The site below claims to list 60 million brief obituaries,
searchable by name, location etc. It brings up dates,
last addresses. It also lists funeral parlors and cemeteries by
cities, and occasionally has an album of recollections
attached to a name. It's based mostly on Social Security records

Re: Surname puzzlement #general

Sandra Bergman asks:

"Whilst searching through the Ellis Island site online...the name Moses
Mokoboitch came up. Could this name be for real? Could it be that an
official wrote down whatn he thought he heard or is it simply illegible
handwriting? Would be appreciative of someone telling me if Mokoboitch is a
surname."

The name was transcribed as M_a_koboitch. However, in looking
at the actual manifest, I believe the surname was written
"YAKOBVITCH".

Does anyone know whether the Ellis Island Foundation is
willing to correct these kinds of errors in transcription
that are so bad they make locating one's relation impossible?

Eve,

I assume that your query is related to town Chodecz located
roughly a half way between Lodz and Wloclawek.
Answer should read: Russian Poland. Poland did not exist as
the independent country in 1864, and this particular part of
country has been in Russian hands. There also was in existence
Prussian and Austrian Poland.

descendants of Philip REIFER, pharmacist #general

Renee Steinig <rsteinig@...>

I am searching for the descendants of Philip REIFER, born 1889
in Rzeszow, then western Galicia, to Joachim (Chaim) REIFER and
Chana SALIK. He grew up in Jaroslaw and studied pharmacy in Vienna.
The Ellis Island database shows two trips to the U.S. -
in 1907 (Philipp REIFER) and in 1913 (Filippo REIFER). According to
family sources, he settled in the U.S., possibly in Brooklyn,
and was a pharmacist. He is said to have married and had children.

I have been unable to find Philip in the 1920 and 1930 federal
censuses or in the 1933-34 Brooklyn City Directory. Before I launch
an all-out search of naturalizations, vital records, etc.,
I thought I'd check with you: does the name ring a bell?

Also, I'm wondering if anyone has ever run across
professional directories of pharmacists that cover any years
between 1920 and 1950. The earliest one that I could
identify was published in the 70s.

Thanks.

Article in Time Magazine on Yizkor Book Project #galicia

Marjorie Rosenfeld <marjorierosenfeld@...>

The current, May 31, 2004, issue of Time Magazine has an article on
JewishGen's Yizkor Book Project.

Called "Books of Life, the article is available online at:
http://www.time.com/time/generations/article/0,9171,1101040531-641131-1,0=
0.html

The article is a really nice plug for JewishGen and Yizkor Book Project
Manager Joyce Field. There's also a good photo of Joyce!

(Disclaimer: I do not own any part of the Time-Warner empire and do not
stand to benefit financially if anyone looks at this article or purchases
the magazine in which it appears.)

Koenigsbuch Brothers-Kindertransport-Help Needed in NY and England #general

Abuwasta Abuwasta

Dear Genners,
I posted in the past an enquiry about 2 of my late
mother's remote relatives the brothers Rolf and Kurt
Max Koenigsbuch born in 1929 and 1931 respectively in
Hamburg. They were on the Kindertransport and survived
the war in Birmingham. They never participated in the
Kindertransport reunions and we lost their traces
though they are most probably still active somewhere.
Last week I discovered their 95 years old first cousin
Erna Teichteil-Koenigsbuch in Johannesburg through a
wonderful Genners' participation.
On Monday I got an email >from a remote relative of
them who lives in Buenos Aires which reported to me
that between 1969-1970 she lived in New York and that
her father put an ad in a local newspaper looking for
Koenigsbuchs. She wrote to me the following:"and a big
surprise came ,a young man living a short time in N.Y.
he was a journalist and I remember he said he got a
brother in England. This must be Kurt or Rolf.We never
more got in touch with them".
I checked in Birmingham and Manchester and through
most of the normal places and I believe that only one
of our genner brethern ,through personal knowledge,
may put me on track again. I am quite convinced that
they changed their name. There are 2 Kurt Koenigs
registered in NY State white pages. One has a recording
the second is a fax. There are no Koenigsbuchs in all
of the USA(only my cousins Kingsbook in California).

As moderator of this list I have noticed some problems in the
sending out of messages -- I don't get any of the messages although
all the settings are correct.

In order to check the contents etc of the digest I have set my
husband up to receive the digest - and that I do receive.

Now I am wondering if anyone else set to receive "MAIL"
(i.e. every single message as they are sent out) has the same
problem.

I would therefore kindly ask you to let me know if you receive
this e-mail. Just hit the reply button and I will know.
