In 1999, Sheri Meisel obtained a list >from residents of Starokonstantine,
Ukraine, that contains names of Jewish soldiers, as well as Jews murdered at
a mass grave site. A copy of the full list is at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial
Museum, 3 pages of which are now on ViewMate. Ms. Meisel's story is on the

From Odessa to Dinivitz? #ukraine

Hi,
I'd appreciate any help people can offer on my latest genealogical puzzle.
I just talked to my 98-year-old great-great-Aunt (born Ethel/Ettel GELMAN)
who says she and all her siblings, including my great-grandmother, were born
in Odessa. However, two Ellis Island manifests--one for her mother and all
the kids, one for her mother's brother--show their last residence as
Dinivitz, which I have learned >from helpful people on this list is
Dunayevtsy, near Kamenitz-Podolsk, which is in turn 245 miles (400 km) from
Odessa. (Ethel's mother was born Feige SCHMUCKLER.) Aunt Ethel says that her
father Haskel GELMAN was born in Kamenitz-Podolsk and came to Odessa to wed
Feige in an arranged marriage. Although the two cities are far apart, they
are well connected by the Dniester river, so I suppose this is plausible.
Haskel came to the U.S. three years before the rest of his family, so
perhaps in the interim, Feige and the kids left Odessa and went to Dinivitz,
where she appears to have had family. Make any sense?
One thing that was interesting is that Ethel pronounced her birthplace
"Odess". If this is in fact how the (Jewish) locals said the name, that
would make her story convincing. Can anyone tell me how it is/was
pronounced?

There had been vague mention in this group of an elections list for
Lwow at Yad VaShem. I decided to have a look. Following is my
report.

I asked one of the assistants (Masha Levine) to help me locate the
material and she said that there were twenty-three paper folders in a
file called M52. The folders are in three boxes and these boxes
contain twenty-six folders. I am not sure what the last three are, so I
am including them here.

General
Everything is in Russian, which I don't read. Much is typed. It is stored
badly and the pages are often bent and dog-eared. It takes about
twenty minutes to get them up to the reading room >from the archives.
each folder has a cover page which says how many pages are in the
folder. They are in loosely, rather than attached. There is generally a
title page in each folder, but as I say, I don't know what they mean.
Sorry about that. I shall specify below where lists are to be found.

Seven pages, three typed and three handwritten. These are lists with
names, birth years and addresses. The entries are numbered and

By the late 19th century, the spoken Yiddish had adopted
differences in pronunciation as well as local expressions. The
language was basically the same. I would say you can compare it
to the difference between the British English and the Texan
English.... The written language was the same - German and Polish
printers sold their Yiddish books all over Europe.

By the late 19th century, the spoken Yiddish had adopted
differences in pronunciation as well as local expressions. The
language was basically the same. I would say you can compare it
