Eldridge Street Synagogue Congregants List #general

Steven Lasky <steve@...>

Greetings,

I just discovered that the Eldridge Street Synagogue, one of the oldest and
most beautiful of synagogues ever built on the Lower East Side of Manhattan,
has put online a long list of former congregants, dating >from the 1850s to
the 1950s. This list was compiled >from historical documents found in the
building, including the Congregation's minute books and ledgers dating as
far back as 1892, old seat tickets and cemetery records, as well as
documents held in New York City archives. They might even have other
information on some of the congregants such as occupation, address or their
position as an officer the synagogue itself.

It might be interesting to look up the name of a family member who once
lived on the Lower East Side to see if they were once associated with the
synagogue. The URL for the congregant list is
http://www.eldridgestreet.org/get_involved_fc_loc_ac.htm .

Searching for Anna GOLLAY and her family from Chicago (originally Pinsk) #belarus

Darren Dalcher <D.Dalcher@...>

Can any one help? I have been trying to trace my grandfather's first
cousins for the last two years with no luck.

What we know is as follows:

The family is originally >from Pinsk, Poland - now Belarus. My
grandfather Raphael BANKOWSKI (son of Chaim BANKOWKSI and Freida Yente
SCHLACKMAN) emigrated to Tel-Aviv in 1924. He stayed in touch with his
cousins in Chicago and met them in Israel a number of times. After his
death all contact was lost including their addresses.

There should be two sisters (as far as I know):

Anna GOLLAY was born around 1900. She never married and did not have
children. She lived in Chicago itself very near the Science Museum.

During a visit many years ago she introduced us to her sister, Hannah,
who was married and had children. I have found an obituary suggesting
that her surname was Paker as she was married to Max Paker. I believe
she also lived in the Greater Chicago area. I have been unable to find
any names or links to her children.

As the GOLLAY sisters are linked to two branches of the BANKOWSKI family
(with both determined that they are first cousins), I assume that their
mother must have been a BANKOWSKI >from Pinsk who married there.

(For the sake of completeness, I should mention that Freida Yenta
SCHLACKMAN my GGrandmother - daughter of Alexander SCHLACKMAN and
Rachel/Gitel WASSERMAN had uncles and aunts who made it to Chicago, but
I suspect that the connection is on the BANKOWSKI side.)

Help, ideas, links or knowledge of the people concerned would be greatly
appreciated. Please respond in private to my personal email address
(d.dalcher@mdx.ac.uk).

Many thanks.

Darren

The last part is the real problem; if you give the information to an archive,

Archives are for the storage of information - some of which might be
sensitive - and as we know even individual Census data has a date (100 years
in the UK) before which it cannot be released.

I note that even the US National Archives at US National Archives
http://www.archives.gov/global-pages/privacy.html has a statement "Donor
Imposed Restrictions upon Materials in our Holdings" which says that
dissemination of some documents found in their holdings may be restricted by
donor agreement.

It is quite usual, I believe, for famous writers etc to lodge their papers
with universities and I understand that they place restrictions on access to
these papers.

Archiving material at a reputable for posterity is not the same as publication.
I am not an archivist although I did work on Freedom of Information in the UK.

I'd like to call to the attention of Litvak SIGgers Raymond Balta's

Ray is not Jewish, so these videos are not a Jewish tour of various
shtetls.

However, you can see at the above site what you might see just walking
around in Silute, Palanga, Klaipeda, Kaunas, and Vilnius.

Note: I found I had to click twice on the icon in the middle of the
black screen in order to start the slide show in each case. Turn on your
speakers, too, since there's musical accompaniment.

Pinkeljude #austria-czech

Henry Wellisch <henry.kelwel@...>

Having been born in Vienna and since my mother tongue is German I can
certainly confirm that in the German language used in Austria the word
PINKEL or BINKEL simply means bag. I also have gone through dozens of
censuses >from the late 18th and early 19th century of the Jewish
population of western Hungary, western Slovakia and the Burgenland.
The word Pinkeljude refers unquestionably to those Jewish traders,
who went >from village to village during the week, with a bag of
merchandise on their back to sell their wares. In fact I have a copy
of one of my distant relatives Max Kestlers (1812-1889) who started
out as a "Pinkeljude" and whose diary was published in the periodical
Judaica in 1937. He describes in great detail how on Sunday he used to
pick up merchandise >from the Jewish wholesalers in Pressburg, and then
continued on foot for the rest of the week selling his wares in nearby
small towns and villages. On Friday afternoon he used to return to
Ragendorf (now Rajka) so that by evening would be home.

Prague cane merchants #austria-czech

Julia Clarke <juliaclarke@...>

Celia Male is puzzled that there should be so many (10) cane merchants
recorded in Prague in the 1790s but without comparable figures for other
trades it is hard to know how disproportionate that is. Was it an
exclusively Jewish business in Prague?

I did a quick search in a general London trade directory for 1808 (the
earliest I could find online) expecting to find many more given the size
of London but came up with two "whalebone & cane merchants" and five
"whip, stick & cane shops/manufacturers". Of course each of these
businesses would have employed several people. One must also add to that
the many who were not affluent enough to get into a trade directory,
those whose business was importing bamboo, malacca and rattan and also
the very poor like chairmenders who would go round the streets offering
to recane chair seats and backs. I wonder how accurate people had to be
for the Prague census - could a "Rohrhandler" also really be a
chairmender on the principle that rubbish collectors prefer to call
themselves sanitary operatives?

With best wishes

First, thanks to all who replied and did a lookup in israel.

I have more info, if it might help to try a lookup again.

1. His surname was almost surely ALBERT, first name, Levi.
2. Born 1932 in Haifa, orphaned at age 11
3. Mother's name Chaya BARTAK, dont know father's name
4. Last wrote >from Hadera, Israel and not Haifa, in 1959.

Oh, and since I do not know for sure he stayed in Israel, if anyone else out

please let me know.

Please reply privately.
