Seeking Cataloguer/Researcher for Important Holocaust-Era Project #general

Iris Posner

One Thousand Children, Inc. (OTC) is a non-profit research and education
organization in Silver Spring, MD. Our mission is to document the
experiences of the only unaccompanied children rescued >from the
Holocaust by the US between 1934 and 1945. There was recently a first
ever national reunion of and conference about these children and their
rescuers in Chicago. You can read about it at our website:
www.onethousandchildren.org

We believe that one of the most important tasks to be done pertaining to
the OTC story is to develop a catalogue or finding aid related to this
subject. It would contain a list of all the archival resources in
various institutions/repositories and in private hands, that pertain to
the OTC story and would be made available to museums, academic and
research organizations as well as the public. This would ensure that
future generations of Americans and researchers would be able to find
information pertaining to this era of history and would also provide the
basis for developing a unified OTC collection in one repository.
Specifically, we are hoping to find a doctoral student perhaps, in
library science maybe specializing in Judaic Studies, that would do a
thesis or project resulting in such a catalogue or finding aid. If you
have a personal interest or know of anyone who might or know of any
academic/research contacts of which we might inquire about such a
project, we would like to hear >from you.

Re: Success on Census - Reversing Names #general

Linda <altmanlh@...>

This is very true. You should always try switching. I have seen several
census pages where they list the head of household as Surname, Given name
and the rest of the family as Given name, Surname. This is especially
important to use if you are looking through indexes, as the data entry
people should type the entry in exactly as it is written without making
their own interpretations.

I hope the following will help all genners. While searching on the
census through ancestry.com, we found Hyman JACOBS. However, the catch
is that we put him in as Jacob HYMAN, and up he came with all of the
children we know to

be the right ones.

Good luck to all of us!

Re: Passports #usa

GreGG <gregg@...>

I know that when my father came here in 1927 he had to answer verbal
questions asked by a person at the American Embassy in Lviv. One of
the
questions was "how many legs does an American chicken have"?
Errol Schneegurt LI NY ESLVIV@...
AFAIK there was no American embassy in Lwow at that time - probably a
consulate, since Lwow was part of Poland and the embassy was in Warsaw.

Grzegorz

MODERATOR NOTE: AFAIK is an acronym for As Far As I Know.

TETEIEVSKY-TESKEY of Canada #general

Ida & Joseph Schwarcz <idayosef@...>

I have reason to believe that some of my mother's TETIEVSKY relatives
settled in Western Canada and changed their name to TESKEY. A request to
Irma Penn, Archivist of the Jewish Heritage Center of Western Canada,
Winnipeg, resulted in a six page report listing many people by that name.
They all seem to have lived in the Saskatoon, Saskatchewan area. However,
most of the people on the list are dead.
Since I cannot travel to the International Conference which will be in
Canada this year, I wonder if someone would be able to track down a living
Teskey for me. Of course this only works if the Teskey was indeed once upon
a time Tetievsky!
Thanks in advance

Passports #general

Errol Schneegurt

I would like to know what a person would need to supply to the controlling
authorities in the Eastern European countries and Russia in order to get
an approved passport before 1920. I am assuming that at minimum some
record of birth would have been needed.

Ship Records #general

Errol Schneegurt

I have a question that the answer seems obvious.
On the ship manifests there are columns that relates to the persons
ability to read and write. The notations on the ones that I am looking at
are overwhelming yes to both questions. I would have to assume that they
are referring to the persons native language and maybe Yiddish in the case
of a Jewish person.
