NYPL and NARA #general

caren b rubio <carenru@...>

Dear Genners:
I stopped by the New York Public Library this morning to look up my
grandfather's ship's manifest. He arrived in NY harbor in 1912. But as
someone here has already pointed out, the NYPL microfilm records only go
up to 1910. I was referred to NARA on Varick Street.

For anyone who is interested, the details are as follows:
National Archives - Northeast Region
201 Varick Street, 12th floor (enter on Houston Street)
New York, New York 10014
1-212-337-1300

Hours: 8:00-4.30 PM, Monday-Friday
Tuesday & Thursday: to 8:00 PM
(Open First and Third Saturdays of each month)

Travel Directions:
Subway: #1 or #9 IRT Local to Houston Street stop
Bus: M10 Seventh Avenue Bus to Houston Street
Car: A few blocks north of the Holland Tunnel.
Street parking is difficult. Garages are one block north of Houston
Street.

Good luck!

Manhattan Beach #general

Sandy Perloff <sproots@...>

I recently came across an old photo of a handsome woman standing next to her
car >from a family member who could not identify her. The back of the photo
says "Manhattan Beach." Is there another one besides the one in CA, which
seems unlikely? Curious Sandy

Hi,

Was there a "preferred" port of entry that Jewish
immigrants used on their way to settle in St. Paul,
Minnesota?

Thanks,
Vlad

A FoIA Question #general

Does the Freedom of Information Act apply to IRS records for
businesses during the early part of the 20th century? I'm interested
in finding out about a small business run by one great uncle in
Pittsburgh, and a larger company handled by another great uncle in
Savannah.

Ostrog Yizkor Book #general

The coordinator of the Ostrog section of the Wolyn organization in
Israel has given permission to JewishGen to have the following
yizkor book online: "Sefer Ostrog (Vohlin); matsevet zikaron
le-kehila kedosha (Ostrog book; a memorial to the Ostrog holy
community), Editors: Yitzhak Alperowitz; Chief Coord: Chaim Finkel,
Tel Aviv, The Ostrog Society in Israel, 1987 (H, Y, E,P), 436 pages"

Two separate tasks are needed.

1) English pages can be scanned with OCR software and submitted.

2) The remainder of the book would have to be translated.

I am hopeful that someone will volunteer to coordinate this important
project. Please contact me privately if you can help.

Social Security Information #general

Jeff T. Severson <JEFFTS@...>

Hi all,
About a month ago, I sent a request for a deceased relative's Social
Security information. Social Security sent me Form SSA-L997 which doesn't
list any prices on it. I also didn't find any listing for prices on their
website and when I spoke to someone there, they also couldn't give me a
price for requesting the information.

Today, I recieved a letter >from the Social Security office, with my form
enclosed, that the amount of my payment is incorrect and that my check was
not enclosed for $27.00. Is is common for the Social Security department to
charge money for information requests? If so, does anyone know why a price
is not listed anywhere?

Thanks,

Thank you everyone #ukraine

Larry Brikman

Dear Genners,

Wow, that was an overwhelming response!

Stupid me not to have just done a google search in the first place, right?

Well, again thank you to everyone who put in their time and effort for me.
It is most appreciated.

Now, if anyone can tell me if there was a massive evacuation on July 8, it
would confirm everything.

Warmest regards,

Larry Brikman

Ever Heard of Tchurnobolisk? #ukraine

KATZ AND KLEIN <dkbk44@...>

One of the mysteries I haven't been able to solve in over a decade of
research is the name/location of the town where one of my ancestors (KATZ
married to FELDMAN) lived just prior to being killed in the Holocaust. The
town is remembered by the family as "Tchurnobolisk" and I'm sure it's in the
Ukraine somewhere, probably Kiev gubernia.

Of course I've tried all the obvious...shtetlseeker, mapquest, looking at
old maps, WOWW etc. But I can't find something even close.

If anyone has ever heard of this town or a similar-sounding town...please
let me know!
