JGSGW - Washington DC Area June Meeting #general

Marlene Bishow <mlbishow@...>

The Jewish Genalogy Society of Greater Washington (DC) will host its annual
end-of-the year potluck lunch on June 27, 2004 at the JCC of Northern Virginia,
8900 Little River Turnpike, Fairfax, VA. The program will include the installation
of new officers for 2004-2005, and a session of "Climbing Brick Walls". The event
will take place >from 1:30 to 4:00 PM.

Sometimes it can seem that no matter how much time and effort we put into a
research problem, we can't find the answer! Members who have a 'brick wall' can
describe it to the group, and receive feed-back and suggestions. Many times
others have wrestled with the same problem, and have found a solution. If you have
a brick wall to share please bring the details with you to the meeting.

To share in the vegetarian/dairy pot-luck lunch, if your last name begins with
A-I, please bring an entree. If your last name begins with J-R, please bring a
dessert (sweet or non-sweet)And if your last name begins with S-Z, please bring a
side dish or salad.

Bring enough food for three to four people, plus serving forks and spoons.
Consider bringing rolls, cookies, olives, cheese, crackers, potato chips, etc.

JGSGW will provide all beverages and paper products.

Driving Directions: Take I-495 (Capital Beltway) in Virginia to the Little River
Turnpike, Exit 52a, Route 236. Head west, toward Fairfax 1 * miles to the traffic
light at Guinea Road. Turn right and proceed to the JCC parking lot ahead.

Dear Genners,
Further to my enquiries I received today info >from Hamburg that Kurt Max
KOENIGSBUCH(b.1931 in Hamburg) changed his name to Max Roy HARPER and lived in
1962 in Toronto (Ont).I found a Max HARPER in Sault Ste Marie in Ontario and
called him. It is not the person I am looking for.
His brother Rolf Simon KOENIGSBUCH lived in 1962 in XXXX Park Avenue,Weehawken,
N.J. There is no listing for any KOENIGSBUCH nor KONIGSBUCH in all of the USA.He
probably changed his name.
Does it ring a bell? We nevertheless make small progress.

Anyone have any idea where Olexinca might be? I checked the ShtetlSeeker trying
to figure out if there was something akin to that name near Szumsk. Not sure if
what I saw would have been "the one."
Please advise privately if you have any information or informed opinion.

E-mail Problems #general

Dear Genners,

My IPS has been upgrading its servers (to fight spam) for a week or so. The work
has caused some problems in receiving emails. I understand that many people who
have sent messages to me have had the messages rejected.
As I do not know when these problems will be finally solved -- although my IPS
hopes it will be soon --Genners may contact me at:

Jewish Family Reunion made Possible Through Home Movies #general

ELIAS SAVADA

Steve Davidson, a friend and fellow film archivist (and Director of the Florida
Moving Image Archive in Miami), has a very interesting story about a Jewish family
in Southern Florida reunited by a stranger's discovery of a trove of family
items, including home movies, in their garage.

It's these types of unexpected situations, through the kindness of strangers, that
makes researching, and reuniting, your family so worthwhile.

Jacob,

Your request regarding private response is appreciated but I believe that any
discussions concerning general interest as e.g. names of the localities should be
made available to all Genners and kept consequently kept in the discussion group
archives for the further references.

As to your request it appears that Dobe Lupolanski was resident of "Olgonov" which
most probably corresponds to Olganow near Busko in the Kielce region of Poland.
Olganow was obscure place with only 3 Jewish residents

There are other candidates for"Olgonov" that are located in Ukraine and Belarus
(Olgopol or Olgomel) but you did not volunteer to provide details as to the region
where >from Dobe has originated.

Analyzing Dobe's birthplace reveals that she was born in "Holowansk" which is
modern Holovanivsk (ex Russian Golovanevsk) situated south of town Uman in
southern Ukraine.

Thus, establishing Dobe birthplace in Holovanivsk we can now return to "Olgonov"
and through the more or less an intelligent deductions figure out that "Olgonov"
should read Olgopol, located some 40 miles WSW >from Holovanivsk.

I could be of course incorrect in my speculalations. Lupolanski surname is spelled
Polish way not "Lupolansky" which may indicate that Dobe was after all resident of
Russian Poland. But on the other hand, Ellis Island scribe could be of the Polish
origin and perhaps he wrote down names >from the Russian passport his own way. Who
knows.
