US 1930 Census Update #9, New Website #general

Weintraub, Joel <jweintraub@...>

First, Stephen Morse, Dave Kehs, and myself are happy to
announce a new website to search the 1930 U S Census. See:
http://home.pacbell.net/spmorse/census

Second, Roll 4 was put out at NARA Laguna Niguel today of
NARA series M1931 which shows a table of addresses to census
district numbers for Manhattan, Bronx, Brooklyn, and other
communities.

Third, I found out that Kansas City, KS, not Kansas City, MO is on
M1931 contrary to previous information given me. I will have to
transcribe the MO city to add to my large cities not on M1931 or
in Soundexed states.

Fourth, if anyone is near the Syracuse University Map library
(NY), I now only need two NY maps to complete part of the
transcription process (Utica and Schenectady) and could use some
help with getting those maps.

Joel Weintraub, Dana Point, CA

Re: Cite The Authority #general

cfpottins2 <cfpottins2@...>

I wasn't aware that anyone was fighting over anything in this discussion
group. Members ask for help, others like myself offer suggestions, based on
what we know or remember. For instance, seeing a name that looked familiar,
I sent the enquirer a recollection about someone I knew with that surname,
just in case it was any use. Authority, what authority?
OK, so I might have been mistaken, sue me already!

ELLIS - Newburgh, NY #lithuania

Allen Rabinowitz <allenrab@...>

Dear fellow Litvaks,

I am trying to find descendants of Nathan and Mary ELLIS of Newburgh, NY.
According to the 1920 census, they had five children between 1905 and 1915
approximately. Eva, Lillie, Edna, Eleanor, and Milton. Nathan had a tailor shop, and family lore says that he was head tailor at West Point at one time.

Nathan was the brother of my ggf, Henry HARRIS. If you are or know of a
descendant, please contact me privately.

Thanks...

Gordon, Wachovsky #lithuania

Y & A Fried <fried@...>

I am beginning to do research on one side of my family. I will be making a trip to Lithuania in 5 weeks with a group of Rabbi and Yeshiva
students. Before I go I would like to get as much information as
possible. My maternal grandfather's maternal grandfather was named
R. Avraham Yitzchak Gordon >from Lithuania. Unfortunately I don't have a
city. The family tradition was that he was a prominent Rav. I don't know
if there is a relationship to Rav Eliezer Gordon, Rosh HaYeshiva of
Telz. His daughter Bessie or Basel Wachs ( Wachovsky)came to the US around the turn of the century and passed away in NY and was buried in Staten Island in the Chernoble society section. Does anyone know how to access the cemetery records long distance to find a place of birth?

Thank you.
Yehuda Fried, Jerusalem

MODERATOR'S NOTE: You might want to post your basic query to the Discussion Group of the Rav-SIG -- which focuses on Rabbinical ancestry.

scanning help needed #general

Stephanie Weiner <laguna@...>

Dear Genners,

I've photocopied roughly 90 pages of the Nowy Targ yizkor book -- these
pages are in English. I'm trying to scan these pages and send them to
Joyce Field to be included in the Yizkor Book section of JewishGen
(copyright permission is already received).

I'm not very experienced in the use of my scanner for textual material.
I've tried several avenues, none of which seems to work. I'll be happy
to initiate a phone call in the U.S.

Help!
