Dear Genners,

Has anyone heard of the above company? They sent me an offer to order a CD
ROM of my family along with a 2004 international Family yearbook of my family
celebrating the last 2000 years of my family history.

I would appreciate knowing if anyone has any thoughts or information.

Please respond privately unless you believe the information may be of some

Genners:
To avoid getting 19,600 hits you can narrow it down by first putting in:
"genealogy castle garden"
Using the word "genealogy" eliminates all the unneeded hits. It works quite well
with surnames, countries, etc. I used
Genealogy Goldberg and only Goldberg related to genealogy showed up. Also when
I put in genealogy russia only Russian genealogy appeared including a reference
to JewishGen.
That may or may not be the way to go, however. If one wants to learn about
processing procedures at Castle Garden, for example, it isn't clear that
refining the search by adding "genealogy" won't eliminate too much.

19,600 hits is, in fact, quite a moderate amount. A good strategy is to make
the first search general ("castle garden" only), and review by eyeball the
hits that the search turns up. Very often, the desired information can be
found in the first few dozen hits. Narrowing down is best left for cases in
which most of the hits are irrelevant, so that they swamp out the relevant
ones. For example, if most of the "castle garden" results turn out to relate
to a vacation resort in the Bahamas, it might be well to add the term
"immigration" -- which would seem in any case to be more to the point than
"genealogy".

Re: Processing at Castle Garden #general

John Warshawsky <john@...>

Alan M. Kraut 1994 book entitled "Silent Travelers:
Germs, Genes, and the 'Immigrant Menace'" contains a
brief discussion on page 36. Kraut explains that
Castle Garden was an old fort renovated and reopened
as a state immigration reception center on August 1,
1855. He further explains that ships anchored at a
quarantine station six miles below New York City where
an emigration boarding officer boarded to count
passengers, ascertain the number of deaths during the
voyage, the degree and kinds of illnesses suffered
during the voyage, and the overall cleanliness of the
vessel. After sending a report to the general agent
and superintendent at Castle Garden, the boarding
officer remained on the ship as it steamed up to
anchor near the Castle Garden depot. Passengers then
were transferred to the jurisdiction of the Landing
Department, and following a customs inspection of
luggage, immigrants and their belongings were taken by
tugs and barges to the Castle Garden depot. After
arrival at the depot, the immigrants underwent medical
examinations to determine if there were any sick
people overlooked by the boarding officer's
examination and to select others subject to "'special
bonds under the law" (such as "blind persons,
cripples, lunatics, or any others who are likely to
become a future charge.'" After examination, the
immigrants were directed to a rotunda in the center of
the depot for registration of their names,
nationalities, former residences, and intended
destinations.

Does anyone know about or have a reference to the
actual processing procedure at Castle Garden.

here did the boats land? How were immigrants
conveyed to Castle Garden? Was there any type of
security? Are there interior photos photographs of
Castle Garden during the period it was the immigration
center? Were there medical exams?

There are dozens of books with such information
about Ellis Island, but I don't recall seeing similar
references for Castle Garden.

Thanks.

In addition to what David has offered, please remember that Castle Garden has
had several names thru the years. It is also called Castle Clinton, after
Mayor DeWitt Clinton. In 1812 it was West Battery - originally built as a
fort to protect the harbor of New York.

Hello

I think I already asked this before...but I deleted the emails...
What might the name SHARPE have been before the ancestor emigrated to
the US?

His name was SIMON SHARPE and he was >from Vilnius, his father was a
merchantnamed Benjamin Sharpe. Simon moved to Nashua, NH and was a
founding member of Congregation Beth Abraham. His wife was ZELIA
BOROFOSKY. I am having a terrible time trying to discover
what the name was changed from. I've emailed the Mass. Jewish Council,

want to be a pest, but my research on my husband's line is in neutral at

Brick wall for Benjamin Max SHAPIRO #lithuania

m leonards <m_leonards@...>

Perhaps someone can offer some suggestions for researching my
great-grandfather, who is something of a cipher. He died in 1930, after
spending more than two years in a NYC nursing home after a stroke. None of
his grandchildren remembered him.

In American documents, he was Max SHAPIRO. On his death certificate, he was
Benjamin M. SHAPIRO, born in Russia, and parents’ names unknown. His
tombstone says he was Binyamin son of Chaim. On the death certificate for
one of his daughters, her daughter said his name was Mordechai. So, perhaps
the Mordche (or something similar) became Max.

There is the usual inconsistency in year of birth, which ranges >from
1863-1870.

The only clue I have as to his place of origin is the 1920 census, where he
and his wife are shown as >from “Kovna, Russia”. Max SHAPIRO never became an
American citizen. His wife had siblings in the United States who left more
of a paper trail, so I’ve been able to determine that her KHELEM/CHELEM
family moved >from Pandelys (Zarasai uyezd) to Kupiskis (Ukmerge uyezd) in
1875. But no one remembers any relations on the SHAPIRO side of the family.

My great-grandparents spent the first half of the 1890s in England, probably
London. I don’t know whether they married in Lithuania or in England. The
couple does not appear on the 1891 English census available on Ancestry.com.

At least two children were born in England, but I have not yet looked for
their birth records (inconsistent years of birth on U.S. records).

According to census records, Max and Leah (Lena) SHAPIRO came to the United
States in 1895/1896. I cannot find them on the Ellis Island database, the
St. Albans lists or the passenger manifests for Philadelphia and Baltimore.
The Boston manifests are not indexed for this period, so I haven’t checked
them, yet. However, their place of residence would probably be London.

Upon arriving in the United States, they had a child in Newark, New Jersey
in 1898; in Chelsea, Massachusetts in 1900; and in Elizabeth, New Jersey in
1902. They moved around in New Jersey a great deal, and I haven’t found
them in the 1910 or 1915 censuses. By 1917 they were in Harlem, New York
City.

My SHAPIRO great-grandparents are both buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery in
Maspeth, but separately. Benjamin Max SHAPIRO is buried with the
"Independent Russian Hussars of America". I have been unable to find out
anything about this organization, but I suspect the family could only afford
one plot when he died, and bought whatever was available.

Does anyone have any suggestions for finding more information about Benjamin
Max SHAPIRO?
