Shalom,
I am organizing a family reunion for the BELFER family that came from
Bar, Ukraine Podolia Gobernia. I would like information on the family
and the city. We have visited 2 BELFER families that came >from Bar and
immigrated to Israel within the last 10 years. Not quite a match but as
they still have close relatives there so we are in touch.

The name 'MONTFOLISKY' is probably an anglicised version of
the Russian given when my granfather arrived in UK. His first
name was 'Eleazer' and he was a shoe repairer/maker living -
I think - in Vitebsk. He came to UK circa 1902 leaving his
pregnant wife in Russia. She followed after the birth of the
baby, Hetty. My granmother's first name was 'Fega' called
'Figgie' by the family.

Does this ring a bell with anyone?

Reverend Solomon LEVY #unitedkingdom

Mike & Michele Rosenthal <morose@...>

I am searching for information relating to the offspring of the Rev Solomon
Levy (my great great grandfather) of the Borough Synagogue and a practicing
mohel in London for over 20 years.
Children: Abraham b 1849
Sophia
Joshua 1850 - 1876
Rachel b 1854
Israel Solomon b 1857
Hannah 1859 - 1879
Saul
Joseph b 1865
Julia b 1867
Dinah b 1869
Isaac 1870 - 1888
Aaron b 1873
Marcus b 1875

Although his children are documented in various census returns, I have found
it extremely difficult to "bring them forward". Any help, in either
direction, would be appreciated.

Re: Carbuncle can be cause of death #general

Peter Zavon <PZavon@...>

Interesting. It does appear that the term "carbuncle" is related in some
fashion to the disease "anthrax." However, the term "carbuncle" is old and
much more commonly used to describe a non-fatal but painful, boil-like
condition occurring most often on the nape of the neck, the upper back and
the buttocks. It is now known to be a staphylococcus infection.

I suspect most people in the US, and many elsewhere, will be aware of
Anthrax as a result of the terrorist mailings of October 2001.

Dear Peter,
There is an on-line 1913 Webster's Dictionary which contains a detailed
description of a carbuncle and which states that it is frequently fatal.
It is also called anthrax. Researching anthrax in the same dictionary,
we find that this type of anthrax usually affects sheep, cattle, horses,
goats and swine and that it may infect humans, causing meningitis and
pneumonia with a high rate of death. It can be transmitted to humans via
infected raw meat, blood, or other fluids. Synonyms for anthrax are
listed as Bacillus anthracis and woolsorter's disease. How blessed we
are that we live in a time when many medical conditions that were fatal
to our ancestors are no longer common, and that there are now medical
interventions for other diseases that previously had been fatal.

Although an on-line dictionary might list anthax as one meaning of
'carbuncle', I doubt very much that this is the case here. Infected raw
meat is not kosher, so I would say it unlikely that the ancestor died of
anthrax. Generally, to be kosher meat must be cooked to death, killing any
potential pathogen.

Other that that kind of 'boil', a carbuncle is any thing similar to a boil
and unlikely fatal.

The best guess that I have seen would be a misspelled tubercle.
Tuberculosis was common and often fatal.
