Surname BROMAN from Poland to New York and Philadelphia #general

mike <grunt614@...>

Hey there everyone,

I was hoping that someone would assist me in my quest. I have been
searching for my great grandparents and great great grandparents.

My great grandparents were Samuel Broman and his wife Feigla maiden name
Borenstein. In 1909 they were living on 223 Broome Street in Manhattan New
York. In 1911 they were living in Philadelphia. In 1913 they were still
living in Philadelphia on 324 Fitzwater Ave.

After that Samuel died and the rest of the family I was told went back to
Poland between (1915-1925) most of them died in the Holocaust.

In 1905 my great grandfather Hirsch-Icek Broman (Harry) and his wife
Sura/Sara maiden name Barron were living in New York until they both passed
away. The only information I was able to locate for them was there Ellis
Island Shipping manifest. I don't have a way to view the census and I have
exhausted all the Avenues that I am aware of. If anyone has the ability to
check the census and anything else I would appreciate the help.

1911 Ireland Census - LERMAN found #belarus

Shana Egan <segan@...>

It is sometimes difficult to obtain information >from the Irish census
because people were not listed as to where they lived, but by where they
physically were at the time of the census. Thus if someone was visiting a
friend at the time of the census, they would be listed with the friends
family, if you were at a business you would be listed with others at the
business, and so forth. Someone looking for a peddler could spend their
whole life looking for him in the census.

My other half is doing extensive research on his family in County Mayo. He
came across the following information in the 1911 Census. Since the name
sounds Jewish he thought one of you Genners might be interested in it.

Lerman, Abraham Joshua
Castletown, Lackan Parish, County Mayo, Ireland
Age 30
Single
Not Catholic
Could not read or write Irish or English
Occupation was a "Pedlor"
Born in Russia
Was visiting the home of Patrick and Julia Lynott at the time of
enumeration.
I hope this helps someone.

ViewMate - AMSTIBOFSKI, SAYFER, GLASS, or KLEIN family #lithuania

Paul Gordon <flash@...>

I have posted two related photos on ViewMate. One is of a house in
Lithuania; the other is a closeup of the family members in the first
photo. You can find them both at
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html.

ViewMate Photo 1776 - The house in this prewar photo was probably in
Jurbarkas (Yorburg), Kaunas, or Ariogala, Lithuania. The house number
is either 35 or 36. Does anyone recognize the house? Can you tell from
the architecture which town it was in?

You can link directly to the photograph at:
http://www.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/source/vm1776.html

ViewMate Photo 1777 - The likely surnames of the people in this prewar
photo >from Lithuania are AMSTIBOFSKI, SAYFER, GLASS, or KLEIN. The
people are probably the daughter, grandchildren, and in-laws of Maische
Leib FRIEDLAND of Ariogala. The photo was likely taken in Jurbarkas
(Yorburg), Kaunas, or Ariogala. Does anyone recognize these people?

You can link directly to the photograph at:

Please send any responses directly to me. And thanks for your help!

I just wanted to add my two-cents to this thread...I also would love to know
what school(s) would have been used for higher education in late 19th/early
20th century Kiev Gubernia. My great-gpa was supposedly a "university
professor" but I can't figure out where! He lived in Bielopole (Bilipili)
just east of Berdicev, but I know the family had connections in Kiev city.

coincidence #general

HENKEN9@...

Genners,

Today I came upon a wonderful coincidence. About one year ago I was
contacted by Adam Katzeff of Sweden and Debra Katz of California. They had
family that lived in Cesis (Wenden) Latvia at the same time that mine did (my
mgm, her sister and parents). At the turn of the last century Wenden's
jewish population numbered between 20-40 families, so we agreed that it's
almost certain that the families knew each other.

The story took a strange twist today when I noticed that the Katz/Katzeff
family had also lived at one point in Siauliai, Lithuania. As it happens, my
ggm was >from there, as well. This has sparked discussion as to whether we
may, in fact, be related. The thinking here is that in a society that was
not terribly mobil (especially for jews), you have people >from a modest-sized
town ending up in the same very small town. And at that, the 2 cities are at
some distance >from each other. One is tempted to believe that there must be
familial ties at the root of this relocation.

To this point we have yet to discover any surnames in common. Have others
discovered such migration patterns in their research? And were the people
related?

Thankful for all responses and speculation.

Found a manifest for a relative who was Debarred >from entry (his sons were
admitted). My question is how do I discover why he was debarred, and where
he was sent. Would it be on another manifest for the same ship he arrived
on? Any suggestions welcome. NOTE: He arrived in Galveston, TX July 17,
1913 on the ship Hannover which arrived >from Bremen.

In the past few weeks, I have sent messages to people who have listed their
names and who and where they are searching gathered >from the Family Finder.
I cannot understand why anyone would take the trouble to list family trees
and other information to connect with possible relatives or at least others
who are searching the same names and shtetls and then not answer them. This
is not only frustrating, I find it downright rude. Even if you know there
is no connection, an answer with a "no thank you" is welcome so that you
know there is someone on the other end of the email.
How many others have experienced this phenomenon?

Re: Zvi by Hebrew name. #general

Carlos Glikson

Re. Mario Stecher's "my hebrew name is Jaim ben Zvi. My real name is Mario
Jorge Stecher... I never think to search by my Hebrew name. Is this
important?" I believe of course Mario's Hebrew name is important but
probably the number of results in look-ups by first name will be very
difficult to manage! (please note Jaim's phonetics in Spanish are equivalent
to Chaim)

There are cases as mentioned yesterday by Maria Torres of unexpected and
confusing inversions. These make the first name the last: " Frustratingly,
Isidor was occasionally in the habit of using "Isidor" as a surname and
Philip as a given one. Even more occasionally, he uses Israel for a first
name, and the Hebrew inscription of the tombstone calls him Ytzack." This
same "accidents" could happen with Zvi.

Perhaps Mario should also refer to Warren Blatt´s infofile with his great
presentation on Given Names. He will be able to learn about the relations
for Hebrew Name: Naftali, Biblical Symbol: deer, Hebrew kinnui: Tzvi, and
Yiddish calque: Hersh. Warren's presentation is found at
http://www.jewishgen.org/infofiles/GivenNames/index.html

So if Zvi goes in the family, Naftali, Hersh and variants
(Naftali/Naphtali, Hirsh/Hersh; Tzvi/Tsvi/Zvi ...) are names that
should require Mario's attention when going over possible sources of
different nature.

Hope this helps!

Town of P'shischah & Rabbi Ha Yehudi Ha Kadosh #general

Hello Jewishgenners,

Is anyone familiar with the town of P'shischah? In 1813 this town was
listed as Poland. I'm not quite sure
where in Poland this town could be or whether borders shifted and it is now
considered within a different
country.

I recently discovered that my GGrandmother is a direct descendant of Rabbi
Yaakov Yitzchak Rabinovich or known as Ha Yehudi Ha Kadosh. Where can I
find more information regarding him and his lineage.

Thanks!
