Dear Jerry & Sig,

We are especially lucky in the NYC area to have an enormous project accom=
plished by the Jewish Genealogical Society of NY This covers the many (t=
housands) of burial societies in the Metropolitan area. These include La=
ndsmanshaftn, Synagogues, Family Groups, etc. This list locates the buria=
l societies into the many
cemeteries in this area. =20

When you locate the cemetery you can contact it and find the plot of the =
group in the cemetery. This list is located on the Jewish Genealogical So=
ciety web page at www.jgsny.org. Click on the Cemetery Project and find =
the name of the group. The list will tell you in which cemetery or cemete=
ries the group had a plot. Frequently the originally purchased plot fille=
d up and the group purchased a plot at some other cemetery and in this ca=
se all of these plots are listed. =20

In this project, no individual graves are listed.

Some Belarus Resources for IAJGS conference attendees #belarus

Michael Steinore

For those attending the IAJGS conference:

Not knowing what they will have in the resource room,
I will be bringing three Russian language resources with
me:

1) A paper copy of a 1913 'Ves Bobruisk', essentially a yellow pages/white
pages directory which includes: train schedule for the L-R railway to Libau,
address listing for 400+ merchants, most Jewish, lists of Jewish doctors,
dentists, feldshers, etc. There's too much to mention. Covers the city of
Bobruisk only.

2) a paper copy of a Minsk gubernia gazetteer containing
the names of over 14,000 inhabited places in Minsk gubernia. Much more
information on this is at
http://www.angelfire.com/ms2/belaroots/mest2.html

3) Microfilm reel 24 >from the Extraordinary State
Commission Records. This reel contains holocaust
victim lists >from several towns in and around what is now
Belarus, many of them quite readable. For more info,
go to
http://www.angelfire.com/or/yizkor/rg22002m.html

and select the 'Notes on Reel 24' link.

I guess the best way to contact me would be by e-mail
if you feel these could help your research.

Seeking Cataloguer/Researcher for Important Holocaust-Era Project #general

Iris Posner

One Thousand Children, Inc. (OTC) is a non-profit research and education
organization in Silver Spring, MD. Our mission is to document the
experiences of the only unaccompanied children rescued >from the
Holocaust by the US between 1934 and 1945. There was recently a first
ever national reunion of and conference about these children and their
rescuers in Chicago. You can read about it at our website:
www.onethousandchildren.org

We believe that one of the most important tasks to be done pertaining to
the OTC story is to develop a catalogue or finding aid related to this
subject. It would contain a list of all the archival resources in
various institutions/repositories and in private hands, that pertain to
the OTC story and would be made available to museums, academic and
research organizations as well as the public. This would ensure that
future generations of Americans and researchers would be able to find
information pertaining to this era of history and would also provide the
basis for developing a unified OTC collection in one repository.
Specifically, we are hoping to find a doctoral student perhaps, in
library science maybe specializing in Judaic Studies, that would do a
thesis or project resulting in such a catalogue or finding aid. If you
have a personal interest or know of anyone who might or know of any
academic/research contacts of which we might inquire about such a
project, we would like to hear >from you.

Re: Success on Census - Reversing Names #general

Linda <altmanlh@...>

This is very true. You should always try switching. I have seen several
census pages where they list the head of household as Surname, Given name
and the rest of the family as Given name, Surname. This is especially
important to use if you are looking through indexes, as the data entry
people should type the entry in exactly as it is written without making
their own interpretations.
