Searching GOLDBERG in Praetoria (or elsewhere) & STAROLETNI #southafrica

Saul Marks <saulmarks@...>

Dear South Africa SIG,

Hi, I'm new to the group & have joined it to find these two families. One
will be far easier to find than the other.

GOLDBERG
--------
Ronnie Goldberg was born in 1933 in London & married Eva Bart. They had two
sons, Keith G Goldberg & Sean Goldberg. Ronnie & Eva later divorced & he
died of a stomach ulcer in 1980. Eva took the boys & moved to South Africa,
we think to Praetoria. Does anyone know them? Does anyone have any ideas on
how to find them?

STAROLETNI
----------
This search is much older. Chaim Lejb Staroletni was born in Radzilow,
Poland in 1861/2. He married Rochla Leja Rzeczko (b.1866/7) & they had at
least 2 children: Feimal Staroletni (b.1886/7, Poland) & Jankiel Staroletni
(b. 17 May 1893, Wysokie Mazowieckie, Poland). Feimal came >from "Mazoweck"
through Ellis Island on 5 Feb 1904, heading to meet his father, who lived at
26577 Madison St, New York. It is believed the family went on to South
Africa, though I've no idea where. I appreciate this is a stab in the dark,
but anything's worth a shot.

Does any of this ring any bells? Many thank to you all, & Shabbat Shalom,

Saul Marks

Leon Moss <leon.moss@...>

I am another 'name change'.
I was born Mofsowitz. My father changed the family name in 1937 for the
reason 'that we were living in Pretoria and it was highly anti-semitic'. The
relevant excerpt >from the Government Gazette is pasted on my birth
certificate.

Dear Listers,

It will come as no surprise to many
that a great number of SA Jewish =

people have emigrated to Australia.

I find many of my newly-found rellies
are here in Sydney, others in Perth
& elsewhere in Australia.

If people think it's useful, we could try
to get a list of those here. I can help
trace people through the phone books
if you email me names.

There was at one time, a website
devoted to transplanted Jewish South
Africans. It is not now in use.

And I hope to attend the Washington conference.

Name changes #southafrica

Colin Plen

I have not come across many name changes but lots and lots of name =
alterations.I know of two brothers whose surnames are respectively =
orleow and orelowitz. The name Gilchrist has already been documented.
The names Alswang - Olswang - Olschwang - are all different familties =
but I think must have a common ancestor.

Louis Zetler <zetler@...>

I have never studied the laws to the change of names in South Africa, but in
about the 1890's it appears to have been quite an easy exercise. Tradition
has it that the brother of my mother's maternal grandfather bought a
business known as Berkowitz Bicycles or something similar and instead of
changing the name of the business, he changed his surname to Berkowitz. He
told his brother that he had changed his surname and so my ggf also arrived
as Berkowitz. Now I am still trying to establish what the original surname
was!

Catskills information #yiddish

For any of you researching performers who also played in the Catskills,
you may want to check out a Catskills research institute run by Phil
Brown, of Brown University (and, not by coincidence, including
information about Brown's Hotel!). I am not on the web so haven't had a
chance to check. It should be findable by going to

http://www.brown.edu/Research/Catskills_Institute/

and searching for Catskills.
Good Shabbos in advance.

Shtetl based burial societies. #general

Jerome Seligsohn <jselig1315@...>

As we have noted in past messages we have inferred
that the interred are not necessarily descended from
the shtetl sponsored site. I have gone out of my way
recently when researching landsmanshaften to bore
myself examining constitutions of the landsmanshaften.
They might be explicit about what constitutes an
eligible Jew or forbidding making payments outside the
United States but they do not mention [so far] that
the member descend >from the shtetl which has given its
name to the organization. Then ,of course, the spouse
would not be excluded if they were married to the
original member. Therefore we might safely assume that
the origin of the interred might not necessarily match
the shtetl title of the society.
