Tragic figure, the end of the story... #general

Dov & Varda <yknow@...>

I posted awhile back about my cousin, Jake Janofsky, who came to the
States >from Palestine and worked for his benefactor(my mpggm his paternal
aunt), served in WW1, and died spousless and childless eleven years after
the war of spinal meningitis. It turns out, that while there was no mention
of my cousin in the cemetery records of the now defunct synagogue to which
my ggps belonged, he was found in the cemetery by my old school chum, who
has made several trips there for me to photograph graves.
Not only did he find Jake, he found some other Janofskys about whom we
know nothing at all, including not knowing whether or not we are related to
them. As no records remain, this might stay a mystery. I think that they
are related and that my ggm brought them over for burial >from Vasilishki,
but don't know if this is possible.
The only family members that might know who they are cannot be informed
about this, because they serve on the cemetery committee with my chum and
he could get into hot water if they knew he sleuthed for me. Oy, the
agony....
Thanks to the jewishgenner who put me in touch with her son not knowing
that we were old school chums, when I originally posted a request for help
with contacting people with records >from the teeny and obscure cemetery in
which my family members are buried.
BTW, I lost my modem to a storm and then I had the badtrans worm. I lost
a lot of mail. If anyone wrote me during the last two weeks, please resend
the e-mails.

Re: EIDB Manifest Image Information #general

Jacqueline Fineblit <jackief@...>

Does anyone know how to *expand* a manifest image? I can get the
manifest (for the Arcadia on October 3, 1907) but it is either blank, or
so faint tht it is not readable. Any suggestions appreciated!>>>>>>>>

Paul
The problem with reading the Arcadia manifests may be due to a damaged
original. When I was at NARA in New York last summer, using Naturalization
records, I found the information for my husband's grandfather's arrival on
the Arcadia in March, 1907. When I viewed the microfilm of the ship's
manifest for that sailing I was disappointed to find that all the
information was illegible and it looked as if the paper had been chewed by
rats or destroyed by age and water.

I have been trying to find out if there is a better copy of the manifest at
some other holding, but so far I have been unsuccessful and I have had no
luck yet at Ellis Island on locating the ship or my husband's gf.

Since you live in Massachusetts, If it is not too long a trip, try the
resources at the Pittsfield or Waltham, MA NARA. I been to the Waltham
twice and have been quite successful in locating records. They are most
helpful and friendly there.

Military records WWII, Korean War? #general

helen saltman <hsalt@...>

I am trying to help a friend find his deceased father's military records.
Have already consulted Cyndi's List and have address and form # to request,
and know about the fire that destroyed many records.

My question:s: 1. Are there no duplicate records available?

2. Does one need the form, and if so, can it be downloaded somewhere on the
net?

3. Will Korean war records reveal the service man's WWII records as well?
My friends father served in the Army Air Force (discharged in 1946), was in
the reserves so called up for the Korean War.)
He also is especially interested in getting information about the
liberation of Dachau in which his father participated.

Any suggestions about where to look will be very much appreciated.

A gen member, Marvin Miller wrote me an interesting message susggesting I
search the surname Kunigis >from Vilkomer and my findings are interesting.
My ggf was called Abba Yitzchak and I find a Abel Yankel. I know he had
a brother called Louis in US and a sister called Rose, but I do not know
how the names on the Kunigis list would translate. What is a name for
Tsodyk for a male or the females: Lifsa or Gena or Brokha? the father's
name wa Hlavno. What would Gitla be translated? I do not want to force
anything, just continue my research. I need to check dates too. But I
am wondering about the names.

Rabbi Reiss #general

Victoria Reed <vic@...>

Looking for information on Rabbi Isaac Niemand Reiss of Zolkiew. Are
there any books that list rabbis >from this area of Poland, that was
Galicia? The other names for this town are Zholva and Nesterov.

I know nothing about him except that he was a relative. However,
figuring out who he was may establish a solid connection between our
Niemand and Reiss branches. We know that they married each other quite
a bit, but don't have enough history to find the links.

Thanks!

EIDB-How To Re-Spell a Name? #general

Jania Sommers <jsommers@...>

I have found several significant relatives on the Ellis Island site
(although seeing my father classified as a female was a shocker!), however,
have not found my father's oldest brother, George SOSENKO, who definitely
used that last name here in the US.

I believe he came in at Ellis Island at some point before 1906 as his first
child was born in New York that year.

My question is how do I successfully re-spell his name so EIDB will look
for it it some other shape besides Sosenko. I've tried obvious variations
and am not even sure the system is looking. This is a puzzle for me as
Soundex is not in place at the data base and I am math challenged so not
code smart.

Thank you.
