In my continuing research on JUDELOWITZ families, I requested copies of all
records for the above DM codes. >from the Jerusalem/Jaffa/Haifa Consular
records, using the JGS Greater Washington name index. The records are from
1857-1917. I have received the available copies and transcribed all of the
pertinent data which is shown below. I have included many of the other
names in these records.

I am posting this as hopefully it will be useful to some of you. I also
hope that if you think there may be a link to your research, you will send
me a copy of any JUDELOWITZ data you may have. Even if there is no
apparent link but you do have some data, I would love to have a copy. I
have hundreds of unlinked records but as I get more data, some sense of
order is appearing.

Apparently Harvard U library has a collection of Lodz newspapers. Has anyone
any knowledge of that archive / can recommend a contact at the library? many

Dear Fellow Lodz Area Researchers:

I am proposing the establishment of a new project to translate the
approximately 300 Polish biographies of prominent Jews in "Stary Cmentarz
Zydowski w Lodzi" (The Old Cemetery in Lodz), published by the Jewish
community of Lodz in 1938. Please refer to this page for a description of the
book:

In a nutshell, this book contains the Lodz Chevra Kaddishah records of the
Old Lodz Cemetery, >from 1822 through 1922, with a separate section on Polish
biographies written by two prominent historians. It is the biographical
section that I propose we translate into English.

To begin this project, we will need a coordinator (or coordinators) who will
be in charge of an all-volunteer group. Once we have a coordinator in place,
he or she will be asking for volunteer translators. At this point, please
contact me *only* if you are interested in coordinating this project.

Here's an example of the amount of information contained in just one
average-sized biography:

Polish biography # 794 of Chaja Fajga Rabinowicz:

"Chaja Fajga RABINOWICZ, wife of the Przysucher rabbi Jerachmiel Jehuda
Meir, son of the Przysucher rabbi Jakob Icchak Elchanan, grandson of the
Przysucher rabbi Jerachmiel who again was the son of the famous Tsaddik
Jakob Icchak 'the Holy Jew of Przysucha'. Chawa (sic) Fajga's husband,
Meir RABINOWICZ, took over the rabbinate in his home town after the death
of his father in 1872. As the income of this rabbinate could not even
cover the most modest needs, the energetic Fajga R. started to trade in
manufaktura (fabrics), driving often to Lodz to buy merchandise. One day
she left for Lodz when she was 8 months pregnant. Because of the long and
arduous trip on a jolting cart Fajga R. miscarried and died a few days
later in Lodz. Her father Jakob Dawid KALISZ, the Rabbi of Mszczonow,
attended her funeral. Fajga R. left behind two daughters. One of them
married Rabbi Izrael Aron PADWA, who after the death of his father-in-law
Meir R. took over the rabbinate of Przysucha. Aron PADWA was the grandson

great-grandfather's 1928 death certificate >from Brooklyn, N.Y., his mother's
maiden name was Elka Smolen. She would probably have been born in the 1840s
and was >from Rietavas (Ritova) Lithuania. I believe if you check some of the
tax list entries for Rietavas and nearby communities Garzgdai (sp?) and
Plunge, you'll find lots of people named Zaks. Perhaps that's the same as

looking for is *Sofrim*. The point is that the Subject line is misleading,
so that people who might have been interested in helping with your search
may not be tempted to read your message, while others (like me) will read
it to little avail.

I can, however, tell you that scribes are not necessarily Levi'im; I do
not think there is any preponderance of Levi'im among them. My ggf, not a
Levi, was a scribe.

As for name changes, I think *H.ARUVI* is too restrictive, even as a
translation. You would have to consider names like *'ILAN* (tree),
*'ETZIONI* (not a translation, but a phonetic play on another word for
tree), and probably anything beginning with B. I don't know how many
BOKSENBAUMs there are in the Israel telephone directory, but I would
think that a letter typed on your computer, with umpty-leven copies
printed out in one fell swoop, would be your best and most economical bet.
Especially if you can send them all in envelopes to a colleague in Israel
for local mailing.

I wish I could offer advice about a guild of scribes to narrow your
search; perhaps someone else will do so.

I am reasearching ZARCHIN and all of its variants. Jewish Gen has been
instrumental in my education of records researching.
One thing is clear: I received a document that lists this name (ZARKHIN)
as showing up fro the first time in 1834 in Belarus. The newest family
story says that before Belarus, we were in Germany. I am assuming that
the name was only official in 1834 in Belarus and that it might have been
around in some wya, shape or form.

I haven't the slightest idea how to research Germany previous to 1834.
