Re: VM 1335 Austrian Military Uniform #galicia

Willie46@...

I want to thank everyone who help to identify the uniform
in VM1335.

The most authoritative response said that he was a Sergeant
(Zugsfurher) in the Austrian Army ca. 1878 or later. He was
attached to a Landwehr (Infantry) batallion >from near Lwow.
He wears a markmanship lanyard.

1875 in or near Lwow (VM 1335). He is wearing a uniform that
nobody in the family can identify. I am hoping that someone
can provide the identification or a clue to its origin. I am
interested also in the meaning of the six stars on the lapel.

Family lore says that Israel was in the Austrian service, but
we are not even sure that this is an Austrian Army uniform. >>

Thanks.

was:Manifest help - is: the actual URL #galicia

Alicia Jensen <aliciajens@...>

Hello again, everyone.
There are so many wonderful people out there!
I woke up this morning to a mailbox full of attempts to decipher the
occupation of my gt. grandfather!
Here is what you all had to say:
2 - Brother ; 3 - Szoffer or shofer (chauffer, driver) 3 - Soiffer
(scribe); 1 - Trotter; 1 - Staffer; 1 - Hatter; and 3 - need more of
the manifest to tell!

So, for any of you who feel like going to the actual manifest, I
went back and found the exact URL (it is long!):
<http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipManifest.asp?MID=02135468250080337696&FNM=LALEL&LNM=WOHL&PLNM=WOHL&CGD=M&SYR=1912&EYR=1912&RF=1&SHP=Kroonland&ALTS=97%7C%3Fohl&ALTS=97%7Cwoal&pID=100932050074&lookup=100932050074&show=H%3A%5CT715%2D1885%5CT715%2D18850906%2ETIF&origFN=H%3A%5CT715%2D1885%5CT715%2D18850905%2ETIF>

To go to the 2nd page of the manifest, it is "previous" and not
"next". entry line 18, WOHL

Thank you all for your help and attempts! I have not written to anyone
personally yet, but please know you are most appreciated and I will be
sending you a note!

Thanks again and All the Best to all of you!

My great-great-grandparents are buried at Mt. Hebron Cemetery in
Queens, NY. They are in a little section of this giant cemetery set
aside for members of the Weisliczer Society. I presume this is a
Landsmanschaft and my hunting around on Shtetlseeker makes me
believe that the group was probably >from Wislica, Poland [Galicia]. But this is
guesswork and I can find no references anywhere to this society. Does
anyone know anything about this group?

Thanks. Greg Siskind

Because Oshmiany was in the area that was once
Lithuania, the 1858 Revision List for Oshmiany and
other towns in the Oshmiany District is in the
Lithuanian State Historical Archives.

LitvakSIG acquired and translated that list and the
translation isnow searchable in the All-Lithuania

Oshmana #belarus

Sheldon Clare <sheldonc@...>

I have seen several messages concerning the shtetl Oshmana. My
great-grandparents, MOSHE and BASHE KAMINSKI(KAMIONSKI) and my grandmother
BEYLE RIVKE KAMINSKI GRODZENSKI were born there. Moshe and Bashe were
supposedly burned to death in a barn fire about 1865 leaving 9 children. My
grandmother and perhaps 2-3 other siblings came to the US.
In his memory, the Moses Kaminsky Family Society was created and met for
many years in The Bronx, NY. My mother, DORA GRODZENSKI CLARE, was the last
of about 64 first cousins. She passed away in 1990.
