Re: belarus digest: November 03, 2002 #belarus

Bill Schechter <schech@...>

I am still trying to understand why the death lists of towns for which
no Yizkhor book are available can not find a place in the Holocaust
section (It could simply be a page with a compilation of death list
links by town) or somewhere in the Yizkhor book area. The important
thing is that someone looking for a murdered relative can type a name
into a search engine or go to a page with list links and have some hope
of finding their relative's name. Right now, my list of those killed in
Kholmech (Belarus) is buried in my web site and in the "Shtetl's of
Belarus" web site, and inaccessible to a person who knows the name of
relative but not necessarily the place they came from. Yizkhor books are
richer resources, but we should ensure, to the maximum extent possible,
that all those lost can be found.

Re: Bronx, N.Y. death notice? #general

"What newspaper would be appropriate to check out a death that
ocurred in the Bronx, NY in 1989?"

To my knowledge, The Bronx has never had a borough-wide general
newspaper that carries death notices. The best sources are the major New
York City newspapers, specifically the New York Times, the Daily News, and
the New York Post.

Other suggestions are writing to the New York City Department of
Health, Office of Vital Records, 125 Worth Street, New York, N.Y., 10013,
paying $15 for a copy of the death certificate, which they provide to
certain relatives. The Department of Health can also be contacted via
http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doh/html/vr/vrdappl.html .

Death certificates prior to 1949 are part of the public record and
may be obtained through the New York City Municipal Archives at 31
Chambers Street, New York, N.Y., 10007, telephone 212-788-8580, or
http://www.ci.nyc.ny.us/html/doris/html/1vital.html . Their fee is also
$15, and includes a search of two calendar years. If you're not sure of
the year and they have to search through all 8 years, it'll cost $60.

Good luck.

PART B

I received the data below in response to requests for input to my
Jud.../Yud... database. I have been unable to identify a source for the individual burial or for the list of death dates. I am posting the data in the hope that it will be of some value to other researchers. If you are able to identify any of these people, I would appreciate your sending me additional information about them so I can link them to families in my database.

Dear Group,

I was wondering if someone could help me.

I started my geneology research back in March this year and rapidly found my DAVIDOVITCH family on the ALD database. Straight away I wrote to the
Lithuanian Archives about my family giving them details and film numbers >from the ALD database and payment.

I have since learnt to be precise (last night in a conversation with my
aunt) that my own grandfather was not born in Liverpool as previously
thought, but in Russia along with his brothers and sisters. Although i did not request this information initially back in March, what shall i do? - should i write a new letter to them requesting my grandfathers information additional to the search, or will they find it anyway seeing as i am requesting my grandfathers - g grandfather information? will they send me all the details of this DAVIDOVITCH family up to the present day. -Can someone who has experince of this please advise me?
