One-Step Search Engine Adds AnyBirthday Feature #general

Diane Jacobs <kingart@...>

Steve Morse has improved his birthday search form which is a front end
to anybirthday.com. His form now lets you specify the birthdate (or a
range of birthdates) as a parameter to the search. That is, you can now
search for a person by specifying the birthday as well as the name and
zipcode. This feature is not possible if you use the anybirthday
website directly.

To get to Steve's birthday front end, go to his homepage at
http://stevemorse.org and click on the link for birthdays in the
Births/Deaths section.

If you have any questions or comments, please direct them to Steve
Morse.

Help finding Leib and Yankel WORNOWITSKI / WORNOWITZKY in Philadelphia #general

jeremy wernow <jeremy_wernow@...>

Hi genners

I wanted to solicit some advice on what to do next in my search. I
have found the following entries on the Ellis Island DB.

Leib WORNOWITSKI Monastriche, Russia 1911
Leib WORNOWITSKI 1911

I have done a search of everything I know of online to find more
about this person with no luck. I have tried the census data, NY
immigration petitions for the same period as well as anything on the
online genealogy sites. So my question is what would more
experienced genealogist’s recommend that I search next? The details
are listed below.

WORNOWITSKI, Leib
Russia, Hebrew
Monastriche, Russia
May 16, 1911
21y
M
S
Ship : Uranium
Rotterdam, South Holland, The Netherlands

The comments listed that he was going to the following address

Jankel WORONOWITSKI
222 Lombard ST
Philadelphia, PA

There was also a second listing on EIDB for the same person.

Leib WORNOWITSKI 1911

The ledger listed him as a detained immigrant and gave the same
address except with the name BRODSKY.

Here is what I know. I know that I have some family >from Monastriche
(Monastyrishche is the correct spelling), so I am certain they are
relatives, likely an uncle or distant cousin. I know that our family
name has gone through a few changes since immigration; it was
originally VORONOVITSKY and then listed as WORONOWITZKY (or some
variation of it) and later shortened to WERNOW/WORNOW. I assume that
Leib means Lou and Yankel means Jacob, coincidentally my gg
grandfather was Jacob and had a son named Lou, however I have
positively established that they were in Brooklyn during this time
frame and that these people are definitely are not them, they just
have the same names. I have no idea who the Brodsky family is, this
is the first reference that I have found to them in my research.
They do not appear in the census data at this address and I can not
find them in any other search.

Besides wanting to know about other resources that I can check in
general, I am planning my first trip the national archives (about
time considering I only live a few miles away) and would like to know
what others recommend that I check while I am there. Thanks in
advance.

Birth records from Podolia (Nemirow and Bratslav) #general

IsraelP <zach4v6@...>

Can someone give me direction on searching for and ordering birth records
for two towns in Podolia?

One is >from Bratslav - I have the supposed date and the given name of the
child (Ruben), but not the surname. The year is 1864.

The other town (in this case anything for the family) is Nemirow. I am
looking for anyone with the surname PIKHOLZ and the one person we know of
was born about 1870.

I am in Israel and do not have access to some of the resources that many
of the rest of you do. Thank you.

If you are interested in Birds of a Feather Groups:

1. Please indicate if you are willing to be the volunteer coordinator
2. Please list each SURNAME in caps with the name of the locality, Uyzed
(if known) and Gubernia in small letters beside it. That means that each
surname may be entered several times if there are more than one localities.
3. Please give your name and your e-mail address below it.
4. Address this through belarus@... so that other SIG
members can see which localities are being started.

This makes it easy for the transcriber. I can just cut and paste the
information into a spreadsheet.

Thanks,
Nancy

Thanks!

SLUZEWSKY (Sluzewski) is associated with the Polish town names and/or
the Polish nobility surname. Check such places as Sluzewiec (known as
the Warsaw hippodrome), Sluzewo or Sluzew in Poland.

Meaning of the name derivates >from 'sluga', Slavic for the 'servant',
most probably king's (royal) servant.
