B'nai Jacob Cemetery New Haven, CT #general

Arthur N. Feinberg <feinber2@...>

Dear Genners:

I would be eternally grateful if any of our readers lived near the old
B'nai Jacob Cemetery in New Haven CT on Wayley Rd. and would be willing to
find a stone there. It's a long story why I am so interested, and I will be
glad to bore you with it if you are so inclined. Please respond privately.
I will be glad to pay any freight and would even make a donation to
JewishGen in your honor.

Thanks.

It is only slightly off-topic to note that, had more of the Levites
chosen to adopt the SEGAL surname, John Wayne would have appeared in
movie westerns wearing segals rather than levis.

But no, because it was Levi Strauss's first name, not
his surname. Actually, his original first name was Loeb, which he
changed to Levi after immigrating to the US, according to

Re: Town Name/Sneezes #general

Ken and Deborah Baseman <dbaseman@...>

One possiblity of s town name that sounded like a lot of sneezes is
Sochaczew, Poland. The yiddish-speaking elders in my family pronounced it
as SOCH-err-chofff. Good luck on your research and G-d bless.

Re: Theodor HERZL's Hebrew name #general

Jane Rosen Berenbeim

Michael Bernet asked how Herzl acquired the name Binyamin Ze'ev:

According to Ernst Pawel's biography of Herzl (The Labyrinth of Exile,
1989), he was given the Hebrew name Zeev at birth, along with the
Hungarian name Tivadar and the German name, Wolf Theodor.
