Translation request - Hebrew footnotes #general

Cory Streisinger <corys@...>

A fellow researcher kindly provided me with a family tree relating to my
ORNSTEIN ancestors >from Lviv. Since I do not read Hebrew, I would very
much appreciate help in translating two of the footnotes >from the tree -
footnotes 7 and 12. I believe that footnote 12 relates to the marriage of
my g-g-g-grandparents Yerachmiel ORNSTEIN and Mirl RAPPOPORT.

I've posted the text on ViewMate. The direct link is

Other that that kind of 'boil', a carbuncle is any thing similar to a
boil and unlikely fatal. he best guess that I have seen would be a
misspelled tubercle. Tuberculosis was common and often fatal.
I can confirm an ancestor that died of an "infected carbuncle" in 1930,
Chicago. That is what is stated on his death certificate.

Re: NEW BOOK "When Angels Fooled the World" #hungary

Dear Leslie,
just one question:
was or is Pastor Stehlo nominated as a "Righteous Gentile"?
That is the minimum he deserved!
Find out!

The book you mention, "When Angels Fooled the World"
came to my attention as well, when I was sent a bookreview
to publish on my Hungarian / English WEB-site at
www . arpad . com <<< Interestingly, through this book
I found some details about the Lutheran Pastor Gabor Stehlo
who helped save about 2,000 Jewish children, among them one
of my cousins, at that time 2 years old. Since that time I
have found out, Stehlo's cousin is still alive in Hungary,
and in close touch with many of those survivors. Author of
the book, Charles Fenyvesi himself was one of the survivors
through the help of Stehlo. For Hungarian genealogical work
it is a helpful aid to read this book.

Re: Hajos - Gutman - Guttmann - Loewi #hungary

Patricia J. Weisshaus <patjw28@...>

In my husband's family, there is an aunt named Maria who was married to a
Laszlo Hajos, born March 1890 who died in Austrailia 12 July 1966. Any
connection? According to the story we have, his name was originally
Schipper or Schiffer. When the name change occurred, we have no idea. I
have failed to find their marriage records in the Budapest records through
the LDS, although I have looked at the marrige records for the 7th District
up through 1921.

Some of the American encyclopedias still list him under both the Guttmann
(Gutman?) as well as under the Hajos name. I don't know, when the name
change
occured, but it may have been in abt 1919?

Rosali Loewi (abt 1955 / 1910 ) and Jakab Guttmann (abt 1855 / 1891) had
four children (to my knowledge):

Alfred (Hajos) born in Budapest Hungary, Feb 1, 1878 / d. Nov 12, 1955
Julia
Jozsef
Nicholas Miklos

Anyone with some help in going either direction?
Thanks...

Re: Cubicle-Cause of Death? #general

Peter Zavon <PZavon@...>

That one doesn't seem likely as carbuncles are not (and were not) life
threatening. "Painful" and "localized" but not deadly.

<< I am told a relative died of cubicle. What is that? >>
More likely the cause of death was a carbuncle. Here's the definition:
"A painful localized bacterial infection of the skin and subcutaneous
tissue."

First Name Kadish? #general

S. Harris <jewishgen@...>

An ancestor's vital record (1891) lists her father's name as Kadish
ISAACS. I can find no such name in any search.

I have also checked Kaddish (which seems more likely to me).

Any English equivalents of Kadish?

Perhaps it refers to cubebism which is poisoning by cubeb (characterized by
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever). Cubeb used to be given to stimulate
healing of mucous membranes, and as a diuretic and urinary antiseptic, or
so says Dorland's Medical Directory.
