Re: Between Castle Garden and Ellis Island #ukraine

I forget the title -Russian arrivals in New York- or something like that -
covers the 1891 time period starts in the 1880's and plans when finished
to go into the early 1900's. 5 huge books so far in the series I believe -
formally sold by Avotaynu -now I think they only sell a CD index - various
genealogical societies have them like Washington DC JGSGW - also library
of congress etc. - likely the New York library too.

Russian spelling of GITTELMAN on Ellis Island site #ukraine

deli.herbweisberg3@...

I have tried every possible combination I could think of to find my
family's GITTELMAN connection on the ELLIS ISLAND SITE, to no avail.
They came to the USA in 1911 & 1921 >from Turov & Minsk.
I've tried spelling it with G,K, H, R, T, Z, B & C. No members of our
family are present with any of these starting letters even tho there are
many people named GITTELMAN. Can anybody offer a suggestion.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Reading Polish records #general

Stan Goodman <stan@...>

Are you sure that the record is in Polish? It would have helped to
know the approximate date and location of the record. If this is a
19th century (or anyway pre WWI) event, and if it happened in northern
Poland, it is not in Polish at all, but in Russian -- and you would
have experienced much frustration had you spent much time boning up on
Polish language and penmanship. If, on the other hand, the record is
from that part of Poland that was in Galicia, if may be in German --
and a similar frustration might have resulted.

In short, it would help if you would tell something about the time and
place of the birth.

Dictionaries don't help you to read script handwriting. :)

Does anyone have a suggestion as to what is the best way to find the
correct record >from this microfilm, short of bringing someone with me who

know anyone who reads/speaks Polish.

I think it would be wise to obtain a book on the Polish language and

please let me know.
