Marseille bombing 1940 #general

Fellow JGenners,

I am looking for help >from anyone who might have been in
Marseille in 1940 or knows the history of this period. I have a
childhood recollection of a bombing in Marseille that took place in
November (plus or minus 1 month) 1940. I have seen reference to such
a bombing in a publication. However, I am not sure who bombed the
city or why. I thought that it might have been the British Air Force
bombing French naval ships to prevent them >from being used by the
Germans. This was certainly done in other French ports on the
Mediterranean. However, despite considerable searching I have not
been able to determine who was responsible for the Marseille bombing.
If you have any thoughts on the matter, please respond to me
privately. A citation to a definitive history would be appreciated.

How can I attempt to get a copy of an obituary of an antecedent who
passed away on September 13, 1923 in Mt. Sinai Hospital in New York
City? The purpose is trying to find out who his mother was. The death
certificate shows "unknown", as does the cemetery record in the space

In tracing my NEUBAUER ancestors >from Fuerth and Nuernberg,
I have recently learned that my great-great-grandfather Georg NEUBAUER's
maternal grandfather was Georg BENDA, who founded a bronze factory in
Fuerth in 1824.

Georg BENDA's son-in-law was Max NEUBAUER, the father of Georg NEUBAUER.

from the Fuerth archives, I've received an excerpt >from a book about Fuerth
industries which contains a lengthy section about the "Georg Benda" firm
and the BENDA and NEUBAUER families. Unfortunately, it is in German and I
know only English. Would any kind GerSigger be willing to translate this
excerpt for me? it is about eight pages long (too much to post on
ViewMate). I would be happy to fax or mail it to any volunteers.

I recently discovered a great-grandmother's German passport. Her name was

GORDONOVICH) had a cousin who established a large, successful business in
the early decades of the 20th century: the Kosher Zion Delicatessen. (My
father isn't sure he has the name right). I assume this business was in
New York City, since that's where my great-grandfather lived.

Has anybody ever heard of this company or one with a similar name?

If so, does anyone know about the people who founded this company?

I have been trying for quite a while to trace the ancestors of my g...g
grandmother, CLARA SAMSON, who was living in Oberbronn, Elsass during
the 18th century, but so far no results.
She was married to Henoch Fraenkel SG"L, son of R' Tzvi Hirsch Fraenkel.
Henoch lived in Frankfurt am Main probably until 1742 and then moved to
Oberbronn, Elsass. In a marriage contract >from 1754 of her daughter
(Ritschel) Clara signed in Hebrew "Klerle, Eshet R' Henoch SG"L". In
German she is referred to as "CLARA SAMSON". I looked for the names
Clara and Samson (Shimshon) in Ettlinger's "Ele Toldot" and there was
none that could fit. She was probably not >from Frankfurt a.Main. In the
census >from 1784 she appears in Oberbronn as a widow with a son living
with her, named Seeligman. Other children that Clara (Samson) and Henoch
SG"L (Fraenkel) had: 1. Ritschel, married to Jacob Kahn (Oberbronn,
Elsass); 2. Israel 3. R' Itzchak (Itzik) SG"L, Fraenkel, Hena (Fordon,
d. 1754).
Any information (or suggestion) concerning Clara SAMSON, her ancestors
and the other people mentioned above would be greatly acknowledged.

My paternal gr-grandfather, Bernhard-Abraham NISSEL (1837-1917) who married
Rosalie KLEMANN (1844-1918), lived in Breslau - Silesia. I have no
information about his origin, ancestors or siblings.

My maternal grandparents, Jacob-Aharon DAWIDOW (1859-1922) and Ita-Sara nee
LEVIN (1860-1935), married in Minsk, migrated to Breslau (about 1890) and
spent there the rest of their life. I have no informatin about their
ancestors nor their siblings.

Three of their daughters : Bertha, Stephania-Fani and Rosa DAWIDOW lived in
Breslau, and perished in the holocaust. I don't know when and in which
c.camp. If anyone can halp me with this research, I'll appreciate very
