accented characters, and non-latin characters, and does not require plain text?
Correct!
Will there be any ads or annoying pop-ups?
No.
Will the current guidelines change?
Yes. While posts will be moderated to ensure civility, and that there is nothing posted that is inappropriate (or completely unrelated to genealogy), we will be trying to create an online community of people who regulate themselves, much as they do (very successfully) on Jewish Genealogy Portal on Facebook.
What are the new guidelines?
There are just a few simple rules & guidelines to follow, which you can read here:https://groups.jewishgen.org/g/main/guidelines
Thank you in advance for contributing to this amazing online community!
If you have any questions, or suggestions, please email support@JewishGen.org.
Sincerely,
The JewishGen.org Team

LUTOMIERSK late 19th Century records

[This message is being sent to multiple mailing lists; if you
receive more than one copy please accept my apologies] Late 19th Century Records For Lutomiersk *ARE* indexed; you have a unique opportunity to help Dear JRI-Poland researchers: This is a re-send of a message I sent in January. The update is that the data is ready to be posted to JRI-Poland as soon as the necessary financial conditions are met (please see the URLs mentioned below). The Lutomiersk list of family names is available at: http://www.jewishgen.org/jri-pl/psa/lutomierskpsasurn.htm I encourage you to visit this page. You may not be aware that some of your ancestors lived in this town! I certainly wasn't until I found a crucial document in the Lask microfilms. Regards, Marcos Frid ----------- Late 19th Century Records For Lutomiersk Making it accessible - on-line. It's happening now Dear Fellow Researchers, Many of us researching our ancestors >from Poland have found valuable information in the microfilms of the LDS Family History Centers. For the last several years, this effort has gained momentum because more than 900,000 of the records in the LDS collection have been indexed and are available on the Internet through the searchable database of Jewish Records Indexing- Poland (http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL). The indexes themselves provide valuable genealogical data and enable one to zero in on specific documents for further research. The LDS films for Lutomiersk end in 1868, just before we get to the records for the people we know through family stories or contemporary records. But now, indexes to Polish-Jewish records for the years not filmed by the Mormons - 1869 - 1874, 1876 - 1877, 1879, 1881, 1889, and 1892 - are in the process of development and addition to the Jewish Records-Indexing -Poland database under a groundbreaking agreement between JRI-Poland and the Polish State Archives (PSA). For information about the PSA project see: http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/psa/psastat.htm This means that when indexes are completed for Lutomiersk, this new material will finally allow you to expand your research into a time period that has been elusive and beyond your reach. In most cases this period - 1869-1892 - is the missing link in our genealogical chain - the time when our grandparents and their sisters and brothers were born and were married. Once these indexes are completed, you may simply print out an order form >from the Jewish Records Indexing-Poland web site and order the records >from the Polish State Archives. I have agreed to take on the responsibility of Lutomiersk Town Leader. Please join me in making this extremely worthwhile and exciting project a success. Your participation in this project can help bring to light information you may have never imagined you would find. Please spread the word to everyone you are in contact with who has an interest in Lutomiersk -- family, friends, co-researchers. All should be encouraged to participate. The Lodz branch archives has extensive records for the city of Lodz and many towns in the area. The list of towns whose partial, or complete, records are contained in the Lodz branch archive may be seen at: http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Lodz/ Updates on the JRI-Poland/PSA Lutomiersk will be available in the future at: http://www.jewishgen.org/JRI-PL/psa/psastat.htm, click on "Status Report: PSA Project Underway" which is the last line in the heading of this page. On the Status Report page, click on "Lodz" in the drop-down menu. Please note that many Jews moved to Lodz in the late 1800's and early 1900's. Therefore, if your relatives "came from Lodz" they may have had ancestors in nearby towns such as Lutomiersk. It may be worth to check! If you have any questions, please do not hestitate to ask. Sincerely, Marcos Frid Lutomiersk Town Leader marcos_frid@hp.com

Ted Margulis to Meet Ukrainian Nephew for First Time at LAX
#general
Ted Margulis <tedm333@...>
Brenda Widener, director, International Social Services, American Red
Cross of Greater Los Angeles will be present when Palm Desert, California resident, Ted Margulis meets his long lost nephew, Semion Margoulis. Ted Margulis, an American Jew (born and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota) of Ukrainian extraction, feared all of his father's family perished in WW II. Thanks to the efforts of the Red Cross International Tracing Services, he recently discovered he had one surviving nephew who is now living in Melbourne, Australia. Semion Margoulis, the nephew, will travel from Melbourne to meet his Uncle Ted for the first time on Friday,April 20, 2001. Ted has been involved in Jewish genealogy for over 27 years and is the Webmaster for http://jewishwebindex.com ... his own genealogical web site set up to assist others in finding their roots. Because this was, according to the Australian Red Cross, the second time that they were responsible for a reunion of this nature, the media, including TV, Radio and newspapers will be filming the event as Semion and his Ukrainian born wife step off of the United Airlines plane that morning at the Los Angeles airport. Semion's father, Moshe, was Ted's half brother. Moshe who had been born and raised in Tolnoye, Ukraine died in 1990, just four years before Ted was able to learn that he had been living in Berchichev, Ukraine (after having served in the Russian Army at Stalingrad) until his death. Ted, and his wife Shirley described their emotional meeting with Moshe's second wife when they met with her in Berdichev in 1990 and visited the cemetery where he was buried. The second wife had no idea where Semion and another son (and another brother of Moshe) were living as there had not been any contact for many years between son and father. Later, Ted learned that the second brother, along with his wife and a daughter, had been slaughtered by the Nazis in Kerch, which is in the Crimea. No further information has been found, but Ted still searches the Ukrainian Archives. Ted contacted the International Red Cross, and after six years, they faxed a message one day in September of 2000 to his home saying that they had located Semion living in Melbourne, Australia. After many phone calls between Ted and Semion (aka Simon) they will meet this Friday at the Los Angeles Airport, and then will be Ted and Shirley Margulis house guests in Palm Desert for the next ten days. This will be the first time that Semion, and his wife Svetlana, will meet family, as they never knew that there was an American family existing until the day the Red Cross contacted them. In one of the many telephone conversations with Ted, since they learned about each other, Semion stated that 'he was the enemy' and Ted's reply was ... 'you were never our enemy, only family'. Ted Margulis
