What languages were commonly in use in Latvia around 1880? Is there
anywhere I can find a map showing language spread around Europe/Russia
at the end of the century? Was the same Yiddish spoken across the
whole of Europe or would say, German Yiddish be different to Russian
Yiddish? Thanks for your time.
Lorraine,

There are several good maps on the Net that are displaying worldwide
distribution of the languages.
This one, in my opinion, is the most informative:

http://www.ethnologue.com/country_index.asp

Russian was the language of the administration throughout the Empire at the
late 19 century.

trying to find Lora HULL #general

HMW <h_m_w@...>

I am trying to email Lora Metelits Hull of PA who wrote an interesting
posting on Jan 16, 2002 concerning the Rokitno Yizkor website on jewishgen.
I tried the email address listed but it was bounced. If anyone knows her
email would you please send it to me or ask her to email me concerning her
family search (Koretzky) and Rokitno.

Thanks,

Another way to spell it #general

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

I thought I had seen all the ways that people spell Pikholz, but here is
a new one.

While chasing down my newfound Kansas City Pikholz descendants
in California, I found one on the California death index who listed the
mother's maiden name as PECKWOOD!

(I know we are supposed to consider all the possibilities...)

Chasam Sofer #rabbinic

Seflaum@...

Dear Rav-SIG Members,

I am posting this inquiry for a friend.
First: Was Rabbi Moshe SOFER (the Chasam Sofer) a Levite or a
Kohen?
Second: Does anyone know of a branch of his descendants living
in the general area of Bialystok, Poland, around the 1900s?

Thanks for any assistance in advance.

Regards,

Pages of Testimony - Rozdol #galicia

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

I have a printed list of Pages of Testimony given to Yad VaShem for
people born in or lived in Rozdol. Yad VaShem does not allow it to be
published, but I can answer individual questions.

The list contains two pieces of information - name and place of
residence. Nothing else.

from Yad VaShem's computers (which may go online eventually), you
can link to the Pages themselves.

The list has about 280 entries.

Re: Yiddish Program on NPR #general

LenLW <lenlw@...>

It sounds like an exciting program.
The problem is that I have not been able to find out how long each segment
will be. All Things Considered is 1 1/2 hours locally (4:00 - 6:30) so that
presents a bit of a problem.

Any suggestions?
