Camp Kitchener #general

sanvic366@...

Although this information was requested by Sylvia Jacobs, it might be of
interest to other genners. I visited relatives who came to Camp Kitchener in
March 1939 >from Vienna, Austria. One had been arrested during Crystal Night
on November 10, 1938. He was released after several hours when a physician
at the police barracks certified him as being ill. A young lady who lived
across the street >from him and worked at the Jewish Community Center,
arranged for him to immigrate to England. The other left after his place of
business had been "aryanized," i.e. taken over by Nazis. Both arrived in
Camp Kitchener on March 29, 1939.

Camp Kitchener was located near the towns of Ramsgate and Sandwich, it had
been a military installation, formerly called Richborough Camp, which had
been deserted and derelict since it was last used by General Kitchener's
troops in 1918. It was transformed into an emergency home for 300 refugees
from Germany in February 1939. The camp population reached 3,500 men, mostly
young German and Austrian Jews who were granted temporary sanctuary. They
reconstructed the camp, working >from 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. for their food,
lodging, and sixpence a week for pocket money. Fifty huts with thirty-six
double bunks each were the sleeping quarters. There were classes in English
after work. They could also leave the camp after work, but had to return
before the 10 p.m. roll call. Only two men were cited for misdemeanors, both
for overstaying their leave. All refugees remained at Camp Kitchener until
they were able to emigrate to the United States or other locations outside
of England. The camp was run on a self-sufficient basis. Of the sixty
doctors in the camp, all but two performed ordinary camp tasks. Artists
decorated the camp with pictures and mottoes. A former member of the Vienna
Philharmonic Orchestra organized a camp orchestra, and professional and
amateur actors and singers provided the entertainment.

I hope this information is helpful.

Re: Looking for Friedmans from Kosice Hungary area. #hungary

Barbara & Steve Wasser <swass@...>

Leah Friedman Levine is looking for Friedman's in the Kosice Hungary area.

According to the birth records at the archives in Presov, I have an
uncle Gejza HARTSTEIN who was born August 6, 1896 in Beretto
(Bretejovce) and the God parent, i.e Sondeck was Miklos Friedman.

Gejza died as an infant and we have no other records and do not have
any more information regarding this Friedman. Does he appear in
anyone's tree? I would think he must have been related somehow.

Regarding more Friedman info:

I just checked my data base and realized that Bernat aka Benjamin
Friedman was born in 1853 in Hungary. He married Pauline Frank and
they had five sons among them the late bandleader Ted Lewis. Family
history indicates that the HARTSTEIN family is related to Ted Lewis
aka Ted Friedman. Of course Miskos could have been a member of the
family too but I haven't been able to document that.

Hilary Henkin <hilary@...>

Dear Sand,
If the Pennsylvania privay laws will permit, you could order a copy of
the father's death certificate, which would provide you with the
location of his burial. That might, or might not, be easier than
calling all the cemeteries.

Also, there is an association for Jewish Funeral Directors. The page of
their website to search for Jewish Funeral Directors in a specific state
or city is at <http://www.jfda.org/listing_state_city.html>. There are
two listed for Philadelphia. I've had good luck this way.

Good luck!

I suggest you look at teh Encyclopaedia Judaica (under Soloveichik).
There you will find almost 4 pages of information.

The "Real" Nowogrod #poland

RAWhite123@...

I have determined that my great grandparents - Morris and Annie Posner - are buried in Washington Cemetery in Brooklyn with the "Chebra Bnai Hashwatim Anshei Navagrat Benevolent Association of the City of New York" Landsmanshaft. It is listed as a Polish group.

I believe that Navagrat (Nowograd) was in the Lomza Gubernia of Poland. But... since there are four Nowograd's in the current state of Poland, I am
not absolutely sure.

I have also determined that Chevra Shomrei Shaboth of Borough Park and Chebra Bnai Hashwatim Anshei Navagrat Benevolent Association petitioned to consolidate. The
petition was offered on July 3, 1929 and granted on July 5, 1929. The resulting corporation was named Shomrei Shabeth Anshei Novogrod.

Can anyone confirm the Nowogrod location or provide further information about the groups origin or the Landsmanshaft.

Thanx in advance for any assistance.

Dear Jewishgenners, I am having a problem with the EIDB accessing the
Original Manifest for the SS Furnessia arriving in NY on July 24th 1911.
It brings up the Campania each time I try. If anyone has had this problem
and knows how to get around it I'd appreciate the help. Alternatively who
should I contact to get the manifest I want.

I have a similar problem concerning the Willehad out of Hamburg or Bremen in
1895 to Ellis Island: calling up the original manifest results in a nice,
clear view of ship called the Trinidad. I ended up a the NY Public Library
and taking notes >from the microfilm. I also sent a note about the error to
the Ellis Island contact address but have heard nothing and have seen no
change in the past couple of months.
