Robinson/Friedheim Town(s) of Origin #lithuania

Carol J. Robinson <caroljr@...>

I am trying to confirm the town(s) of origin of my Robinson family. My
grandfather was born in London, but his parents and grandparents came
from Russia. I was told they were >from the Vilna area. I have been
able to track down two pieces of evidence regarding their origin:

1. Isaac and Betsy (Yochabeila) Robinson's manifest. Their places of
birth listed on the manifest are hard to read but appear to be Galivan,
Gelivan, or Gelnaii, Russia. Yochabeila's maiden name was Freidheim,
and I found a Freidheim family arriving at Ellis Island as follows:
Sore and Chame Freichleim (children, last name mistranscribed) and Beila
Freidheim (mother, joining husband Carl Freidheim in NYC), January 02,
1904, place of residence Gelivan and Gilivan, Russia respectively.

2. Naturalization papers for Louis Robinson, Isaac and Yochabeila's
son. His birthplace (and that of his wife, Rachel) seems to read Velina
Russia, though the first letter is not absolutely certain.

I tried ShtetlSeeker and Shtetls of Lithuania and don't feel confident
that I have properly identified these locations. I would appreciate any
thoughts and information regarding them (and of course any contact with
anyone connected to these families). My Robinsons and Freidheims lived
in Chicago, Illinois once they arrived in the United States.

Genealogy of Arthur MILLER #general

rromem <meirromem@...>

Dear Genners,

We are searching for the names of the parents of the playwright Arthur
Miller. Also their shtetl back in Lithuania (we think).

A possible link may be a Mark Miller in Louisville about 1924, perhaps a
cousin of the parents of A>M>

If there is anyone who can help please contact me privately.

Thank you,
Ros Romem

Chana/Chasa #general

Elynn Boss <bossgen@...>

I'll add my two cents. My Hebrew middle name is Chana, named for my
great-grandmother Chana. Anna is on her death certificate and
gravestone, and she never learned English. My grandmother always called
me Chansie.

Re: Family lists for Vilna after 1858 #general

Marty <marty@...>

I can't answer Peter's question but have one of my own on the same subject.

How complete was the "last full revision" for Vilna that took place in
1858?
Did it all survive?
How much of it in part of the ALD?

I have looked around on the ALD environs and can't seem to find any
discussion of how complete/incomplete the revision lists are or whether or
not they are all on-line.

Thanks

Chelm Surnames: LEBENSBAUM / SPOSOB #general

Yaacov Slizak <yslizak@...>

Dear Friends,

The Chelm records out of JRI-PL show up the following Birth entry:

Name: LEBENSBAUM Salomon, son of Jankiel and Pina SPOSOB - b:1938

Do any of these surnames mean anything to you? I have been
researching the SPOSOB surname for a while, and this is the first
time I came across a SPOSOB in Chelm. All of them were >from Lyuboml
or Kurytnycja (Ukraine) or Dubenka (Poland). Not far >from Chelm,
though...

Any information will be appreciated.

First Name: Kazimiera #general

Yaacov Slizak <yslizak@...>

Dear Friends,

Is the polish first name "Kazimiera" a typical Jewish one? I have never
heard of this one.

A Polish pal friend of mine is called SPOSOB - surname I am researching -
but his family (up to grandparents) have no knowledge of any Jewish
heritage.

His grandfather is called Roman and he's >from Radzyn Podlaski (Pol). His
grand-aunt is called Kazimiera and she's >from Ivano Frankivsk (Ukr).
