I vaguely remember an online version of Encylopedia Judaica that dated back
to 1906 or 1907. I would like to download this again but can't locate it.
If anyone could share it with me I will be very grateful. Thanks. Marilyn

The Times-Herald, the Evening Star and the Daily News were all bigger
sellers than the Post in those days, believe it or not. On the other
hand, the Post was owned by a Jewish family, the MEYERs, so that might
be the place to start.

John Meyers <meyersje@...>

Hello Geners

we have been searching for Meyers and Gerson across several states in RSA
and have found some key family members. I am trying to trace Jewish family
history based on the following:

Hi John,
Suddenly remembered Florence Maud Meyers. She married George Swinton. Do not
have any dates, nor does the Meyers name appear anywhere but Florence Maud
does as the spouse of George Swinton in an estate file. They had 3 children,
Harry Swinton, Jess Swinton & Jean Swinton ( my mother's cousins & my 2nd
cousins). Harry had no children but adopted 1. Jess never married & Jean had
3 or 4 children. Will see if her eldest child - Averil - has any information
about that side of the family.Think Florence died in 1937 but as they lived
in Durban, am unable to get information here. Jess & Jean were flower girls
at my mother's wedding.
Will be in touch,
Alan

Please contact me if you have any ideas or leads to follow

regards

John

area for an obituary for the following person- Maybe in the LA Times.
Irene Epstein born in 1917 and died December 19, 1966. Her parents would
have been Marcus and Florence Epstein. She had two brothers Benjamin and Joseph.
Her father, Marcus, was my grandfather Jacob's brother.
Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Sadly there was an attack of vandalism in the Jewish
cemetery of Zamberk sometime Sunday night. 49
gravestones were knocked down, some were broken. The
police are investigating, and so far believe it was
simply a case of destructive vandalism, and not
necessarily anti-semitic. I found reports only in
Czech. If anyone has relations lying in this cemetery,
I may be able to provide more information.

When you go past the first 111 entries, there is a comment (between two
entries in the table, "Andere Verfilmung, 2004". Following these are
the films of the original IKG registers - beginning with film number
2203448, and ending with number 1575352 (these are catalogued not in
numerical order).

In Austria there used to be, and I think there still is, the so-
called Heimatsgesetz, where every citizen has a hometown to which he
belongs, so to speak. I also think it was difficult to change the
hometown and it seems that Viennes Jews, originating in the provinces
or Hungary, had difficulty getting a Vienna "home registration".
According to "Dr. Bloch's Oesterreichisches Wochenblatt", a Viennese
Jewish weekly dated Jan. 1, 1901 this law changed on this day.
from then on an Austrian citizen who was living voluntarily and
continuosly in a certain locality could apply for acceptance into the
local "Home Community" (Heimatsverband) and the application could not
be refused by this community.
If there was an unfavourable or no decision within 6 months, the case
would be forwarded to the higher political authority, which would then
make the decision.
In several follow up articles the paper advises its readers to bring
their citizenship affairs in order and make the necessary
applications, especially Hungarian citizens, who may loose their
citizenship if they are residing more than 10 years outside Hungary.
