Stille Chupa ( Silent wedding ) #general

Aubrey Jacobus <zen28027@...>

Can we have some light on the shady subject of the "stille chupa" . I
assume they did as I believe a warning against them was issued in UK.

Questions
a.What evidence or record , they occurred -When and where.
b. Who officiated ?.
c. What was the purpose - other than bigamy / poligamy -
e Any Ketubah ?
e. Did the Beth Din collude - ? A "stille chupa". could only have a
religious validity - which assumes that future religious authorities would
accept it.

Need help in Israel #general

Stephen Warshall <s_warshall@...>

Shalom

I have just learned of a probable relative in Israel and wish to make
contact with him.

I have his name and phone number (as of a few years ago), but have reason
to believe that he may not speak English and I don't speak Hebrew.

It would be a great help if some JewishGenner in Israel could call him up,
explain that I am trying to make contact, and find out how we can best
communicate.

The relative lives in Beersheba. If you can help, please let me know
privately.

Dear Jgsiggers,

I wish ro thank all the many people who kindly replied to my query both
on-line and off-line. I heard the program today and I believe it can be
extremely useful as an extra tool for Jewishgenners in finding information
about specific relatives.

I would suggest that anyone who understands Hebrew and has some access
to Israeli Radio (short-wave or internet) should try to listen this
program.

Name Errors in 1920 Coroner's Report #general

jeremy frankel

Dear Genners,

Having just received a 1920 Coroner's report issued by the St. Louis
Medical examiner, I was quite surprised to find a number of errors
contained within.

The deceased was Hyman MANDEL and his son Sydney, is listed on the front
page as one of the witnesses. However, on page two where the report
begins, it states "...the body of Simon Mandel..."

The Post Mortem Examination listed the decedent as Hyland Mandel, and
the Inquisition listed the decedent as Hyman Mandell and his wife as
Bessie Mandell.

Guess this is further proof that one should believe all that one reads!

Logoshin and Telekhany #belarus

Ari Itzkowitz <arii@...>

I am researching the BOBROW/BOBROWITZ family >from Logoshin. While Logoshin
and Telekhany seem to be two separate towns, I understand there are many
researchers (and even some maps!) who claim that it is the same town but
the name was changed to Telekhany. What is the real situation and if they
are separate towns, why have so many professionals decide they are the
same town? Any ideas?

Thanks,

Re: Other names than those searched #poland

Mark Halpern <willie46@...>

All the AGAD records are expanded indices that include multiple
Surnames. All the Surnames in the index entry are searched when
you perform a Surname search of the JRI-Poland database. There
are no other "hidden" Surnames in an AGAD or any other record
index.

It appears that these names that you think are not part of the
Soundex code are actually included in the Soundex code for the
surname you are searching. There is a JewishGen Infofile that
explains Daitch-Mokotoff Soundex at
http://www.jewishgen.org/InfoFiles/soundex.html.

Hello all,

I've come across several instances where records appear in the
table with family names for which I did not search. These
names
would not be part of the Soundex code for the name I was
searching. These are AGAD records.

Is it possible that the family name I was searching for appears
somewhere on the record but not in what appears on screen?
