Handsome Eastern European Immigrant to London - a GOLDBERG from Lodz? #general

Dear All,

Does anyone recognise the handsome Eastern European immigrant to London's
East End depicted in file VM 1840? I've been told it may be a very early
picture of Israel Goldberg, who was born in Lodz in 1884 & married Chana Ita
Tempelhoff there & moved to London c.1905. He died in London in 1973. His
brother, Hyman, & his family moved to the Brighton Beach area of NYC in
1922.

From 1930 Census: Where in Lithuania? #general

I hope that someone can help me figure out the place (Zahina?) stated - not
clearly - on a page of the 1930 census. Please look at:

This family, distantly related to me, consisted of parents born at this
place in Russia and their three children born in Pennsylvania. My family
came >from the Raseiniai area of Lithuania, the closest to that spelling and
geographical place is Zuikine as shown in the JG Shtetl Seeker.

How would the person taking the census hear the birthplace spoken by these
immigrants with Yiddish accents? Would it be a good guess that Zuikine is
where they meant? Other vital records just have Russia filled in and the
parents did not become citizens.

Bendzin Question #general

I have recently had some letters translated >from family members who did
not survive the Holocaust. One is >from a Jakob SALOMON , who was married
to my great grandfather's sister, Anna. They had been separated- she was
in Teplitz-Schoenau, where they once lived together, and he was in
Bendzin.

My question is- does Jakob's presence in Bendzin imply anything about
where he was >from or the skills he had, or even his social position? I
know very little about him. I am trying to figure out if there was a
reason he ended up in that particular place- as far as I can tell, he
was the only one in the family to end up in Bendsburg. Why was Anna left
behind?

Incorrect information on tombstones #general

Incorrect information on Tombstones. Family giving information of the
deceased often get it wrong. For years, I was confused when I found a
BREST Grave in Johannesburg, S.Africa and it said *Cohain* on the stone. I
know that none of the BRESTS are Cohainim and this threw a spanner in the
works for my research. for 5 years I was puzzled and after much research I
managed to find the wife and I called her, and she told me that she didn't
know for sure if he was a was not a Cohain!!. She gave me the name of the
Shul where they got married and I called the Shul who confirmed that he was
certainly not a Cohain but a Yisroel, which is what our family are. So it
really does depend on who gave in the information but one would think a wife
would know if her husband was or was not a Cohain!

Holland. Are there any genners out there who live in Holland. If so,

I received two letters >from the German Archives in Leipzig. Can someone
give me a reasonable idea of what they are requesting? I believe they are
asking for money, but I don't know for what? Also, I think there are
specific forms they want me to use?

Searching: Morris LIEBERMAN from Swisloch #general

I'm still searching for my Uncle Morris LIEBERMAN, born in 1891 in
Swislowitz, Russia, and who came to the states between 1911 and 1917. He
came after my Uncle Max in 1911 and he served in WWI. The only info I have
about Uncle Morris is he was >from Swislowitz, Russia (Uncle Max spelled it
Zvistrich), which is now Swisloch in Belarus. He made his way to the states
through Japan. I assume that he landed in Seattle, WA. My info is so poor it
would be besheret if anyone can help me. I'm looking for the lists for
immigrant ships >from Japan to U.S. and am posting this message with the hope
someone can direct me on how to find this information. I have no idea how
many ships came >from Japan with Russian passengers during those years, but
it must have been many.

I know Uncle Morris lived in New York - first in Brooklyn and then in
Manhattan. In searching NARA in NY, I found a list of 4 Morris LIEBERMANs in
NY showing a Declaration of Intent, but I can't order each one. Is there
anyone who could look up this information at NARA in NY?

My grandparents were Shimshon and Alte Neome Ain LIEBERMAN.

Uncle Morris kept the surname LIEBERMAN, while his brothers, my Dad, Sam
(Samuel Isaiah) and Uncle Max changed theirs to LEAF.

My grandfather's sister was in Shanghai in 1941 and eventually ended up
in Israel. Her name was Esther PIASETSKY, I believe her husband's name
was Moshe. I know of three children, Ezra, Helen and Jacob. Ezra was
named after her father Ezra CHRZAN.
They came >from Makow, north of Warsaw.
I would like to find out more about them, such as when did they come to
Shanghai, after the end of World War I, or later?
Ezra died in Hadera in 1992. Jacob went back to Russia after 1945 and
then to Israel after 1990.
Are there records of the Shanghai community extant anywhere?
