Re: Some Difficulties of Proving Paternity #unitedkingdom

I write regarding the comment "There is a story that Charlie indicated once that Sydney's father was Jewish and because they were brothers he considered himself Jewish by proxy."

In order to be Jewish a person's mother has to be Jewish, so even if Sydney's father was Jewish, that does not make Sydney or Charlie Jewish.

Who were the Arians? #galicia

Shapiro <herman_s@...>

Does anyone know anything about the Arians, or Polish Brethren? Could the
Arians (Polish Brethren) have built the synagogue in Podhajce? When did it
stop being a church and start being a synagogue? Why?
How did the Jews get it?
Could the synagogue have ever been a mosque?

DC 2003 Conference Update - Deadline for online registration July 8 #galicia

Shelley K. Pollero

I share with you the following message >from Elias Savada, DC 2003 Conference
Co-Chair:

As promised, the latest version ("D") of the Day Planner (a.k.a. the
schedule) for the 23rd IAJGS International Conference on Jewish Genealogy
was posted to our website last Sunday. You can view it online and/or
download a version readable in Word. For the first time this includes the
room names where the presentations/events will be held. The Conference
website is at http://www.jewishgen.org/dc2003

The Film Fest portion of the program (which, unfortunately, is limited to a
smaller venue on the mezzanine level) is proud to announce that on Tuesday,
July 22nd, we will be offering a day filled with the films of Yale Strom,
noted director, author, and musician. Among the films to be presented are
L'Chayim, Comrade Stalin; The Last Klezmer; Carpati: 50 Miles, 50 Years; and
his newest, Klezmer on Fish Street. Yale will be available to introduce his
films and sign copies of his new volume, The Book of Klezmer." Additional
screenings may be scheduled.

Dr. Martin Stiglio, director of the Istituto Italiano di Cultura, will be
introducing The Righteous Enemy, the first filmed account of the Italian
resistance to the 'Final Solution.'

And local filmmaker Esther McBride and staff >from the Jewish Historical
Society of Greater Washington will present a series of short films about
Jewish life in Washington.

For those of you who have read the rave reviews of the new Anne Frank
exhibit at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum
(http://ushmm.org/museum/exhibit/index.utp?content=exhibit/right.htm%23anne)
, you will have exclusive access to this exhibit during the private
tour/reception on Monday night at the conference. Tickets are only $10 and
can be ordered during registration. Otherwise, you will need timed tickets
in conjunction with the two free museum ducats (given to every registrant),
for use outside of the private reception.

The Library of Congress staff are finalizing their schedule of introductions
(exclusive to conference participants) to various Reading Rooms. While the
time/dates have not been finalized, details will appear in the next version
of the day planner. The following Reading Rooms will offer these on-site
sessions: Newspapers and Current Periodicals, European, Local History and
Genealogy, Maps, and Hebraic Section.

Now, some ***very important news*** for those of you who are planning on
attending but have procrastinated to this point (shame on you). Online
registration will close at 9AM on July 8, as our registration company needs
to prepare all the tickets, badges, etc. to be included in each registration
packet. Registration will resume at the hotel sometime during the weekend
before the official Conference launch Sunday morning. However, the CD-ROM
needs to be sent for replication 3 weeks before the conference begins, so we
will be cutting off the Family Finder portion of the registration (at least
as included in the syllabus and CD-ROM) before the end of June. The Family
Finder is a key ingredient of the program and by waiting much longer you
risk being left out.

In just over a month I hope to be seeing many of you here in Washington!

Search for family HUNTER & GREEN in the UK & RSA #general

Daniel Gee <DanielGee@...>

Dear Genners,

I am looking for Monty & Henry HUNTER in the UK - aged around 85 and their
sisters Cissy and Marie HUNTER who went to South Africa.

Another sister was Rosie HUNTER who married a Mr GREEN in the UK. The
GREENs had twins: Pamela and Peter (now aged about 65).

I believe the twins live somewhere in England, but know nothing more. All
these children were descendants of Ike HUNTER and Fanny LEVY.
Please respond if you can help or email me.

Thank You
Daniel Gleek in London

Anyone ever hear of Passau, New York--Need help in reading manifest #general

Marc Hodies <marc@...>

Hi all,

Finally hit some paydirt and found my gf's ship's manifest. I want to
identify the person he met at his destination address but I cannot make out
the town in New York. It looks like 10 Hudson St, Passau, New York.

I did some screen captures and made a website at:

http://www.smorgon.netfirms.com

I would appreciate it if anybody can help me out with reading this address
so I might be able to look this person up at the 1910 census.

Thanks,

Marc Hodies

Follow up on Saul Wernow / Zalmen Wornowitzky, more handwriting help #general

jeremy wernow <jeremy_wernow@...>

I have received some very interesting emails >from everyone regarding my
previous post about finding my uncle Saul Wernow. I stated that I have
Saul's petition for naturalization but I can not find his Ellis Island
files. I did, however, find an entry for a Zalmen Wornowitzky >from
Zornicz (Russia, Ukraine) who arrived in 1905 at age 32. Although Saul
Wernow is probably an anglicized version of this name, I am not convinced
this is my uncle (although it is likely a cousin).

The age listed is 20 years to high, Saul was 10 or 11 when he arrived. I
also do not know much about Zornicz yet. Now, this is where I turn to the
news group for help. Once again, there is notation in the ellisisland.org
scanned ledger that I can not read. At the end of the line, in the notes,
I can make out "Cousin Max", "141-143" and "New York". Cousin Max has a
last name that I can not read, and I do not know what appears
between "141-143" and "New York". Once again, any help would be
appreciated. Please respond offline. Thanks again

Looking for
WERNOW, WARNOW, WORNOW, WORNOWITZKY, VORNOVITSKY (from
Russia, Ukraine, Kiev, Monastyrishche, Podolia, Uman)

The eldest child Milly was married to Nathan SACK and died aged just 30.
Some of these children may be buried in Edmonton Federation Cemetery.

Dear Genners -

Yes, it's been said before many times, but - please, please, would posters
please remember that not all readers are >from the USA and many are not
native English speakers. A message saying, for example, "My grandfather
came here at the age of 10 >from Hotzplotz" tells us nothing. If you do not
give minimum information, how can you expect useful and meaningful
responses?

Also, when quoting addresses - Wazoo City, VA may be understandable to US
readers. It may even be understandable to Australians. But it may mean
nothing to a non-native English speaker >from Russia or Brazil.

When composing a message, please bear in mind that we don't all know what
