Date
BREEN in Chicago #general

Meghan Wood <junkdepot2k@...>

I have been trying to research my great great grandfather that came from
Kiev. His name was Nathan BREEN and he probably came over before 1900. He
died in 1945 of December in Chicago and I'm in the process of getting an
obit on him, but I'm not expecting much to be metioned in the obit. My dad
said what he was ever told the name was never changed. According to my dad,
he probably did not know his birthdate. If any body can help me research
this it would be great because I don't know where to start on this.

Aubrey Jacobus <zen28027@...>

The most notorious missionary site was Palestine Place Bethnal Green
Tower Hamlets : The JC is replete with letters >from 1847 onwards
about the horrors of the place preying on destitude Jews
However one letter in JC 06/09/1850 mentions a case of a boy David
Delevante ( sic) son of Esther Delevante who "escaped" after 8 years
inside ,
The letter reports that the mother applied to "the Portugese congregation
"
on his behalf was was only offered sending him to Barbary the prospect
of which did not appeal. The 1851 census Palestine Place gives a
long list of inmates. HO 107/1540
I have tried to track some
names forward but without success. but I see there is a Dinah Delevante
born c 1836 London listed.

A worthwhile project ?

Dear Genners,

I'm looking for the late Irene (Irena) Prager nee Deutelbaum, a Slovakian Holocaust survivor who lived in Israel up until the early 60s in Bat Yam, and then immigrated to Autsralia leaving no traces behind. Her whereabouts there were unknown and she's obviosly long dead. I'm looking for any of her descendants, assuming she had ones. Your help would be highly appreciated.

Judith Berlowitz is interested in the family of Jacob Eduard POLAK. He is quite
well documented in various publications. Here is a brief article about him,
which conjures up a charming vision of the famous doctor [perhaps in top hat?]
greeting the Shah stepping off the Orient Express or a similar luxury train:

http://www.jewishencyclopedia.com/view.jsp?artid=400&letter=P

Jacob Eduard was born in Gross Morzin/Gross Morschin/Velka Morina, Berouner
kreis, Bohemia and died in Vienna on 7th October 1891.

Here is his grave in the Zentralfriedhof Gate 1: [he is buried alone].

POLLAK Jakob Eduard Dr. age 73 buried 11.10.1891 Group 19 Row 57 Grave 45

It should be possible to find his birth records in Prague and his probate, an
obituary and Partezettel in Vienna. Again, as he studied in Prague and Vienna,
the University archives should have the names of his parents. There was a paper
given about him in April 2006 at a conference in Vienna:

Reseacher: Marcel Chahrour (Wien):
http://www.univie.ac.at/medizingeschichte/veranstaltungen_inst.htm

I have sent Dr Chahrour a copy of this posting - hopefully we will get the
answer soon about the name of Jacob's parents.

In 1793 there was one POLAK family in Gross Morzin:

Henoch, wife Sara with two sons Juda and Michael and daughter Rosina. Henoch
lived in the Flusshaus [ie he had a concession for potash distilling] and he
was also a dealer in Leinwand [linen fabrics]. Juda or Michael could be the
father of Jacob [no ages are given in the census] or one could perhaps be the
grandfather and the other the great-uncle.

All this needs a bit of perseverance, but the data will be there. One just has
to dig for it.

Dear All,

My grandmother's family (LERMAN) left Warsaw on 27th June 1931 by train,
to Trieste (Italy). There, they boarded the ship "Martha Washington,
probably on 28 or 29th June, to Montevideo (Uruguay) where they arreived on

I am looking for passengers list, so far without success in Google (only
descriptions of the "Martha Washington")

Someone know where could I find registers of this ship? or any related

January 21, 2007 JGSNY meeting - The Bialystoker Stimme and Landsmanshaft Newspapers as Genealogical Research Tools #poland

Gloria Berkenstat Freund

The Jewish Genealogical Society in New York City will present "The
Voice of the People: The Bialystoker Stimme and other Landsmanshaft
Newspapers Genealogical Research Tools" on Sunday, January 21, 2007,
at 2:00 PM. The guest speaker is Rebecca Kobrin, assistant professor of
American Jewish History at Columbia University.

The program will be held at the Center for Jewish History, 15 West 16th
Street, Manhattan (between Fifth and Sixth Avenues). Subway: 4, 5, 6, L, N,
R to Union Square; F, V, L to 14th Street & Sixth Avenue and 1, 2, 3 to 14th
Street and 7th Avenue . There is a $5 admission charge for non-JGS members.

A neglected trove of research materials awaits those who sift through
landsmanshaftn (Jewish hometown associations) publications. With
landsmanshaftn once claiming over a million members, their publications
comprised a cornerstone of the Yiddish literary marketplace. Their
contributors were part of the larger Yiddish literary movement sweeping
through the Lower East Side which fueled the growth of Yiddish print
culture. In contrast to the ideologically charged and meticulously
edited pages of such newspapers as the Jewish Daily Forward, the
landsmanshaft press welcomed contributions >from many ingenue writers,
who spoke abouttheir families, Eastern Europe and America.

Using examples >from several of these publications, Professor Kobrin will
illustrate how the vast corpus of landsmanshaft literature is a rich but
rarely utilized genre in modern genealogical studies. The articles,
advertisements and lists of relatives available in these journals,
magazines, and newspapers left a deep imprint and enable contemporary
readers to answer myriad questions concerning the inner world of their
Yiddish-speaking immigrant ancestors.

Rebecca Kobrin specializes in Jewish immigration history, Jewish urban
history and Diaspora studies. Her forthcoming book is titled "Between
Exile and Empire: Jewish Bialystok and Its Diaspora."

The Jewish Genealogical Society hosts monthly programs held at the
Center for Jewish History. Members of the public are invited to attend
these events and to join the organization, which was founded in 1977.
