Hello SIG participants who can translate names >from Russian into English:

I've posted three pages to the ViewMate at
http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/index.html

Can anyone translate the "LERMAN" and "LERNER" names on the list?

Background:

In 1999, Sheri Meisel obtained a list >from residents of Starokonstantine,
Ukraine, that contains names of Jewish soldiers, as well as Jews murdered at
a mass grave site. A copy of the full list is at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum, 3 pages of which are now on ViewMate. Ms. Meisel's story is on the
JewishGen site at www.jewishgen.org/jgsgw/tripUkraine.htm

From Odessa to Dinivitz? #ukraine

David Roodman <droodman@...>

Hi,
I'd appreciate any help people can offer on my latest genealogical puzzle.
I just talked to my 98-year-old great-great-Aunt (born Ethel/Ettel GELMAN)
who says she and all her siblings, including my great-grandmother, were born
in Odessa. However, two Ellis Island manifests--one for her mother and all
the kids, one for her mother's brother--show their last residence as
Dinivitz, which I have learned >from helpful people on this list is
Dunayevtsy, near Kamenitz-Podolsk, which is in turn 245 miles (400 km) from
Odessa. (Ethel's mother was born Feige SCHMUCKLER.) Aunt Ethel says that her
father Haskel GELMAN was born in Kamenitz-Podolsk and came to Odessa to wed
Feige in an arranged marriage. Although the two cities are far apart, they
are well connected by the Dniester river, so I suppose this is plausible.
Haskel came to the U.S. three years before the rest of his family, so
perhaps in the interim, Feige and the kids left Odessa and went to Dinivitz,
where she appears to have had family. Make any sense?
One thing that was interesting is that Ethel pronounced her birthplace
"Odess". If this is in fact how the (Jewish) locals said the name, that
would make her story convincing. Can anyone tell me how it is/was
pronounced?
Thanks.
--David Roodman

Names: ROODMAN, BERG, SCHMUCKLER, GELMAN/GILLMAN, FIDDLEMAN, CHICK.
Towns in Ukraine: Belogorodka, Yampol', Dunayevtsy, Ternopil, Kupil,
Vyshgorodok

Lwow Elections list #galicia

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

There had been vague mention in this group of an elections list for
Lwow at Yad VaShem. I decided to have a look. Following is my
report.

I asked one of the assistants (Masha Levine) to help me locate the
material and she said that there were twenty-three paper folders in a
file called M52. The folders are in three boxes and these boxes
contain twenty-six folders. I am not sure what the last three are, so I
am including them here.

General
Everything is in Russian, which I don't read. Much is typed. It is stored
badly and the pages are often bent and dog-eared. It takes about
twenty minutes to get them up to the reading room >from the archives.
each folder has a cover page which says how many pages are in the
folder. They are in loosely, rather than attached. There is generally a
title page in each folder, but as I say, I don't know what they mean.
Sorry about that. I shall specify below where lists are to be found.

#1
One typed page, titled Hakaz no. 9

#2
One page handwritten

#3
Seven pages, three typed and three handwritten. These are lists with
names, birth years and addresses. The entries are numbered and
some seem to be missing between the pages.

#4
Sixteen pages. Handwritten text.

#5
Six pages. Two handwritten text, one typed and two more handwritten
lists on a printed form.

#6
Forty-two pages, nearly all handrwritten lists on printed forms.

#7
Two pages of handwritten text.

#8
Thirty pages. Eight pages of typed lists, most of the rest typed text. A
few of these pages are plastic, rather than paper.

#9
thirty-three pages. Six typed pages of text on letterhead, five pairs of
typed pages (like the Ellis Island presentation of passenger lists), rest
typed text.

#10
Three pages of typed text.

#11
One page of typed text, marked "page 3."

#12
Thirteen pages of handwritten lists, including names, addresses,
birth years. There is some overlap of pages and they are not in order.

#13
Three pages of typed text.

#14
Fifteen pages handwritten. Four of lists, the rest text.

#15
Four pages of handwritten names and addresses.

#16
Sixty-nine pages. Two text on letterhead, thirteen pairs of typed lists,
twelve pages of typed text, the rest handwritten text.

#17
Twenty-two pages. Sixed typed text, mostly on letterhead, one pair of
list pages, one page typed text, ten pages of typed names with some
additional information I could not identify, three more of typed text.

#18
One hundred one pages of typed and handwritten text. I did not
examine each page, but I didn't see lists.

#19
Forty-one pages of typed text.

#20
Three pages of what looked like statistics - totals in chart form.

#21
Eight pages of typed lists - name, birth year, nationality, and date
(1934-44) that is probably date of death or deportation.

#22
Forty-three pages of typed text which seems to be a day by day
narrative.

#23
Thirty pages of paired lists. (forms)

#24
Twelve pages of paired lists. (forms)

#25
Fifteen pages of photocopies of photographs and notes.

#26
Thirty-four pages of lists of names, with little much else.

Yiddish Language #galicia

Lancy

Lorraine Hershon asked:

"Was the same Yiddish spoken across the whole of Europe or would
say, [Galician] Yiddish be different >from Russian Yiddish?"

-----
By the late 19th century, the spoken Yiddish had adopted
differences in pronunciation as well as local expressions. The
language was basically the same. I would say you can compare it
to the difference between the British English and the Texan
English.... The written language was the same - German and Polish
printers sold their Yiddish books all over Europe.

Lorraine,

There are several good maps on the Net that are displaying worldwide
distribution of the languages.
This one, in my opinion, is the most informative:

http://www.ethnologue.com/country_index.asp

Russian was the language of the administration throughout the Empire at the
late 19 century.
