I have heard >from a number of people that the article I cited in the
National Geographic's Adventure magazine is available in excerpted form
online. I haven't read it online but I suspect that the focus on line is on
the caves themselves, not on the genealogically relevant material, which is
incidental to most of the magazine's readers. National Geographic will
fulfill individual orders for anyone with an interest in either the town or
the families mentioned.

Re: Fw: What's a Biff? #unitedkingdom

chaikin <chaikin@...>

Sue Levy of Perth, Australia asked:

On reading the Laws of the Exeter Hebrew Congregation (1823) I was
intrigued
with Law 22 that states -
'The hazan must not be in shul in time of service without his Mantell Biff
and Hat, subject to a fine of 2/6 for each offence.'
Can anyone clarify what is meant by a Biff?

=It seems like someone, a member of the congregation, came >from a foreign
country, and had problems with writing the English >from the spoken language
(just like me, many times:-)).
He may have meant: Service mantle (Talit); brief (instructions for the
service?); service hat (a big cap, almost like the one that the pope likes
to wear:-)).

Best regards,
Udi Cain (Ehud Menachem Zvi Chaikin).
Please bear in mind, that English has
never been my "mother tongue",
I think Hebrew and write English
words associatively, so try to forgive
my mistakes, and understand my
writing in an associative way.
