The following sad note was sent to me by Dr. Lowi, who has asked me to
post it here. Nat was a very devoted Romanian researcher, and in
particular of "his" town, Podu Iloaiei. Many in ROM-SIG had the
pleasure of knowing him personally. He will be missed.

Lucille (nee Rader) ABRAMOWITZ gave me permission to tell you of the
death of her husband,Nat P.Abramowitz ,on August 24,2002.
Cause of death was a heart attack. Nat was a strong contributor
to Romanian Jewish genealogy, and especially to the history
of Jewish life in the town of Podu Iloaiei.

He translated a book of 168 pages >from Romanian to English,
describing the history,local economy,cultural activities etc.
including several censuses of the Jews living in the town.
Rom-Sig News vol.5,number 2 reported on this project.
Nat was an engineer by profession. He lived in Westmont,
N.J. and leaves, besides his wife, Lucille,2 sons Arthur and
Robert and their families,a brother Lewis Allen,
and many friends.

My 1962 Columbia-Lippincott Gazetter's entry for Shpikov says that is is a
village in the central Vinnitsa oblast, 30 miles south of Vinnitsa. In
1926 it had a population of 3,422. It was known for sugar refining.

Miriam Weiner's "Jewish Roots to Moldova and Ukraine" indicates that there
are some army recruiting lists dating 1942 >from this town. They are
located in the town of Tulchin.

However, more may exist elsewhere and have yet to be discovered.


Perhaps Ms. Saltzman may find out more about the town by using Jewishgen's
"search this website" box, and by rummaging in its Discussion Group and
Ukraine SIG archives. I know that at least one other person in the
Ukraine group is also interested in this town, which she may have
misspelled as "Spikov."

A friend of mine has a manifest listing her mother as having been born in
Osnitza, Wolyn. The year of birth would have been 1896.
A search through Mapquest, accessed through Shetl Seeker gives me two
spelling in the Ukraine, neither of which seem to be in Wolyn.
I'm looking for suggestions for the spelling of this town. Any help is
appreciated.

A big thank you to Laurence for this information and a question to all you
genners out there.

I have been on the site today and found the pages for 2 sets of my
great-grandparents and their children. A third has proved illusive, no
appropriate finds on the surnames, a check on a forename, age and location
of my grandmother produced no obvious matches.

I do know that one member was married >from Cressy Place, where my maternal
grandmother was born. Any ideas how I can identify >from this address? I
cannot find any reference to an address, only districts, etc.

Incidentally, the family name I am searching for is CHAIKIN.

I have written today to the operator(s) of the Jewish Encyclopedia.
In a short time I received a reply >from "Josh" who said that some
bugs still had to be worked out.

I was prompted to write because I too had a little trouble but I
am sure that when the technical problems are solved, searches will
be much easier.

Still, because different people wrote the articles, the spellings
of names of towns and persons throughout the encyclopedia are not
uniform.

For instance, when I typed in "Berdichev" turned up nothing. But
typing in "Berditchev" and "Berditchew" turned up several "hits".
(Eventually, I'll add to the information given under the main
Berditchev heading by "starting a discussion" as we are invited to
do for each topic.)

So, when I decided to do a search for the town "Kremenchug," I knew
from my experience with Berdichev to try first "Krementchug," and
thus I got quite a few "hits." ("Kremenchug" turned up nothing.)

When I first tried "BELKOWSKY" I got only one answer, which
concerned the Kharkov conference which my grandfather's cousin,
Gregor Zvi BELKOWSKY, had attended, under the heading "Zionism."
Most Jewish encyclopedias have biographical information about Gregor
Zvi under the spelling BELKOWSKY. I don't know how his name is
spelled in Hebrew, but I do have translations of the biographical
information given in a couple of Hebrew references. So, curious why
more about him did not appear at the site, today I tried typing in
"Zionism," and on the second "page" found the encyclopedia's quite
good biography of "Gregoire Zvi BELKOVSKY. I was pleased to see a
list of articles he'd written, some of which I did not know about
before, and I expect to create a discussion group about him. My
first attempt to fill out the Encyclopedia's message form to set up
a BELKOVSKY-BELKOWSKY-BIELKOWSKY Discussion Group and to update the
biographical information the Encyclopedia provides for Gregor Zvi
failed when I pressed the "send" button, but Josh assured me that
this sort of failure will be remedied.

So no one should be disappointed at their first tries at exploring
the Encyclopeida. Instead, everyone should use his or hers
imagination and attempt all the possible variants of names of towns
and people. Also try searching under a subject matter heading.
Something of interest is bound to turn up!

As for the articles, there is for instance, a very good one on
Jewish agricutural colonies in Russia, which I turned up simply by
typing "Agriculture" in the search box.

Two items are posted on Viewmate regarding Abraham Jacobs. On his Death
Certificate, help is needed reading the given name and middle initial of
Abraham's father and the maiden name of his mother.

The second item is Abraham's obituary which shows Mollie as his widow. Her
maiden name or any other information about her is unknown to us.

It is possible that Abraham was related to Chaim/Hyman Jacobs who may have
been married to Sarah. If they are related, they could be brothers or father
and son.

Thank you for your suggestions of the spellings of these names. Hopefully,
there will also be a connection on these documents to a genner's family
records?
