Hello !
I would consider, as a french born, german and hebrew speaking (and
some english writing ) the possibility of a hebrew "Sofer" origin. Who
knows how civils employees of 1830 spelled a hebrew name ? Sofer is the
public writer, or/and the Thora scroll, mezuza an phylacters writer.
The jewish german name Schreiber has the same meaning.

But if this name has a hebrew origine, and beside shofar and what you
already know, we may think that "shofer" in hebrew sound "the one who
pour". And this may relay to a jewish Levi tribe origin, the Levi beeing
the one who pour water on the Cohen (priest) hands (and feets in biblical
times ) to purify him. On some tombs graves >from Levi's you found graved
a jug pouring water.

This just to add to your dilema....

I would certainly be interested in becoming part of a Sopotskin BOF
group. It meant so much to me that a group of Dartmouth University students
visited Soptskin to help restore the Jewish Cemetery under the leadership of
Mr.Lozman.
At the present time,I know of no vital records that exist. We must not
give up on preserving the memory of Sopotskin.

I am not sure how to assess the attitude toward a name as of 500 or 1000
years ago. My gut gives me no clue.

Shalom everyone,
I for one am enjoying this thread, especially because my brother, of
blessed memory, was named "Joseph Ira".

Does anyone remember a Yosef Yira Hecht on the radio? My personal theory
is that the name "Ira" is really pronounced "Yira", which would be the
Hebrew word for "fear", as in "fear of heaven".

=As far as I can recall, "Yira" is not a name.
Ira, I think, is of Aramaic origin, and maybe means the Hebrew Ayir =
donkey-foal.

Best regards,

Dear Genners,

Upon the advice of Alice Josephs I emailed Mr.L.S.Montague the Jewish
Refugee Committee in London. They found the records of the 2 brothers:Rolf
Koenigsbuch born in Hamburg on May 26,1929 and Kurt Max Koenigsbuch born
on Dec 23,1931 in Hamburg. They are most probably still around. The JRC is
not allowed to disclose further details but it is sufficient for me to go
on .They last lived in 1948 at Elpis Lodge(a hostel for refugee boys) at
117 Gough Rd in Birmingham.

Now the ball is in our court. Can you help???

It is the eve of Tisha B'Av and it is so symbolic to see survival through
the destruction.

Czarrsow/Czausow #general

Michael Chauss

I recently was able to locate the shipping manifest for the Carmania,
arriving in New York August 23, 1906.  On that ship were my great
grandmother, grandfather, and great aunt, listed as Hene Czausow
(or Czarrsow--difficult to read), Abram, and Rochel.

They were listed as having come >from Poltow, in Russia.  Their destination
was 21 Whipple Street, Brooklyn.

My questions:
1. I am not sure which "Poltow" (probably Poltava)they would have come
from.  Any ideas how to pursue that?

2. My great grandfather had a brother who came over at roughly the same
time he did, before 1906.  That brother's name is missing.  However, he
had a son named Moe, who had a son named Randy.  Any information on that
side of my family would be appreciated.

Thanks
