The MENZERS of Mainz--and their KALONYMOS ancestry #rabbinic

MBernet@...

Does anyone know the ancestry of the MENZ/MENZER/MAINZER line of
rabbanim in Mayence? Is it possible to trace their ancstry to the
first rabbanim of Mayence, the Kalonymos family of Lucca?

Were the MENZ/MENZER/MAINZER line of rabbanim Levi'im?

Shabbat Shalom and Mo`adim lesimcha

I am the web author of Shtetlinks site for Svisloch, Belarus.
http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/Svisloch . I consider it an
important part in recreating communal life to include a list of the
town's rabbis. Can anyone help me with more information about these
men? They were either rabbis (scholars) in Svisloch or born there.
If there are other rabbis or scholars that I have missed, I would
also appreciate their names.

1. Rabbi Ezekiel Katzenellenpogen, Rabbi of Svisloch. References to
him in Neil Rosentstein's books. Especially interested as to
whether he left descendants in Svisloch. Also what years he was
there? Does anyone know what surname he or his descendants used?

2. Rabbi Meir Yona of Svisloch first published a volume of the
classical halachic work "Ha-Ittur", (written by Rabbi Isaac ben
Aba Mari of Marseille, a contemporary of Maimonides), in 5634
(1836) died at the end of the 19th C.

3. His son Rabbi Motye.

4. Shneur Zalman Pines rabbi in Svisloch died 1903.

5. Rabbi Yossef Rosen - Son in law of Rabbi Dov Ber Galov, Rav gaon,
great in Torah, famous. Born in 1865 he was elected Rabbi in
Svisloch 1903, He immigrated to the United States and in 1926
became rabbi in Passaic, NJ. He died 1954.

6. Rabbi Mordechai Idelberg

7. Rabbi Chaim Jacob Mishkinski the last rabbi of Svisloch. Murdered
with the community.

8. Rabbi David Mejzel.

9. Rabbi Ahron Kotler, born Svisloch 1892 and moved to the United
States in 1940. His father Shneur Zalman Pines had been rabbi in
Svisloch.

10. Scholar Hirsch ben Mordecai Edelmann 1805 - 1858, born in
Svisloch was a scholar of Hebrew manuscripts at Oxford
University. Died in Berlin. Encyclopedia Judaica has a
biography.

I am especially interested in descendants that might have been in
Svisloch and raised their families there.

Thanks you very much,

Re: Drapers Traveller? #general

RTWhite <rtwhite@...>

Any travelling salesman of that time period was commonly called a 'traveller'.
Indeed, in the US, there were trade associations for each, ie: The Shoe
Traveller Association, The Hat Travellers Association.
Perhaps this terminology was more elite than carpetbagger.

We are posting this message on behalf of Reina Benaderet de Navarro. The
message was received in Spanish. This is the translation:

<< My grandfather: he was called Zigmund MARKIEWITZ BROSCA (at least this
is the way he appeared in his documents in Uruguay), my mother went two
years ago to the Polish embassy in Uruguay (that is where my grandfather
lived) and they told her that his last name was MARKOWICZ, been born in
Poland in 1903, in the city of Sosnovicz [Sosnowiec],but it seems that he
went later to Oberchlesing. His father's name was Moises Markowicz, his
mother Blima Brosca.

According to the Polish ambassador my grandfather had a brother called
Jacobo Mayer Markowicz born in 1901 married with Estela Malka LIBERMECZ,
they had two children, Moises Markowicz born 21/09/1929 and Frimeta
Markowicz born 31/12/1930. According to the information that I have (also
from the embassy) there was a concentration camp in Sosnovicz and almost
all those that were Jews died. According to what my grandfather told us,
we think that his parents were farmers.

What we did not manage to understand with my mother, is why we received a
request to claim some account in Switzerland (In Re Holocaust Victim Assets
Litigation) if we never tried to find out or demanded anything, how did
they found out of grandfather's existence and how did they know where we
lived? I believe that the form arrived in the yr. 2000

I salute you and hope that you can help me.
Thank you very much. Shalom, Reina >>

Shalom and happy Sukot holyday to all.

For few years I am trying to locate and get in touch with Trudi KAPLAN in
Australia.
She wrote to us that her maternal grand mother's maiden name was PERSOFF (or
PERSOV) who came to Australia >from Russia, is related to us.
Trudi used to live in Perth, then wrote that she will be moving to Sydney,
but neglected to send her new address, thus our contact on the brink of
search and discovery was lost. The letters we wrote with request to have
them forwarded to her were returned un delivered.
If any of you knows her - I will be most grateful if you would please ask
her to write to us!

With thanks,

Also there is a new project being started, called The Maple Leaf Legacy

Where they are planning to have a on-line data base containing photographs
of every Canadian soldier grave-world wide. For more information check out
their web site at

Zalman <zalman@...>

It looks to me that when they were adopted, they didn't remember the last
name, but knew the name of the place, Plunge, and that's how they were given
the name.
Is it possible that they were born in Plunge, and were brought to US as
babies ?
I think it is the most probable explanation.
