On my homepage I published an article (in German) about "Mosellaendische
Ortsnamen als juedische Familiennamen". You can find it under the following
address:

http://www.angelfire.com/art/gregorbrand/Namen.html

It deals with Jewish names >from the 17th and 18th century who were derived >from
the names of villages and towns in the German Mosel region (between Coblence and
Trier). Some of these surnames are still existing today.

WITTLICH; TRITEM; KLESSERT; DETZEM; SOBERNHEIM; KELSEN; MEHRING; MEERFELD;
KILBARG; PINNERICH

There were of cause different spellings of these names.

With best wishes to all

Romanian phone directory #general

Stephanie Weiner <laguna@...>

Up until this past week, I've had no problem connecting to the Romanian
telephone directory via http://www.teldir.com However, something has
happened and I cannot get to the white pages, and after connecting to
the yellow pages I get bumped off and receive an error message >from my
ISP, Netscape. I've sent an e-mail to Infobel, the company that
maintains TelDir online and am waiting for a reply.

1901 UK Census - downloading records by Archival Ref. No. #general

Naidia Woolf <rnwoolf@...>

I have the Archival Reference Numbers for my paternal great grandparents,
Solomon and Sarah ISAACS (#s 20742540 & 20742541, respectively). How do I
download copies of their census records, knowing the reference number --
where do I go (what mode/page/link) do I go to download them, etc.?

PRO's Test Site (under the heading "Census Charges" - Page 2 of 2) states:
"if you know the exact reference of the census image you wish to view, you
can access it directly. Some <page types> are FREE to view." Unfortunately
there doesn't seem to be a field for inserting the requisite number while
you are doing a online search.

Oddly enough, when I did an advanced search under the name of ISAACS,
BIRMINGHAM, RUSSIA, I got an Annie ISAACS(same name as my paternal
grandmother but a different individual), but not my paternal grandparents

-- Solomon and Sarah. When I asked (out of curiousity) for Other Members of
Household, up popped a template (for downloading the PRO Census applet and
although I could see the original document on the screen I couldn't print
it; everything locked up and I had to break out. I hope I don't have to pay
an additional (2nd) fee for the same record.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

SHORN (family of Morris & Yetta -- nee Sherman) of London's East End,
"Russian" Poland, town unknown

VM1803--Need help with translation of German or Polish script #general

Mike Kalt <mkalt@...>

I have received a copy of my grandfather's (Moses Mordche SPERBER) birth
record, which I have posted to ViewMate as VM1803.

The record lists his parents (Chaja Ruchel WEINBACH and Mechel SPERBER,
from Sambor), but the names Elie and Taube WEINBACH also appear on the
record. My assumption is that they are Chaja Ruchel's parents, but I can't
make out the writing which indicates exactly who they are.

If anyone can take a look at the record and let me know who Elie and Taube
are, I would appreciate it.

The record can be viewed at
http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/source/vm1803.html, or by going to
the main viewmate page at http://www.jewishgen.org/viewmate/toview.html and
selecting to view vm1803.

Thanks in advance for any help.

INTRO - researching GOLDSCHMIDT, FURST, and WETZSTEIN - Hessen #germany

Judith Goldsmith <judithgoldsmith@...>

Hello GerSig,
I joined gersig several months ago and have learned a lot >from this
mailing list, and also discovered a very large new portion of my ancestry
and new relatives through JewishGen's JGFF Family Finder (thanks!).

I recently launched a website which I encourage you to visit to check for
connections and see the whole list of surnames which we are researching.

The website is still under development as new members of my family are
added.

http://www.well.com/user/mareev/genealogy/

I have been doing intensive genealogy research for only six months,
but my father and great-uncle did a lot before me;

Volker Hess of Staufenberg has also contributed greatly to our data,
for which we are very grateful!.

I consider myself to be a beginner in doing Genealogy research.
My native language is English; I also know French and Spanish
and a little Hebrew. I consider myself expert in using a computer.
My experience in using the Internet is extensive.
I have identified the history of my family back to great great great great
grandparents in the mid 1700s in some cases.

The family names and towns that I am researching are:

WETZSTEIN & GRUNBAUM/GRUENBAUM/GRUNEBAUM & HAMMERSCHLAG -
Treis an de Lumde (now part of Staufenberg), Hessen
GOLDSCHMIDT/GOLDSMITH & KATZENSTEIN - Erdmannrode (now part of Eiterfeld),
Hessen
FURST/FUERST & STERN - Rothenkirchen (near Hunfeld), Hessen
LOBENSTEIN/LOEBENSTEIN/LOEWENSTEIN & BLUMENTHAL - Solz (near Bebra), Hessen

Please contact me if you think there may be a connection!

NIEDELMAN Tombstones Mt. Zion Cemetery, Queens, NY #general

Michelle Leo <shell-leo@...>

My great-grandfather was Pincus NEEDLEMAN >from Narovlya, Belarus. My dad
and brother did some
cemetery visits this summer, and in the Mt. Zion Cemetery, Mespeth, Queens,
NY, they found some NIEDELMAN graves close to my great-grandparents. I'm
not sure if they fit into our family, but here is the information:

Ida NIEDELMAN, d. 12/31/1942, age 51 years
Gussie NEEDELMAN, d. 1/2/1954, age 95 years
Louis NIEDELMAN, d. 2/20/1910, age 53 years
Max NIEDELMAN, d. 12/1/1918, age 38 years.

I have tombstone photos of the above mentioned people if you are interested

My great grandfather's parents were Herschel NEEDLEMAN and Lena ROSENBERG.
Their children were Abraham Baer, Hinda Boscha, Simon, Pincus, Chaia Esther,
Sarah, Ethel and David. There are many variations on spelling of the last
name: Nodelman, Nadelman, Needelman, Niedelman. If you think there is any
connection, Please reply privately to shell-leo@....
