Help reading ship Manifest item - 2nd attempt #general

Or Shani

Hello,
In a ship Manifest the "Residence Place" item of a
supposedly relative of mine is very unclear. Ellis
Island site read it as "Lolipic". I couldn't find
any place in Galicia (where he came from) with a
similar sound.
Can you kindly look at the jpg file, in JewishGen
View Mate, and suggest any other possibilities for this
hand written name ? I've uploaded a bigger part of
this same Manifest and marked a red circle around the
name in question. The file is in :
http://data.jewishgen.org/viewmate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=2933
I would be much obliged also for suggestions on the
"Relative or Friend... Name and Complete Address".

Please reply directly to me (not to the list)

Thanking you very much

SHECTIN family or bakery from Kelme #general

Tybi <tybi@...>

I am looking for information regarding the Shectin bakery or the SHECTIN
family >from Kelme. I found a reference to the bakery in "The Life of the
Jewish Community of Kelme and its tragic End."

I am curious to see if they tie into my father's family. My father told
me that his grandfather, Chaim Hirsch, was a baker and that his
great-grandfather was a schochet in Kelme. His father, Tuviah, arrived
from Kelme to South Africa in the early 1900's (I'm guessing...) and his
family name was written down as Soggot by the immigration people. As far
as we know, the rest of the family perished in the Holocaust and my
grandfather was the only survivor.

I am very curious to find out more information about the family.

Many thanks,

Tybi Kapiloff

Clandestine Immigration to Israel, May-June 1948 #general

Jerry Schneider <jerry.schneider@...>

Genners ...

I am trying to document one of our family stories regarding a holocaust
survivor's immigration to Israel in the months prior to its Independence
from Britain.
I am looking for the name of one of the "clandestine immigration" ships
that brought people >from Europe to Israel in the months prior to its
Independence.

In particular, I am looking for a ship whose name sounds something like
"Nachshon Kaftelle". It left >from France sometime in May 1948 with 560+
emigres heading for Haifa. The ship was intercepted outside Haifa by
British forces and its passengers were sent to internment camps in Cyprus.

Soon thereafter, the British allowed the children and seniors >from the
ship to go to Israel. I believe this was in mid-May 1948. They then
arrived in Israel sometime abt 7 June 1948.

My great-grand uncle was one of these children.

I am looking for the ship and especially a passenger list. Any other
information about this journey, where I might look for additional
information, or offices or organizations that should be contacted would
also be greatly appreciated.

Please respond privately to

jerry.schneider@verizon.net

Thank you.

Any idea the parents (ages 46 and 42) would be living with the youngest

the adult son as a pool room clerk.
Is it a census return that says the son was "head of household"?
It might be a mistake to attribute too much significance to this.
I don't know what was the official definition of "head of household"
in 1910, and it's possible that the census taker and/or those being
interviewed didn't either, or didn't apply the definition properly. It
could just be that the census taker happened to interview the son, and so
everything was described >from his point of view.

Hanky panky (maybe rape) in Jerusalem? #dna

howard sachs <hfsachs@...>

Mr. Jacob Goldstein's theory is possibly true, but we
are all engaged in rank speculation. As to his
problem with the 1000 year date, I think that is a
journalistic simplification. The original article in
the American Journal of Human Genetics (released on
September 17) deals with "an inferred common ancestor
within the past 2,000 years." Since dating is derived
for mathematics and mutation rates, as I understand
it, the common ancestor could easily have lived
several hundred years before the year 1003. So the
date may coincide with the Golden Age of Jewish
Khazaria. If the ancestry results >from improper
sexual relations in Jerusalem with the wife of a
Levite, I would guess the descendants might account
for a very small proportion of current Askenazi Levite
claimants but 50% is astounding, and suggests
something more notable, resonating for a millenium for
the descendants asserting Levite descent. And the
Jerusalem theory would not explain why Northern Europe
is almost exclusively where the descendants appeared.
I do agree this will take a lot of searching for
explanations.
