LIEBERGAL #general

Israel P <isai8v10@...>

The US Holocaust Museum has a reference to two brothers Josef and Marian
PIKOLC (b. 1930 and 1929) living as refugees in Bytom Poland in 1946. Their
parents are listed as Mendel and Anna or Podwoloczysk. The Jewish community
of Bytom (yes, there is one today) has no record of them and we have no idea how
long they were there or what became of them.

Mendel is an uncommon PIKHOLZ name, but I have a suspicion that this Mendel is
the son of Moses LIEBERAL and Sure PIKHOLZ of Skalat. (I know that at least one
of the six children of this couple was in fact born in Podwoloczysk.)

That leads to the possibiity that the brothers later went by Liebergal or some
derivative thereof. I have begun checking the usual sources - JGFF, US phone
books, Israeli sources and of course Bytom, but thusfar have not found anything.

If anyone has anything on someone who might be one of these two brothers, I'd
be pleased to hear.

I'm searching for Holocaust survivor Arnold JUSSEM and/or his descendants.
He was last seen in Vienna before he left for Palestine. Perhaps that unusual
surname will show up on some Hebrew language directories.

When skin tones were used to differentiate among people it would be:

D [or T] unkel[mann], for dark, and Bleich for pale. Possibly Lichtmann might also
have meant light-toned.

Re: Terms of Endearment and the Yenta #general

While we are on this thread - what would one say about being called Yenta The
word Yenta is also somewhat perjorative, at least in USAyiddish ("she's such a
yenta"), where it's a sort of gossiping busybody. Actually, it's a Romance first
name, Gentile, that made its way about a thousand years ago, up the Rhine and
through Germany to the East.

Gentile does not mean non-Jew in this context. It is still in normal use today in
French to mean kind, nice, pleasant--and became transmuted in English usage to
gentle.

New Bedford, MA Search / ABRAMS & DRATCH #belarus

ms nodrog

Dear Genners,
In an old address book, used by my husband's grandmother when she came
to America, there is an address for Abrams & Dratch, Water Street, New
Bedford, MA.

I have already searched the NB City Directories >from 1909 until 1931
and the US Census for 1920 and 1930.  There was indeed a Benjamin &
Fannie DRATCH, and a few years later Samuel & Lena ABRAMS. They were
all part of the Abrams & Dratch Dry Goods / Department Store.  I have
also checked the JGFF and FTJP with no connections. If anyone has any
information about these families, please contact me.

There is also an address for a Max PINCUS in Brooklyn who was either a
brother of Abrams or Dratch, or their wives, since there is a side note
in Yiddish saying, "Etta's children."  Any information about this
person would also be helpful.

I assume these families came >from Oshmiany and the Vilna area of what
was then Poland and then Lithuania. However, they may have come from
other areas.

Please contact me at msnodrog@yahoo.com.

Thanks in advance.

ViewMate # 4168 and # 4179 Polish #general

Anita Frankel <frankel2@...>

Hello all-

I have posted two documents to ViewMate and would be very
grateful if someone could translate them for me.

# 4168 I believe this is the birth certificate of Abram FRENKENSTAJN of Dabie,
Russian Poland, 1855. It is in Polish and can be found at:
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=4168

# 4179 I believe this is the birth certificate of Hana SKOKOWSKA of Dabie, Russian
Poland, 1866. It is in Polish and can be found at:
http://data.jewishgen.org/ViewMate/ALL/viewmateview.asp?key=4179

The people on this list have been truely remarkable in contributing their time and
expertise to help others. The people at ViewMate, especially Sam Eneman, are
outstanding.

Thanks to all
