BECK and DANHEISER #general

Barbara Mannlein <bsmannlein@...>

Just found the New York City area cemetery where many members of my
husband's family were buried.

The plot was purchased >from the Yorkville Brotherhood Aid Society.

There are 4 graves in this plot belong to people whose names are not known
to us.

Is anyone out there researching Ernest and Selena BECK or Theodore and
Maria DANHEISER?

Aryeh may be right. I was told that Rav Ephraim OSCHRY had a brother
who lived in Chicago and made aliya with whom we identify and this
OSCHRY was hosted in ggparent's house in Kelm while studying in
Yeshiva. That explains the contradiction.

There is a mixup between two cousins.

Rabbi Leonard (I believe) OSCHRY (good friends of our family) came
on aliya >from chicago. He had spent some time in South Africa I
believe. He also wrote &/or translated several seforim into
English.

Recently I saw that a Rabbi OSCHRY passed away in New York and when
I called Rabbi Leonard OSCHRY's daughter about it (her father passed
away several years ago and his wife and children live in Israel) she
said it was her father's cousin.

In regard to the family of Rabbi OSHRY which I know very well, the
following is provided:

Rabbi OSHRY was born in Kupiskis, Lithuania, where his family lived
for many generations, some coming as early as 1850 or before. There
were branches, of course, in other shtetls. The family originated
in Cologne, Germany, >from which they were expelled with about 20
other families. All of these eventually wended their way together
as a group to Lithuania and settled first in Birziai then Kupiskis
as well as Anyksciai.

Information on Rabbi OSHRY was available following his death in the
New York Times obit which I referenced in the JewishGen digest of
the time.

You may also read more about him on our Kupiskis SIG web site:

http://www.shtetlinks.jewishgen.org/kupiskis/kupishok.htm

You may view a photograph of the rabbi and many of his family
members (his brothers and cousins) taken in 1947 during a
fundraising visit to Johannesburg, South Africa, on the Kupiskis SIG
Web Site under the Kupisker Society, Johannesburg section.

The OSHRY family can now be found in many other countries including
the U.S., South Africa, Israel, etc. Their name is spelled
variantly OSHRY, OSHRI, OSSRE, OSRI, etc., and is taken >from the
Hebrew and the first word of a Psalm (discussion of which can be
found in the JewishGen digest).

The rabbi's book initially published in Yiddish has now been
translated into English and is entitled, "The Annihilation of
Lithuanian Jewry". It can be obtained >from most Jewish book sources
and Amazon.com. He also has a well-known book on responsa during
the Holocaust.

Zurow, Galicia #general

Hazanjo <hazanjo@...>

Good Morning All,

So now that I'm getting a better idea of where Zurow was (do I understand
correctly that this once small village in Galicia no longer exists?), I'd be
grateful for any ideas as to where I might find some background info on this
town. There is a placeholder for a Yiskor Book entry which will give me
some information eventually, but other than that I've tried Google and other
searches only to find nothing specific. Does anyone have ideas on this?

Searching: HABER - Zurow, Ukraine (formerly Austria); STARK - Warsaw,
Poland; SADOFSKY/SADOWSKY - Lodz, Poland; KANET/KANNETT - Czyzewo, Poland

MODERATOR NOTE: An accent over the "o" in "Zurow" has been removed. Because of
variations in the handling of accented characters in different computer systems,
we ask that you not use accented or other special characters in messages to

Dear Genners,

In accordance with the current complete reconstruction of the Kisvarda
cemetery and the erection and rewriting of approximately 700 tombstones
there, (this is in addition to the beautiful, concrete fence built 2 years
ago by some descendants) we at the Heritage Foundation for Preservation of
Jewish Cemeteries (a.k.a. HFPJC) would appreciate any information regarding
the existence of any mass graves in the Kisvarda cemetery post WWII. Please
notify us at the following e-mail address:

Re: Stalin's Purge of Doctors #general

On Dec. 24,03 Varda Epstein (yknow@...) asked whether "anyone
knows of a list of the names of doctors that Stalin purged."

Here is a list I've compiled for Ms. Epstein >from the "Dramatis Personae"
entries in Louis Rapoport's "Stalin's War against the Jews: The Doctors'Plot and
the Soviet Solution," The Free Press, 1990.

Dr. Yakov Etinger
Dr. Boris Borisovich Kogan ( but not noted as Jewish)
Dr. M.B. Kogan
Dr. Lev Grigorievich Levin
Dr. Yakov Rapoport
Dr. Miron Vovsi
Dr. Boris Shimelovich
Dr. Vladimir N. Vinogradov (but not noted as Jewish)
Genrikh Yagoda (pharmacist) and head of Secret Police

If I come across any other names of Jewish physicians who were purged by
Stalin, I'll write again.

Your feedback welcome #general

Tony Wilson <whitecottage@...>

Greetings

I would like your opinion of our new product.
Being a family history researcher, I thought of an idea for people to
record their life story in their own words.
I came up with "Reflections of My Life", a book now available from
Booklocker.com for download as an e-book.
My wife and I are seeking publishers to take on the project in 2004 to
have it printed in hard copy form. At this stage we have two copies
printed and bound to show agents or publishers.
I know the frustration searching for information about long lost
relatives and I believe this book can, in time, help with that problem.
To check out the book go to http://www.booklocker.com/books/1439.html
If you would like more information on how to get a copy or receive a
couple of chapters to see what the book looks like, please email me.
We would like you opinion and comments.
Many thanks
